Billionaire Contract Bride The Bet Chapter 1 Katie POV

Katie POV

My dad shouted from the living room, "Katie, hurry, I will be late for the meeting."

"Young Miss, how long will it take you to get dressed? Should I come up and get you myself?" Dad kept yelling.

Why I must accompany him to this meeting is beyond me. He is disrupting my calm because he has a pointless meeting, and I have things to accomplish. A lot of the time, my dad forces me to gamble with him.

When I walked into the room and saw him standing there in this tuxedo suit, I immediately rolled my eyes.

I simply followed him in silence without saying anything. "Took you long enough, let's go, I am running out of time."

He questioned, already enraged, "Young Miss, can't you lock the door?"

I mockingly said, "Take a look, Dad, my hands are tired," as I showed him my rainbow-painted nails.

He said angrily, "Where are your manners, young lady? Let's cut this bullshit, shall we?" I grinned at him because, when he's upset, he has the face of a giant clown.

"Since Mum doesn't own any expensive jewelry and, as far as I know, barely stays with her married gambler, Dad, can we just leave the house now?" I said as I started to walk to the car.

As I was taking pictures to send to my friend, I asked my Dad, "Do you know who you are Gambling with today?"

"I am going to win a lot today, girl, this individual is simply a youngster in my eyes," he exclaimed with a smile.

I looked at him and said, "remember the last time you said this Mother had to pay your debt?"

He responded while still grinning, "Oh my dear don't worry you simply distract the player and leave the rest for me"

The journey was silent. I carried on talking to my best friend.

I went inside the casino. Due to the blue color of the utilized bulb, it was dark. This place always has a pleasant and welcoming odor.

I made my way over to the bar to get a quick beverage. I detest drinking since it gives me a headache the next day.

Furthermore, I got my drink from the bartender and headed over to where they typically gambled. As I got closer, I saw my father laughing heartily with his cronies. Before approaching, I muttered to myself, "Junks of gamblers, old fools."

One of my dad's friends said, "Ahhh, I can see you are here with the little witch today, make sure you distract all our players well girl, I don't want to lose."

They first nicknamed me a little witch and said I was born for this kind of thing...

"Ugh... Next time, you idiot, don't stand in the road." She hit me and was unable to even express regret.

This thug jolted me out of my reverie. She punched me before calling me an idiot as she left. I'm glad I missed seeing her face. I pondered this as I got up from the ground and went in the door to the casino.

Furthermore, I waited at the far end for my dad and his companion so that I might draw the opponent's attention away from them. My dad's turn is awful.

I was astounded to see my dad's competitor, a female wearing a two-piece suit. She appeared to be someone in her late twenties or early thirties.

"A woman wants to gamble with me?" Hahaha... She remained quiet, staring at him with boredom as my dad laughed, "You would like to go home poor and in tears." I could hear and see him bragging once more.

She didn't have a drink with her, so I had to give her one to divert her. I went to her back and kept the drink by her side as I said, "I think you need this."

She didn't respond; instead, she simply stared at me, then the drink, and turned to face my father, who was laughing and joking with his buddies about how wealthy he would be today.

"Let's get started!" Wow, don't undervalue this woman; she is a boss in this situation. She continued to amass all of my dad's money.

She smirked and replied, "800 million." She must have known my dad didn't have any money on him because I was making every effort to divert her attention.

I could see my father was furious. His face was already pretty red. He spun around, shoving all the women off his shoulders, then had a short conversation with his friends.

"I bet with my daughter" he remarked as he turned around, which was the most stunning thing I had ever heard.

Most people were shouting and complaining, and as I stood there astonished with tears already brimming in my eyes, she turned around and grinned. My father was still laughing with his friend.

"You can't do that, Dad". I began speaking before she interrupted me.

This was the first time she had spoken since they began playing, "Deal, let's do it."

