Written Hearts Chapter 1 Revisiting The Past

Emily had always been a dreamer. From the time she was a little girl, she had an insatiable curiosity about the world, and her imagination knew no bounds. Growing up in the picturesque town of Willowbrook, nestled in the heart of the United States, she often found herself gazing out of her bedroom window, wondering what lay beyond the horizon.

As a child, Emily had been enchanted by her grandfather's stories. He had been a world traveler, a man who had explored distant lands and brought back tales of adventure and discovery. Emily would spend hours sitting at his feet, wide-eyed and captivated by his descriptions of far-off places, cultures, and people. It was from her grandfather that she had inherited her love for storytelling and her passion for art.

Now, at the age of seventeen, Emily was on the cusp of adulthood. She had just graduated from Willowbrook High School, and the world lay before her, full of promise and uncertainty. She had been accepted into a prestigious art school in New York City, a place she had always dreamed of visiting. It was an opportunity that excited and terrified her in equal measure.

On a warm summer day, Emily stood in the dusty attic of her childhood home, surrounded by cardboard boxes and forgotten relics of the past. Her parents were busy in the living room, discussing the logistics of her impending move to the city. They were excited for her but also worried, as any parents would be when their child left the nest.

Emily, however, was lost in a world of nostalgia. She had always been sentimental, and today, as she rummaged through old mementos, she couldn't help but smile at the memories they invoked. There were faded photographs of family vacations, souvenirs from her grandfather's travels, and a dusty box that contained a collection of handwritten letters.

Curiosity piqued, Emily carefully opened the box and found herself staring at a stack of envelopes tied together with a faded ribbon. She recognized her own handwriting on some of them, though it had clearly evolved over the years. The letters were addressed to someone named Alex.

Her heart skipped a beat as she remembered. Alex was her childhood pen pal, a friend she had corresponded with for several years. They had been assigned as pen pals in the third grade as part of a school project, and their friendship had blossomed through handwritten letters and later, emails. They had shared their dreams, their fears, and the intricacies of their lives, even though they had never met in person.

But somewhere along the way, their letters had grown less frequent, and eventually, they had lost touch. Emily couldn't quite recall when or why it had happened. Life had a way of getting in the way, she supposed.

She carefully untied the ribbon and began to read the first letter. It was dated several years ago, and the words were filled with the innocence of youth. Alex had written about his adventures in Europe, describing the grandeur of ancient cities and the taste of exotic foods. Emily's heart swelled with nostalgia as she read her own response, sharing stories of her small-town life and her dreams of becoming an artist.

The more she read, the more she felt transported back in time. It was as though the attic had become a portal to her past, and she was reliving those precious moments of connection with Alex. She read through the letters, tracing the evolution of their friendship through words on paper.

Emily's parents called her from downstairs, interrupting her journey down memory lane. She carefully placed the letters back in the box, tied them with the faded ribbon, and tucked the box under her arm. As she descended the narrow attic stairs, she couldn't shake the feeling that she had stumbled upon something significant.

In the living room, her parents were discussing the logistics of her move to New York City, but Emily's mind was elsewhere. She excused herself, retreated to her room, and closed the door behind her.

Sitting at her desk, she pulled out her laptop and logged into her email account. It had been years since she had used it to correspond with Alex, but she had a hunch. She typed his name into the search bar and hit enter.

To her surprise, an email address popped up-one that she hadn't used in years. It was an old address, one that she had almost forgotten. It was Alex's email address.

Her heart raced as she clicked on it, hoping against hope that it was still active. A draft of an unsent email from years ago appeared on the screen. She quickly composed a new message, her fingers trembling with excitement.

"Dear Alex," she began, "I hope this email finds you well. It's been a long time since we last corresponded, but I recently stumbled upon our old letters, and I couldn't help but think of you. I hope you remember me, and I hope you're still out there exploring the world. I would love to hear from you again."

She hit send and stared at the screen, her heart pounding. What if he had moved on? What if he didn't remember her? But as she waited for a response, a glimmer of hope filled her heart. The past was coming alive once more, and Emily couldn't wait to see where it would lead.

HONEY MULLINS

Six years ago, I was a naive girl sold by my father to the powerful Sanders estate, only to be tossed onto the streets after a brutal assault they labeled "marital infidelity." I fled the country pregnant and broken, hiding from the shadow of a husband I had never even met. Now, I've returned to New York with my triplets to sign the final divorce papers and disappear forever. But Archibald Sanders-the man I was told was a crippled recluse-intercepted us with the cold precision of a predator. He didn't see the woman his family destroyed; he saw a gold-digger who had shamed his name. His security team hunted us to a grimy motel, using tactical force to snatch my children away and drag me to his glass-walled empire. In his office, he loomed over me, demanding a DNA test and threatening to throw me in prison while my babies were lost to the foster system. He was convinced I'd cheated, yet he stared at my sons with a haunting confusion, unable to ignore the stormy blue eyes that were a perfect mirror of his own. I stood there, paralyzed by his scent-the sharp tang of rain and expensive leather that triggered the icy dread of my worst nightmares. How could he accuse me of betrayal when he felt exactly like the monster who had shattered my life in that dark hotel room? "I'll sign anything," I sobbed, "just give me my kids." But the game changed when my five-year-old son hacked the tower's security, holding the skyscraper hostage to save me. In the chaos, a fragile, silent boy-Archibald's secret son-wandered into the room and reached for me as if I were his missing soul. Archibald's face turned to stone as he tore up the agreement and locked the doors. "Until I find out why my son is looking at you like that," he growled, "you aren't going anywhere."

Landslide

My bank account showed exactly $42.18, and my student loan notifications were flashing red. I lived in a sweltering Queens apartment with my Aunt Lydia, where the air was thick with the smell of stale frying oil and the constant threat of being homeless. Lydia handed me a grainy photo of a man twice my age and told me she had already "sold" me to him. He was a dry cleaner looking for a wife, and in exchange for my hand, he would pay off her credit cards and my debt. If I didn't show up for the date that night, my boxes would be on the curb by midnight. I arrived at the cafe in a state of panic, my selective mutism making it impossible to even breathe. In the crowded room, I accidentally sat at the wrong table. Instead of the man from the photo, I found myself facing Gerhard Holcomb—the cold, terrifyingly handsome billionaire whose family owned the very museum where I worked. He didn't send me away; instead, he studied my trembling hands and offered me a different deal: a two-year contract marriage, a two-million-dollar payout, and a strict clause forbidding any children. I signed the papers and moved into his Park Avenue penthouse, thinking I was finally safe. But when I went back to the old apartment to retrieve the only memento of my dead parents, Lydia lashed out, leaving me bleeding from a head wound. Gerhard’s retaliation was absolute—he had her arrested and her building foreclosed on within hours, claiming he was simply "protecting his assets." As I recovered in his silent, glass-walled home, I saw a call from a famous socialite flash on his phone, and a cold truth settled in my gut. I wasn't just a wife; I was a placeholder, a silent shield used to fend off the women from his past. I looked at the massive pink diamond on my finger and realized the silence I had lived in my whole life was about to become my most expensive prison. I had traded a life of poverty for a high-stakes game of shadows, and now I had to survive the man who claimed to own me.

SHANA GRAY

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.
