The Underestimated Secret Heir Chapter 1 Campus Life

"Cassandra, what's happening here? Don't tell me my eyes aren't deceiving me. Oh, it is; it's deceiving me because this can't happen to me. No, you can't do this!" Rex yelled at Cassandra, who was still lying on the bed with no remorse.

Rex and Cassandra had been secretly dating. Many times, Rex approached Cassandra and brought up the topic that he wanted an open relationship, but Cassandra would threaten that they'd split if he ever brought up the topic, so he decided to remain silent over the matter like a slave.

On a fateful afternoon, a day before the coming celebration of Valentine's Day which everyone among the students has been longing for. Rex and his friend Andrea were discussing at his dormitory as Andrea was also busy scrolling down on his phone and browsing the internet.

"Bro, guess what!" Andrea exclaimed out of excitement after coming across a post and seeing the picture of Kanye West and Cassandra.

"Yes, you know I'm not good at guessing, so go straight to the point and stop beating about the bush," Rex reluctantly replied.

"Kanye West has proposed to Cassandra!"

"Which Cassandra are you talking about? You mean Cassandra Knight?" Rex asked in disbelief.

"Exactly, bro, the girl is just f*ckin' lucky to have such a person propose to her; I'm happy for her," Andrea replied with a smile on his face.

"Come on, man, you always make expensive jokes! Go take a pill if you're daydreaming," Rex replied in disbelief.

"I bet you, it's not a joke or daydream either; you can check the post by yourself," Andrea said, trying to hand Rex the phone, but he barked at him: "Go away with your fake news, please."

Andrea stared at him in disbelief. How could Rex find it difficult to believe what he told him? He stood up to leave, but Rex grabbed him back.

"Where did you say you got this false news from?" he asked Andrea with a confused look.

Andrea thought for a while, thinking about what could be the cause of Rex's action. He wondered why Rex would doubt him and refuse to see the evidence he was showing him.

"Man, if you can't believe it, then forget about it. Let's talk about something reasonable; besides, I don't know why you acted like you're not happy with the girl, or do you keep a grudge against her, or have you in any way had any problem or misunderstanding with her? Tell me so I can reconcile both of you," Andrea suggested.

"How many times do you want me to say go away before you hear me out? Or you didn't hear me when I said that you should buzz off? Get the hell out of my sight. I do not want to see you" he yelled at him.

"I do not wish to say anything to you or speak with you. Please leave. And I'm not holding any grudges against anyone, I hope you respect my request and stay away from me." He explained in a harsh tone.

"Alright, man, we are not quarrelling, let me leave your presence. Just a few minutes ago, we discussed the last event that was hosted by the campus, how the big boys stormed the event, and how the audience got carried away and lost concentration on the ongoing program and focused on the big champs and their exotic cars.

"Just a few minutes ago and you had already developed mood swings; I wonder what would happen if you were a girl," Andrea said and left the room, leaving Rex isolated.

As soon as Andrea left the room, Rex rushed to his phone, which its screen had been broken to the point of being unrepairable. He unlocked it and wanted to check what Andrea said to confirm it himself. He searched for Macro on his app list but could not find it, and just then he realized he had deleted it months ago as it consumed more data than other social media he was using. He could not afford to exhaust 2GB of mobile data only on watching reels and short videos on Macro, while 500MB would go a long way for him on other social media platforms. He hissed as he realized he could not see the post by himself if he did not install the Macro app.

He opened his app store to install it, and after typing the name 'Macro', it appeared. He pressed the install option, however, it stopped after rolling for a few seconds; it had only loaded two percent of the app data.

"Gosh! What's wrong with this phone of mine, It seems the network issue has started again,' He hissed and exited the app, he reopened it, and had the same experience, being confused, he decided to check his data balance, however, he realized it had been exhausted. He became angry and instantly dialled his usual code for borrowing, but the response he got annoyed him: "Dear customer, you have exceeded your standard limit of borrowing; kindly clear up your existing balance of $200 to continue. Thank you."

"Oh, sh*t! Why now? Why now I wanted to confirm if what Andrea was saying was true," he said and angrily flung his phone back onto his bed.

He dressed to go out as his curiosity to find out upsurges, maybe this could decrease it. He was dressing to go to the campus handball field.

"No, this can't be true. I trust Cassandra, and I know she won't do that. Maybe Andrea mistook her for someone else because Kanye is good at changing and dumping girls; he may have thought Cassandra could fall for that sh*t," he hissed.

"After how many years we have been together, starting from our childhood, Andrea now thinks Kanye's wealth could move my girl," he monologued as he was heading to the handball field.

After walking halfway to the handball court, he realized going to the field would worsen his depressed mode, as the majority of the handball players were among those who despised him and would not allow him to participate in playing or allow him to watch without throwing abusive remarks at him.

He remembered the last time he went there, one of them even tried to bully him, but he escaped, not minding that he could kick the guy's ass out. He fled because he knew others would not stare at him while he beat their colleague.

