" Who do you think you are? Daring to enter my office like that? " A soft profound voice inquired as she turned out to look at the direction in which a young man in his late thirties made his way in from the main entrance of the chamber. " I am the Devil and I don't need to ask for permission when I make an entry in my premises. " A deep voice stated as he sat on the chair in the last had vacated a while ago by the curvy lady who stood by the window sipping down her booze

Chapter 1 Adriana's FIRST DAY IN THE COMPANY

It was my first day at the office after landing a job at Britain Company. It was a six-month contract in a Britain company in North California. It was around noon as the piles of papers grew big on my desk when my mind drifted away from work by the call from Marcelo my boyfriend.

" Hello sweetheart, How is your day going? I can imagine that you are missing me already. " I answered the call in a soft tone.

" Well, Young lady if you love your life you better stay away from my husband. " A lady from the caller's end stated

" Excuse me, Who are you and why are you picking up my boyfriend's phone? " I inquired furiously and confused as I had dated Mathias for three months and we were supposed to get married a week's time. He has never mentioned to me anything about having a wife except for her ex who got into an accident in the hospital after falling from the fifth floor of the hospital building and died on the spot.

" Babe she is on the phone could you clarify it to her, She is doubting my words and I might end up losing my shit on her. " I heard her talking in the background before I heard a deep voice clear after the throat was cleared before I heard the response from him.

" Hey, "Marcello's voice stated and my heart was racing against my chest like I was stabbed by a knife severely as the knife was twisted inside my heart. I crossed my fingers when replying as I wanted to believe this was just one of his pranks since we were going to get married.

" Who was that crazy B**ch?" I yelled out my heart as I inquired waiting to hear him apologize but it hit me hard what I heard next from his mouth.

" She is not a b**ch but my lawful wedded wife and you were just a task I had to use to make my way up and be glad I got you a job despite your naivety you are a b**tch and I am going to hang up this call and don't bother calling me again. Understood! " Mathias yelled out in a profound voice before he ended the call.

" Wait... " I stated but the call had ended I felt like the world had come against me and it was suffocating me as the temperature in my body had increased and the buttons in my blouse were choking me up so I decided to unbutton several buttons from my shirt to breathe out some air. I sipped down a few gulps of water from my bottle that was on my desk as I tried to concentrate on the work that was piled since I had rent to pay and my several upkeeps relied on the salary given that I had six months which would decide if I would get permanently employed. I did not want to lose everything at once, What would I be?

I was so focused on the files that I did not get to see that my lunch hour break which was recommended by the company at 2 pm had passed and it was evening already the sun was out of the sky and darkness had started to cover the sky while there were no more piles of paperwork to be dealt with. On checking on my phone it was past 9 pm already and the wallpaper on my phone of me and Marcelo brought me back to hush reality of me that I had escaped about hours ago. I felt a sharp pain evolve around me again as tears dropped uncontrollably on my cheeks before a blackout happened in the office where I was and the chamber was filled with hush silence that I had not noted earlier and been the first day I hadn't remember my way out so I had picked up my handbag after switching on my phone flashlight to see where I would stroll through to on the pitch dark office and I ambled to where I thought the elevator was located and as I was wandering I slide on the tiles and before I could meet with the bare floor and I fell on strong arms that held half of my upper body cross through my waistline.

" I found you. " He stated in a profound deep roaring voice.

" What do you think you are doing, Keep your hands off me or I will scream for help and you gonna not like it," I yelled at him as he slowly lifted his hands which were twice mine and stronger than mine.

" Then what are you waiting for, Do you think anyone will come to your aid? " He inquired mockingly before his grip tightened on me and now I was laying on his chest had his strong breasts and with his small hands of mine that I tried pushing myself from his embrace. I knew quite well that no one would come to help and he knew it until I felt a gun around his ribs I don't know how I took it and I was pointing it at the man that I had hit him between his legs and he was groaning in pain. I held the gun like how I used to see in movies and I never thought that it would feel this way in reality.

" Did that Idiot Marcello send you here to finish me off since he knows I know his secret of defiance? " I inquired to the man who responded with deep laughter and that was the only thing I could think of who wanted to get rid of me since I was a threat to him.

" Hahaha, Are you gonna pull that trigger, baby girl, You even don't know how to use a gun. " He asserted with a boastful voice as he slowly moved towards me.

" I said don't dare move an inch from there or a bullet will end in your tinny scalp. " I yelled out and I couldn't tell how I did it but I pulled the trigger and shot the ceiling which made him halt from where he was standing.

" Okay, I won't move and could you at least put that down? " He stated as a devilish smile curved on his face and I thought to myself that this was a psychopath even if I couldn't see his face clearly since the electricity was out.

