"Why are we here?" I asked looking round the futuristic room "You're like an advanced human. The next level of science. You guys are like nature's gift to us and we intend to make full use of your powers" The captain said a worn out look on his face. "What do you plan on doing to us?" I asked fear in my voice He looked me dead in the eye and gave a painful smile and it dawned on me "We're never leaving here, are we?"I muttered. I yawned loudly as I sat in maths class trying to not understand what our further maths teacher was blabbing about and NO, I didn't make a mistake, I was trying to NOT understand.
"How far" I heard a voice whisper to me
I turned my head to see my best friend Alice settle on the seat beside me quietly after sneaking into class through the back door.
I rolled my large dark brown eyes and lay my head on the desk, bored to death.
"I hate this school" I whispered to her
"At the end of day......" Alice whipped her neck to look at me
"School na scam" She concluded in Nigerian pidgin language
I tutted
"Like Nigeria is sooo boring, I wish something out of the blue would just happen" I lamented quietly so that the teacher wouldn't hear us
"Maybe you'll receive that spice that you want in your life today" She said with a mysterious gaze
I raised an eyebrow and we stared at each other briefly before bursting into silent laughter.
We both knew that it would never happen but I sometimes wished my life had a slightly less than normal routine, I wanted something more than waking up with nothing but a headache and trudging to school, going home, doing chores...... Uuughhhh, the list could go on forever and nothing would change after all we never get what we wish for so how could today be any different........
I turned my head on the table so I could look out the window at the sky. Beautiful, dark clouds, birds squeaking, trees swaying, wind whooshing fiercely, more dark clouds and lightening, a tornado forming in the distance. Everything seemed normal to me as I started closing my eyes drowsily then the realization hit me like a truck.
"WHAT! TORNADO, LIGHTENING? WE DON'T EVEN HAVE TORNADOES IN AFRICA" I suddenly yelled shooting up from my table.
Shocked by my sudden outburst, I looked round the class wondering why no one was paying me any attention, everyone was focused on the sudden mayhem outside even the teacher was staring out the window, his protruding belly heaving up and down.
Other classes were becoming rowdy. Our teacher hurriedly left the class just as our principal walked in, mopping his face with a neat handkerchief
"SILENCE" He boomed
The class was still rowdy, of course we would be rowdy. Of course we were still focused on what was happening outside, I was beginning to get worried and scared.
The principal took a deep breath knowing we didn't mind his presence.
"I NEED YOU ALL TO CALM DOWN AND LISTEN" He screamed.
The class went silent with a hush
"GOOD, NOW. THE GOVERNMENT HAS DECLARED A STATE OF EMERGENCY. WE ARE EXPERIENCING THIS STORM WORLDWIDE AND IT MAY CAUSE SEVERE DAMAGE, DUE TO THIS, YOU ARE ALL EXPECTED TO GO STRAIGHT TO YOUR HOMES RIGHT NOW AND LOCK YOURSELF IN UNTIL EVERYWHERE IS CALM. PLEASE MOVE TO YOUR HOUSES"He shouted over the crackling lightening and thunder outside.
There were whoops of joy as students clamoured to get out of school. I hurriedly slung my backpack and waved good bye to Alice
"I'll text you when I get home. Get home safely" I shouted over the chaos as I rushed home struggling with the fierce wind.
6 minutes later, I got home as my house was a stone's throw my the school. I hurriedly entered and bolted the door behind me
"Finally, I was worried" My mum said standing up from the couch where she sat with clasped hands.
"Is everyone alright? Is that a tornado?" I asked breathlessly
"I don't know....... We don't know......No one knows." She said running up the stairs to my younger brothers room as he had begun to wail out of fear
I looked at the TV that was switched on and I slumped on the couch, my eyes glued to the reporter on screen.
"The situation is getting out of control. Experts do not understand this strange phenomenon happening worldwide, the government of Nigeria has imposed a state of emergency..... All citizens are expected to please stay indoors and bolt all doors and windows, switch off all electrical appliances and....... Wait, what's happening? It's getting darker out here..... it's not an eclipse, stay indoors.....don't...." The television suddenly went off.
I stood up in alarm and ran to the window, I rolled up the blind a bit and peeked outside, everywhere was pitch black and it was just 1pm, the suspected tornado was harbouring a lot of lightening strikes and thunder sounds, it was really scary.
"Oh god, oh god, I don't want to die, I don't want to die" was all my stupid mouth could say.
Someone pulled me away from the window and shut it looking at me sternly
"Dad?" I muttered
My dad switched on a flashlight and handed it to me
"Go to your room now Nikki and stay with your brother. Do not open the windows, is that clear?" He boomed.
I nodded hurriedly and taking the flashlight from him, I ran up the stairs, my legs slightly trembling.
I know I wanted something different mother nature but this was getting too much.
