Chapter 1 THE BETRAYAL

"Oh my God Jake!, How could you do this to me?"

Erin gasped in stark disbelief, tears streaming down her face as she dropped the customized MacDonald's cup in her hand spilling ice cold coffee on the terrazzo floor. She slowly reversed backwards from the bedroom door and walked slowly like a Zombie towards the balcony, clenching her two hands to her mouth she turned around, walked slowly towards the balcony then leaned on the balcony wall and slowly slid down to sit on the floor, she suddenly bursts out crying. "Where am I supposed to start from? After 5 years of dating, how could Jake do this to me? After all my sacrifices and my contributions to this relationship! The heart of man is wicked."

She took back in her mucus that was supposed to slide down into her mouth and swallowed it. She let out a shrill scream, anyone around her would feel her pain. Jake came out of the balcony with his white briefs and an utterly disorderly buttoned Casablanca shirt. He bent over her. "Babe I'm sorry, it's not what you think it is, I honestly don't know what came over me."

Erin covered her ear and let out a huge scream. "Babe please I'm sorry, I don't even like your friend, I think she drugged me or something." Jake said passively, scratching his head. Erin held her fists tightly to her chest and let out another deafening scream and was panting like a dog that has ran a lot of miles. "Babe please it's not intentional, I said I'm sorry okay?" Jake had started crying now too.

Erin stood up abruptly and marched into the living room, carried a vase pot of flowers, she had gotten it for his 32nd birthday, she lifted it with one hand and marched forward like and angry bulldog into the balcony, she saw Jake staring into the sky, she threw the glass vase at the back of Jake's head. Erin didn't believe she was capable of exhibiting that degree of rage, she picked up his snooker stick or whatever he called it, swung it repeatedly, smashing his TV, pictures of them together hanging on the wall, flower vases and everything that could break. She went downstairs to where his car was, it was definitely her car too because half of her money went into the purchase of the car so he can never sue her for anything, she broke all the windows of the car and marched back into the house still panting and crying.

As she bent down to pick up her bag to leave, she saw her best friend Sara at the Balcony window putting ice on Jake's bleeding head, their body language suggested that they've been intimate for a while now, and their relationship did not start that day. She thought of evil things that she could do to her best friend at that moment but none came to mind, that was the worst day of Erin's Life, losing two people that she loved and trusted on the same day is the worst fate ever!

"I curse you Sara! You will never have a man of your own so far I'm still alive and breathing". Sara looked back and quickly adjusted her position away from Jake "Oh my God, She's still here." Sara whispered to Jake. "I will never ever forgive you Sara, for breaking my heart." She turned, took a last look at Jake's apartment because she was very sure she will never come back there again and ran outside. When she got into her car, she took some tissues, finally blew into it and threw it on the floor of Jake's compound, and zoomed off in her car like a mad dog.

It was evening, the sky went dark, Just like Erin's life. Sara has been hinting at two timing. She had always advised Erin to get a "backup boyfriend" just like all the other girlies that always had a main guy and a side guy, but she wasn't that kind of person and she trusted Jake very much. Apparently Jake was so good at cleaning up his tracks and was pretending to be loyal. He must have been cheating for a long time but Erin was too caught up in her emotions to see it. She definitely sees it now. Everything now made sense. The late nights, sneaky phone calls, the evasive excuses he gave for missed dates and his unavailability on weekends. She saw it all now.

They work in the same company. She considered leaving her job but leaving wasn't an option because she was well paid for the role. She also had her rent to think about. She had a year outstanding rent and was also looking to move to another apartment as good as her current apartment at this current price in New York City. That wasn't going to be easy.

She would have to put her emotions in check and face it like a real woman. Honestly, Erin could say she loved Sara more than she loved Jake. Sara was her best friend since preschool days, they also went to the same high school and university. They were more like sisters, they did everything together and she also got her current role at the company through Erin's help. How Sara managed to start hooking up with Jake was kind of hard for Erin to decipher. She was never going to trust anyone again in her life, she took two weeks off from work so as to get away from the drama. "Hello mum," Erin picked up her phone as her mom is the only friend she had left, "I'm coming to spend a week with you mom". She took a leave from work and went to spend time with her mother at the countryside.