To avoid being made to feel uncomfortable by those boys, he returned home.

"No, alright, I'll find out by myself, I will find out when I visit Cassandra this Valentine's Day, yes, I'll find out, and I'll make Andrea suffer for this he put me into if it eventually becomes a lie. Few more days to Valentine's Day; we shall see," he smirked.

The rain in Detroit was slick with grime when my family finally came to fetch me. They didn't want a reunion; they wanted a sacrificial lamb to marry into the Kaufman empire to save their failing business. I thought I was just being sold off, but the limo ride ended under a dark overpass where six hired thugs were waiting with chains. My own sister had ordered them to "break my spirit" so I’d be a shaking, pathetic mess by the time I reached the altar. They called me "Detroit trash" and sprayed air freshener when I sat on their leather seats. My stepmother wanted a video of me begging for my life, and my father was ready to trade me like a used car to a man everyone called a "vegetable." They expected a submissive country girl, unaware that I was a high-level "cleaner" who could snap a radius bone before they could even scream. When I finally reached the Kaufman estate, I found my fiancé, Barron, slumped in a wheelchair, drooling and silent. But as soon as the doors closed, the "invalid" grabbed my wrist with a grip of iron and whispered a command that changed everything. I didn't understand why my own blood was so desperate to see me destroyed. What had I ever done to deserve a hit squad and a forced marriage to a man they thought was a corpse? But Barron isn't a vegetable, and I'm not a victim. We just touched down at the Moon family gala in a matte-black helicopter, and as the doors slide open, the "broken" bride is about to show them exactly what happens when you throw away the wrong daughter. "If we're going to crash a party," Barron whispered, his eyes burning with lethal clarity, "we should make an entrance."

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.

The heavy thud of the release stamp was the only goodbye I got from the warden after five years in federal prison. I stepped out into the blinding sun, expecting the same flash of paparazzi bulbs that had seen me dragged away in handcuffs, but there was only a single black limousine idling on the shoulder of the road. Inside sat my mother and sister, clutching champagne and looking at my frayed coat with pure disgust. They didn't offer a welcome home; instead, they tossed a thick legal document onto the table and told me I was dead to the city. "Gavin and I are getting engaged," my sister Mia sneered, flicking a credit card at me like I was a stray dog. "He doesn't need a convict ex-fiancée hanging around." Even after I saved their lives from an armed kidnapping attempt by ramming the attackers off the road, they rewarded me by leaving me stranded in the dirt. When I finally ran into Gavin, the man who had framed me, he pinned me against a wall and threatened to send me back to a cell if I ever dared to show my face at their wedding. They had stolen my biotech research, ruined my name, and let me rot for half a decade while they lived off my brilliance. They thought they had broken me, leaving me with nothing but an expired chapstick and a few old photos in a plastic bag. What they didn't know was that I had spent those five years becoming "Dr. X," a shadow consultant with five hundred million dollars in crypto and a secret that would bring the city to its knees. I wasn't just a victim anymore; I was a weapon, and I was pregnant with the heir they thought they had erased. I walked into the Melton estate and made an offer to the most powerful man in New York. "I'll save your grandfather's life," I told Horatio Melton, staring him down. "But the price is your last name. I'm taking back what's mine, and I'm starting with the man who thinks he's marrying my sister."

I was the titan of Wall Street until an indictment and an ankle monitor turned my penthouse into a gilded cage. To save face, I was forced into a marriage with Elza, a "mute" girl from the Schmidt family whom I treated as nothing more than a silent piece of furniture while my empire crumbled. The night I was poisoned at a high-society gala, a mysterious server in an oversized uniform saved my life with terrifying, clinical precision. They disappeared into the night, leaving me with a silver cufflink and a burning obsession to find the shadow who held my life in their hands. Back home, I took my frustration out on Elza, telling her she was "exhausting to look at" and "smelled like sickness" after her charity visits. Her own family treated her like a stray dog, trying to humiliate her at the next gala by dressing her in what they claimed was a cheap knockoff while whispering to the press that she was nothing but a high-end escort. "Stay out of my way," I would growl at her, never noticing the steel in her eyes. I sat at my table, watching my rivals' stocks plummet and wondering who "The Zero"—the legendary financial ghost—really was. I never suspected that the woman I ignored was the same one solving the equations that were currently burning Manhattan to the ground. The injustice peaked when Elza stood before the city's elite, not as a victim, but as a queen. She dropped over a hundred million dollars to buy back her family’s legacy, revealing a secret fortune that made my own empire look like pocket change. As I grabbed her wrist and saw the small red mole hidden beneath her watch, the truth hit me like a physical blow. The silent wife I had despised was the savior I had been hunting, and she was finally done playing the victim. "We have a lot to talk about, wife," I whispered, realizing I had been sleeping next to the most dangerous woman in the world.