" Whatever you are, I don't care if you are his mercenary. I want you to send this message back to him. That he will pay for everything he has made me go through. Have you understood what I just said? " I inquired before silence emerged for a while I shot to the ground almost to where he was standing which made him move a meter away in a blink of an eye.

" Okay, I will " He stated

" Okay, Where are the stairs located from this floor? " I inquired waiting for the reply which did not take long.

" On your left, you will spot a door with exit letters on top. " He answered calmly.

" Okay, You better stand there and don't dare to follow me, if you don't want me to end your life today," I stated as I yanked my heels from my feet because this was between life and death. I strolled a little faster as I looked back to the dark figure that I had left behind I didn't see the face clearly before I opened the door and saw the exit and my heart was a bit of some peace after I saw he didn't lie about the exit. I climbed down the stairs from the fifth floor and I think I was on the third floor when the lights were back I don't know how I managed to climb down those stairs without sliding since it was my first day and my heart was racing and it felt like it was about to pop out as I used the elevator and I was on the ground floor where I made my way to where I had parked my car. I opened the driver seat and threw my handbag and gun on the co-drivers seat before I started the car engine. It was around 20 minutes when I made it outside my apartment, I a lighted from my car after taking possession of my belongings inside. I could not feel at ease outside knowing someone out there needed me dead. It was a until I made it to my apartment and found a gift box outside my apartment door where I opened the door as I carefully pushed the box inside the apartment and locked myself from inside before I rushed to my kitchen and poured myself a glass of wine as I gulp the whole glass before I switched on the lights and I wished that the earth would swallow me alive to what caught my sight.

I was sitting in the Presidential Suite of The Pierre, wearing a Vera Wang gown worth more than most people earn in a decade. It was supposed to be the wedding of the century, the final move to merge two of Manhattan's most powerful empires. Then my phone buzzed. It was an Instagram Story from my fiancé, Jameson. He was at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris with a caption that read: "Fuck the chains. Chasing freedom." He hadn't just gotten cold feet; he had abandoned me at the altar to run across the world. My father didn't come in to comfort me. He burst through the door roaring about a lost acquisition deal, telling me the Holland Group would strip our family for parts if the ceremony didn't happen by noon. My stepmother wailed about us becoming the laughingstock of the Upper East Side. The Holland PR director even suggested I fake a "panic attack" to make myself look weak and sympathetic to save their stock price. Then Jameson’s sleazy cousin, Pierce, walked in with a lopsided grin, offering to "step in" and marry me just to get his hands on my assets. I looked at them and realized I wasn't a daughter or a bride to anyone in that room. I was a failed asset, a bouncing check, a girl whose own father told her to go to Paris and "beg" the man who had just publicly humiliated her. The girl who wanted to be loved died in that mirror. I realized that if I was going to be sold to save a merger, I was going to sell myself to the one who actually controlled the money. I marched past my parents and walked straight into the VIP holding room. I looked the most powerful man in the room—Jameson’s cold, ruthless uncle, Fletcher Holland—dead in the eye and threw the iPad on the table. "Jameson is gone," I said, my voice as hard as stone. "Marry me instead."

I sat on the cold tile floor of our Upper East Side penthouse, staring at the two pink lines until my vision blurred. After ten years of loving Julian Sterling and three years of a hollow marriage, I finally had the one thing that could bridge the distance between us. I was pregnant. But Julian didn't come home with flowers for our anniversary. He tossed a thick manila envelope onto the marble coffee table with a heavy thud. Fiona, the woman he'd truly loved for years, was back in New York, and he told me our "business deal" was officially over. "Sign it," He said, his voice flat and devoid of emotion. He looked at me with the cold detachment of a man selling a piece of unwanted furniture. When I hesitated, he told me to add a zero to the alimony if the money wasn't enough. I realized in that moment that if he knew about the baby, he wouldn't love me; he would simply take my child and give it to Fiona to raise. I shoved the pregnancy test into my pocket, signed the papers with a shaking hand, and lied through my teeth. When my morning sickness hit, I slumped to the floor to hide the truth. "It's just cramps," I gasped, watching him recoil as if I were contagious. To make him stay away, I invented a man named Jack-a fake boyfriend who supposedly gave me the kindness Julian never could. Suddenly, the man who wanted me gone became a monster of possessiveness. He threatened to "bury" a man who didn't exist while leaving me humiliated at his family's dinner to rush to Fiona's side. I was so broken that I even ate a cake I was deathly allergic to, then had to refuse life-saving steroids at the hospital because they would harm the fetus. Julian thinks he's stalling the divorce for two months to protect the family's reputation for his father's Jubilee. He thinks he's keeping his "property" on a short leash until the press dies down. He has no idea I'm using those sixty days to build a fortress for my child. By the time he realizes the truth, I'll be gone, and the Sterling heir will be far beyond his reach.