The rain in Detroit was slick with grime when my family finally came to fetch me. They didn't want a reunion; they wanted a sacrificial lamb to marry into the Kaufman empire to save their failing business. I thought I was just being sold off, but the limo ride ended under a dark overpass where six hired thugs were waiting with chains. My own sister had ordered them to "break my spirit" so I’d be a shaking, pathetic mess by the time I reached the altar. They called me "Detroit trash" and sprayed air freshener when I sat on their leather seats. My stepmother wanted a video of me begging for my life, and my father was ready to trade me like a used car to a man everyone called a "vegetable." They expected a submissive country girl, unaware that I was a high-level "cleaner" who could snap a radius bone before they could even scream. When I finally reached the Kaufman estate, I found my fiancé, Barron, slumped in a wheelchair, drooling and silent. But as soon as the doors closed, the "invalid" grabbed my wrist with a grip of iron and whispered a command that changed everything. I didn't understand why my own blood was so desperate to see me destroyed. What had I ever done to deserve a hit squad and a forced marriage to a man they thought was a corpse? But Barron isn't a vegetable, and I'm not a victim. We just touched down at the Moon family gala in a matte-black helicopter, and as the doors slide open, the "broken" bride is about to show them exactly what happens when you throw away the wrong daughter. "If we're going to crash a party," Barron whispered, his eyes burning with lethal clarity, "we should make an entrance."

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.

The heavy iron gates of the Wilderness Correction Camp groaned as they released me after three years of state-sponsored hell. I stood on the dirt road, clutching a plastic bag that held my entire life, waiting for the family that claimed they sent me there for "rehab." My brother, Brady, picked me up in a luxury SUV only to throw me out onto a deserted highway in the middle of a brewing storm. He told me I was a "public relations nightmare" and that the rain might finally wash the "stink" of the camp off me. He drove away, leaving me to limp miles through the mud on a snapped ankle. When I finally dragged myself to our family estate, my mother didn't offer a hug; she gasped in horror because my muddy clothes were ruining her Italian marble. They didn't give me my old room back. Instead, they banished me to a moldy gardener’s shack and hired a "babysitter" to make sure I didn't embarrass them further. My sister, Kaleigh, stood there in white cashmere, pretending to cry while clinging to her fiancé, Ambrose—the man who had once been mine. They all treated me like a volatile junkie, refusing to acknowledge that Kaleigh was the one who planted the drugs in my bag three years ago. They wanted to believe I was broken so they wouldn't have to feel guilty about the "wellness retreat" that was actually a torture chamber. I sat in the dark of that shed, feeling the cooling gel on the cigarette burns that covered my arms, and realized they had made a fatal mistake. They thought they had erased me, but I had returned with a roadmap of scars and a hidden satellite phone. At dinner, I didn't beg for their love. I simply rolled up my sleeves and showed them the price of their silence. As the wine spilled and the lies crumbled, I sent a single text to the only person I trusted: "I'm in. Let them simmer." The hunt was finally on.

I was the titan of Wall Street until an indictment and an ankle monitor turned my penthouse into a gilded cage. To save face, I was forced into a marriage with Elza, a "mute" girl from the Schmidt family whom I treated as nothing more than a silent piece of furniture while my empire crumbled. The night I was poisoned at a high-society gala, a mysterious server in an oversized uniform saved my life with terrifying, clinical precision. They disappeared into the night, leaving me with a silver cufflink and a burning obsession to find the shadow who held my life in their hands. Back home, I took my frustration out on Elza, telling her she was "exhausting to look at" and "smelled like sickness" after her charity visits. Her own family treated her like a stray dog, trying to humiliate her at the next gala by dressing her in what they claimed was a cheap knockoff while whispering to the press that she was nothing but a high-end escort. "Stay out of my way," I would growl at her, never noticing the steel in her eyes. I sat at my table, watching my rivals' stocks plummet and wondering who "The Zero"—the legendary financial ghost—really was. I never suspected that the woman I ignored was the same one solving the equations that were currently burning Manhattan to the ground. The injustice peaked when Elza stood before the city's elite, not as a victim, but as a queen. She dropped over a hundred million dollars to buy back her family’s legacy, revealing a secret fortune that made my own empire look like pocket change. As I grabbed her wrist and saw the small red mole hidden beneath her watch, the truth hit me like a physical blow. The silent wife I had despised was the savior I had been hunting, and she was finally done playing the victim. "We have a lot to talk about, wife," I whispered, realizing I had been sleeping next to the most dangerous woman in the world.
