CHAPTER 1

(Kia's point of view)

I woke up because it felt like someone was patting my cheek so I opened my eyes and I was not mistaken because the face of the conductor appeared to me.

"Lady! we are here in Manila, wake up and come down." Said the conductor, so I looked out the window to see if I was actually in Manila.

When I looked out the window, I was already in Manila because of the tall buildings and the many people walking and the many cars on the road.

so I quickly got off the bus, of course I thanked the conductor for waking me up, if you're wondering if I paid, of course, before I fell asleep on the bus, I gave the money.

"Wow, it's beautiful here in Manila." That's all that came out of my mouth because I'm actually in Manila, I can't believe I've set foot here.

I hope I can find a good job here right away, Manila is so big where I can rent, I said in my mind and sighed.

I started walking so that I could find something to eat. While I was walking, I saw old lady picking up her purchases. I said in my mind that there was a hole in her container so I quickly ran to her place.

"Manang let me help you." I offer to manang so she looked at me and smiled so I smiled back and helped her pick up her shopping.

"Thank you for helping, because this plastic has a hole." She said while pointing to the torn plastic so I smiled at her.

"That's not there, I have a basket here made of straw." I said to her, holding out the straw basket, "My mother made that." I smiled back to Manang.

"You're a very kind young lady, thank you for your straw basket." Manang said to me so I asked her. "It looks like you're new here in Manila ah" Manang said to me again.

"Ah yes, I'm new here, I'm looking for a place to rent, so tomorrow I'll start looking for a job because I really need a job....hmm, do you know of anyone I can rent to?"I made a long conversation to Manang, and Manang looked at me with a smile.

"Do you want to work together and live somewhere?" Manang asked me.

"Yes manang, do you know anything?" This is my answer.

"My boss is looking for a new secretary, I can offer you there."Manang said to me with a big smile, so I couldn't help but smile because I was going to work.

"Really manang, can you take me there to your boss so he can interview me?" I asked with a smile to manang, she nodded in response.

"I'll just call my husband to pick us up and introduce you to Señorito." Manang told me so I just nodded in response.

"I'll just call you for a moment." So I nodded to her again.

I hope I can get a job as a secretary so I can immediately send money to mother and to my youngest brother so that mother can be treated and her illness will not get worse. I don't want to lose her from us. I'm not ready yet, but I know that my mother is strong, I know that she can fight, mother. just be patient and I can treat you too, maybe I'll call them later when I'm accepted.I couldn't continue my thoughts when a fancy car stopped in front of me.

"Wow, it's so clean and shiny." That's the only thing I blown out, it's so beautiful, the color is black, the shine is even more shiny than super shiny, you can enjoy it.

suddenly a tall man came out, his body was strong enough to be a model if he walked and he was also handsome-. I couldn't continue my thoughts when manang spoke.

"No señorito, why did you pick us up? Josep can't-" Manang couldn't finish what she was going to say when the rich man suddenly took what manang bought, "Let's go." He said to manang without any emotion.

"Ahh......señorito, I have with me, she's going to work for your company." Manang said nervously so I looked at manang in wonder. Why is she nervous and also she called this señorito does it mean she is the one who needs the secretary of their company?

so I turned to Señorito who was supposed to be looking at me so our eyes met for a few seconds and I also averted my eyes and focused on others, I couldn't make eye contact with him as if I was hypnotized by his gaze.

"Let's talk about that later." Señorito said he was cold so I looked at him again but he was already there and was about to open the door. He walked so fast I thought he was a splash in my mind.

"Come let's go inside, he doesn't want to wait." Manang promised to get in the front of the car, so I followed and got in the back. It's my first time to get into this car.

I looked ahead, I was just so surprised that he was looking at me, so without hesitation I avoided looking at him, I was very nervous while holding my chest.

He's still looking at me, I took a bite to make him come back to reality, he turned on the engine and started driving.

I was just looking out the window. I still can't believe I'm here in Manila.

so quiet I didn't realize that my eyes were slowly closing until I fell asleep...

