Burning Mystery Chapter 1 The wedding day

It was the wedding day for Sedona influencer Maria Baker, but the groom wasn't there. Groom Zane Knight has been dormant since a car accident six months ago. Doctors said he wouldn't live until the end of the year.

Zane's grieving mother decided to get her son married before her son's untimely death. The Order was one of the richest families in Sedona, but no sane influencer would want to marry a man who knocks on death's door.

Maria was elegantly dressed in a white wedding dress and was sitting on the dresser in a slender figure. She gave off a delicate impression like a budding red rose with elegant makeup that emphasized the elegance of her fair complexion. Still, she was uneasy about her almond-shaped eyes.

With her 10 minutes remaining until the ceremony, Ms. Maria frantically moved her fingers across the screen of her cell phone, waiting impatiently for her texts and her messages. She had a boyfriend before she was forced to marry Zayn, who just so happened to be Zayn's nephew, James Knight, by a terrible coincidence.

However, they never made their relationship public. Maria had texted James the night before, hoping they would run away from Sedona together and elope. She stayed up all night waiting and got no reply. She couldn't wait any longer. Maria got up from her seat, clutched her cell phone, and considered an excuse to leave her room. She hurried down the corridor, past one of the rooms, and froze.

Through the slightly open door of the room, Maria heard her sister Katherine giggle with joy and she laughed.

"Maybe my stupid sister is still waiting for you to go to her, James! Maybe you should grease it up a little more. If she changes her mind and declines the wedding what are we going to do if we decide to do it?"

"Do you think she has a choice now?" James said, holding Katherine in his arms and pressing his thin lips. her neck. "The guards will drag her head off the altar, even if she tries to pull back from now on!"

Maria felt a loud noise rings out in her head. She took a step back and nearly lost her balance. She clenched her fists around her dress and held back tears in her eyes. Her father was hospitalized because his company went bankrupt.

Her stepmother Selina Baker rebelled against Maria and forced her to marry into the Knight family for her benefit. She had given the impression that this marriage was for the benefit of the Baker family, but Maria knew that was how Selina wanted to get rid of her!

It was the fact that the boyfriend who said he loved her turned around and betrayed her! No wonder James encouraged her to go ahead with her wedding. He said he would marry her when Zayn died, but that was all a big lie! All her hopes and dreams were shattered and she couldn't breathe. Maria clenched her fists and her eyes froze as the voices in her room grew louder.

For years she has endured the harassment of her stepmother and stepsister because of her father. She endured all kinds of injustices for the benefit of her family. She was too stupid and naive. Now she won't allow herself to be considered a fool anymore! She will take back all that belongs to her! The wedding started soon after that.

Wearing her wedding dress and holding a bouquet of flowers, Maria walked down the aisle with soft, romantic music playing in the background. She made her vows and put on her wedding ring. The crowd gave her a confused look, but she ignored them.

From now on she was Mrs. Knight, and she was untouchable. But her new husband, who held Sedona in his hands, was not to live long. That night, Maria was sent to Zayn's mansion.

Located in the heart of the city's affluent neighborhood, the mansion costed over $150 million. Before Maria could get the mansion's arrangement right, Mrs. Fischer dragged her into her master bedroom. Her gaze was immediately drawn to the man on the large bed.

She walked over slowly and stared into his face. Zane's chiseled features stood out against his chiseled face, exuding an aura of dignity and nobility. He had been indoors all this time, so his skin was unusually pale, but his handsome features caught her eyes. If he had not been ill, Maria would never have become his wife.

Before he was bedridden in a car accident, Zayn was an influential figure in Sedona. His Sephora Group was one of the ten largest companies in the country. He was rumored to be ruthless and domineering, and he traded with the underworld as well as legitimate business. Anyone who stood in his way had to pay a high price.

Maria never expected to marry a man like Zayn. As she lost herself in thought, her bedroom door opened. It was James! "I'm sorry, Maria! I've been too busy to meet you today," James said, approaching Maria with a false sincerity on her face. "I just married your uncle," Maria said coldly. "Do I have to teach you how to call me?"

" I wanted to run off with you because I didn't want you to have a hard life. Uncle Zane is effectively a dead man, so you doesn't have to do anything while you're married to him. When he dies, I'll get you a good lawyer and make sure you gets all his fortune!" James eagerly grabbed Maria's hand and continued, "Then all he has will be ours!"

Maria then as she recalled the earlier scene that she was spotted between James and Katherine, and she was disgusted. "Let go!" she shouted, shaking his hand violently. Her sudden scream startled James. Was it the Maria he knew? Maria was always calm and kind, and she never raised her voice to him. did she find out something?

Feeling guilty, James approached Maria to explain her situation. The next moment his eyes shifted to something behind Maria. His eyes widened in disbelief as if he had seen a ghost.

"He...he..." James muttered. Zayn lay on his bed and slowly began to open his eyes...