I was once the heiress to the Solomon empire, but after it crumbled, I became the "charity case" ward of the wealthy Hyde family. For years, I lived in their shadows, clinging to the promise that Anson Hyde would always be my protector. That promise shattered when Anson walked into the ballroom with Claudine Chapman on his arm. Claudine was the girl who had spent years making my life a living hell, and now Anson was announcing their engagement to the world. The humiliation was instant. Guests sneered at my cheap dress, and a waiter intentionally sloshed champagne over me, knowing I was a nobody. Anson didn't even look my way; he was too busy whispering possessively to his new fiancée. I was a ghost in my own home, watching my protector celebrate with my tormentor. The betrayal burned. I realized I wasn't a ward; I was a pawn Anson had kept on a shelf until he found a better trade. I had no money, no allies, and a legal trust fund that Anson controlled with a flick of his wrist. Fleeing to the library, I stumbled into Dallas Koch-a titan of industry and my best friend's father. He was a wall of cold, absolute power that even the Hydes feared. "Marry me," I blurted out, desperate to find a shield Anson couldn't climb. Dallas didn't laugh. He pulled out a marriage agreement and a heavy fountain pen. "Sign," he commanded, his voice a low rumble. "But if you walk out that door with me, you never go back." I signed my name, trading my life for the only man dangerous enough to keep me safe.

I went to the City Clerk’s office for a routine copy of my marriage license to finalize a trust fund audit. I expected a simple piece of paper, but the clerk’s pitying look told me my entire life was a lie. "The license was never finalized, Ms. Oliver. In the eyes of the state, you are single." The three-hundred-guest wedding at the Plaza and the Vogue features meant nothing. My husband, Gray Cooley, had intentionally filed the documents with a "procedural defect" so he could discard me without a legal divorce. Moments later, an iCloud invite titled "Our Little Secret" popped up on my screen. It was a photo of my best friend, Brylee, holding a positive pregnancy test at our Hamptons estate. Gray’s text to her was the final blow: "Happy anniversary, babe. This baby is the best gift. Once the trust unlocks today, we’re done with the charade." I soon discovered they were even stealing my career, reassigning my architectural masterpiece to Brylee while preparing my eviction notice. Gray's mother called me a "barren mule" in a leaked recording, mocking the infertility I suffered after saving Gray’s life in a construction accident. I wasn't a wife; I was a three-year placeholder used to secure his inheritance. How could the man I bled for treat me like a disposable prop? How could my best friend carry his child while pretending to comfort me through my darkest moments? The betrayal burned until it turned into a cold, hard stone of fury. I didn't cry. Instead, I walked into the penthouse of the Barretts, the Cooleys' most powerful rivals. I signed a marriage contract with Kane Barrett, the man the tabloids called the "Beast of Wall Street." "I want a wedding," I told his father, my voice steady and lethal. "Bigger than the one I had with Gray." If they wanted me gone, they would have to watch me become the woman who owns their world.

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.

The rain in Detroit was slick with grime when my family finally came to fetch me. They didn't want a reunion; they wanted a sacrificial lamb to marry into the Kaufman empire to save their failing business. I thought I was just being sold off, but the limo ride ended under a dark overpass where six hired thugs were waiting with chains. My own sister had ordered them to "break my spirit" so I’d be a shaking, pathetic mess by the time I reached the altar. They called me "Detroit trash" and sprayed air freshener when I sat on their leather seats. My stepmother wanted a video of me begging for my life, and my father was ready to trade me like a used car to a man everyone called a "vegetable." They expected a submissive country girl, unaware that I was a high-level "cleaner" who could snap a radius bone before they could even scream. When I finally reached the Kaufman estate, I found my fiancé, Barron, slumped in a wheelchair, drooling and silent. But as soon as the doors closed, the "invalid" grabbed my wrist with a grip of iron and whispered a command that changed everything. I didn't understand why my own blood was so desperate to see me destroyed. What had I ever done to deserve a hit squad and a forced marriage to a man they thought was a corpse? But Barron isn't a vegetable, and I'm not a victim. We just touched down at the Moon family gala in a matte-black helicopter, and as the doors slide open, the "broken" bride is about to show them exactly what happens when you throw away the wrong daughter. "If we're going to crash a party," Barron whispered, his eyes burning with lethal clarity, "we should make an entrance."