Being second best is practically in my DNA. My sister got the love, the attention, the spotlight. And now, even her damn fiancé. Technically, Rhys Granger was my fiancé now-billionaire, devastatingly hot, and a walking Wall Street wet dream. My parents shoved me into the engagement after Catherine disappeared, and honestly? I didn't mind. I'd crushed on Rhys for years. This was my chance, right? My turn to be the chosen one? Wrong. One night, he slapped me. Over a mug. A stupid, chipped, ugly mug my sister gave him years ago. That's when it hit me-he didn't love me. He didn't even see me. I was just a warm-bodied placeholder for the woman he actually wanted. And apparently, I wasn't even worth as much as a glorified coffee cup. So I slapped him right back, dumped his ass, and prepared for disaster-my parents losing their minds, Rhys throwing a billionaire tantrum, his terrifying family plotting my untimely demise. Obviously, I needed alcohol. A lot of alcohol. Enter him. Tall, dangerous, unfairly hot. The kind of man who makes you want to sin just by existing. I'd met him only once before, and that night, he just happened to be at the same bar as my drunk, self-pitying self. So I did the only logical thing: I dragged him into a hotel room and ripped off his clothes. It was reckless. It was stupid. It was completely ill-advised. But it was also: Best. Sex. Of. My. Life. And, as it turned out, the best decision I'd ever made. Because my one-night stand isn't just some random guy. He's richer than Rhys, more powerful than my entire family, and definitely more dangerous than I should be playing with. And now, he's not letting me go.

I thought I was waking up in the arms of Arthur, the man I loved. But as the morning light hit the Hamptons estate, the man buttoning his cuffs by the window turned around with eyes like chips of ice. It was Augustus Riddle, Arthur’s cruel younger brother, and I had just spent the night whispering confessions of love into the wrong man's ear. The night I thought was a beautiful beginning turned into a devastating nightmare. Instead of comfort, Gus treated me like a stain on his expensive carpet, scribbling a check for "services rendered" before shoving me into a dark service corridor to hide my existence from his brother. "How much does it cost to buy your silence?" He sneered, before leaving me barefoot in a torrential downpour while he drove away in a luxury Cadillac. Four years later, I am a struggling actress in Los Angeles, working double shifts as a barista just to keep the lights on. My life was finally stable until my roommate dragged me to a high-end dinner to meet her new "influential" boyfriend. The man sitting at the table, looking more arrogant and lethal than ever, was Augustus. He spent the entire night humiliating me, calling me a pathetic amateur and a social climber in front of my only friends. When I fled into the rain and collapsed on the sidewalk, skinning my knee until I bled, he watched from his car. He saw me clutching a plastic baggie containing the taped-together pieces of that four-year-old check—the only proof of my shame. He looked at me like roadkill, rolled up his window, and drove off into the dark. I couldn't understand why he was doing this. Why did he hate me enough to crush me, yet remember that I couldn't handle the smell of cigarette smoke? Why did he leave me bleeding in the street, only to send expensive medical supplies and coffee to my door the very next morning? "I'm moving out." I told my roommates, realizing that Gus Riddle didn't just want to destroy me; he wanted to haunt me. I grabbed my suitcase and walked out with eighty dollars to my name, finally ready to disappear into the city before he could burn the rest of my life to the ground.

For seven years, I drank the bitter tonic my fiancé, Alpha Adrian, gave me, believing it would cure my "wolfless" defect. I was wrong. It was poison. He wasn't trying to heal me; he was keeping me weak so he could replace me with my foster sister, Ariel. When the fire consumed the Alpha's Wing, I was trapped under a burning beam, my legs crushed. Adrian kicked down the door. I reached out to him, screaming for help. But he didn't look at me. He looked at Ariel, who was lying on the floor in a silk nightgown. He scooped her up, cradling her like she was the only thing that mattered. I begged him not to leave me. Instead of helping, he used his Alpha Command on me, his voice booming with supernatural weight. "Stay put! I'll be back for you!" It was a lie. He used his power to freeze me in the inferno and left me to burn alive. I survived, only to watch him publicly reject me for her the next day, with my own father's blessing. They called me a "genetic dead end." They thought I would crawl away and die in shame. I didn't. I limped up the mountain to the Neutral Lands to find the one man everyone fears-the exiled Alpha, Garth Morgan. "I have the Gamma Bloodline Scroll," I told the massive figure emerging from the shadows. "I don't want your gratitude," Garth growled, his eyes like storm clouds. "I'm not here for gratitude," I replied, staring him down. "I'm here to make a deal with the devil."

My bank account showed exactly $42.18, and my student loan notifications were flashing red. I lived in a sweltering Queens apartment with my Aunt Lydia, where the air was thick with the smell of stale frying oil and the constant threat of being homeless. Lydia handed me a grainy photo of a man twice my age and told me she had already "sold" me to him. He was a dry cleaner looking for a wife, and in exchange for my hand, he would pay off her credit cards and my debt. If I didn't show up for the date that night, my boxes would be on the curb by midnight. I arrived at the cafe in a state of panic, my selective mutism making it impossible to even breathe. In the crowded room, I accidentally sat at the wrong table. Instead of the man from the photo, I found myself facing Gerhard Holcomb—the cold, terrifyingly handsome billionaire whose family owned the very museum where I worked. He didn't send me away; instead, he studied my trembling hands and offered me a different deal: a two-year contract marriage, a two-million-dollar payout, and a strict clause forbidding any children. I signed the papers and moved into his Park Avenue penthouse, thinking I was finally safe. But when I went back to the old apartment to retrieve the only memento of my dead parents, Lydia lashed out, leaving me bleeding from a head wound. Gerhard’s retaliation was absolute—he had her arrested and her building foreclosed on within hours, claiming he was simply "protecting his assets." As I recovered in his silent, glass-walled home, I saw a call from a famous socialite flash on his phone, and a cold truth settled in my gut. I wasn't just a wife; I was a placeholder, a silent shield used to fend off the women from his past. I looked at the massive pink diamond on my finger and realized the silence I had lived in my whole life was about to become my most expensive prison. I had traded a life of poverty for a high-stakes game of shadows, and now I had to survive the man who claimed to own me.