I was once the heiress to the Solomon empire, but after it crumbled, I became the "charity case" ward of the wealthy Hyde family. For years, I lived in their shadows, clinging to the promise that Anson Hyde would always be my protector. That promise shattered when Anson walked into the ballroom with Claudine Chapman on his arm. Claudine was the girl who had spent years making my life a living hell, and now Anson was announcing their engagement to the world. The humiliation was instant. Guests sneered at my cheap dress, and a waiter intentionally sloshed champagne over me, knowing I was a nobody. Anson didn't even look my way; he was too busy whispering possessively to his new fiancée. I was a ghost in my own home, watching my protector celebrate with my tormentor. The betrayal burned. I realized I wasn't a ward; I was a pawn Anson had kept on a shelf until he found a better trade. I had no money, no allies, and a legal trust fund that Anson controlled with a flick of his wrist. Fleeing to the library, I stumbled into Dallas Koch—a titan of industry and my best friend’s father. He was a wall of cold, absolute power that even the Hydes feared. "Marry me," I blurted out, desperate to find a shield Anson couldn't climb. Dallas didn't laugh. He pulled out a marriage agreement and a heavy fountain pen. "Sign," he commanded, his voice a low rumble. "But if you walk out that door with me, you never go back." I signed my name, trading my life for the only man dangerous enough to keep me safe.

I lay paralyzed on stiff white sheets, a prisoner in my own skin, listening to the rain lash against the window like nails on a coffin. My father, Elmore Franco, didn't even look at my face as he checked his clipboard. He just listened to the steady, monotonous beep of the heart monitor-the only thing proving I was still alive. Without a hint of remorse, he pulled a pen from his pocket and signed the Do Not Resuscitate order. My stepmother, Ophelia, stepped out from behind him, wearing my favorite pearl necklace and smelling of cloying perfume. She leaned close to my ear to whisper the truth that turned my blood to ice. "It was the tea, darling. Just like your mother. A slow, tasteless poison." She chuckled as she revealed that my fiancé, Bryce, had a two-year-old son with my sister, Daniela. My inheritance had been funding their secret life for years, and now that the money was secure, I was an inconvenience they were finally scrubbing away. As my father yanked the power cord from the wall, the beeping died, and the darkness swallowed me whole. I was being murdered by my own flesh and blood, used as a bank account until I was no longer needed. I died in that sterile room, drowning in the realization that every person I ever loved was a monster who had been waiting for me to take my last breath. Then, I gasped. I woke up in a luxury hotel suite surrounded by silk sheets, five years in the past-the very morning of my wedding. Next to me lay Basile Delgado, the "Wolf of Wall Street" and my family's most dangerous enemy. In my first life, I ran from this room in a panic and lost everything. This time, I looked at the man who would eventually destroy my father's empire and decided to join him. "I'm not leaving, Basile. Marry me. Right now. Today."

I was sitting in the Presidential Suite of The Pierre, wearing a Vera Wang gown worth more than most people earn in a decade. It was supposed to be the wedding of the century, the final move to merge two of Manhattan's most powerful empires. Then my phone buzzed. It was an Instagram Story from my fiancé, Jameson. He was at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris with a caption that read: "Fuck the chains. Chasing freedom." He hadn't just gotten cold feet; he had abandoned me at the altar to run across the world. My father didn't come in to comfort me. He burst through the door roaring about a lost acquisition deal, telling me the Holland Group would strip our family for parts if the ceremony didn't happen by noon. My stepmother wailed about us becoming the laughingstock of the Upper East Side. The Holland PR director even suggested I fake a "panic attack" to make myself look weak and sympathetic to save their stock price. Then Jameson’s sleazy cousin, Pierce, walked in with a lopsided grin, offering to "step in" and marry me just to get his hands on my assets. I looked at them and realized I wasn't a daughter or a bride to anyone in that room. I was a failed asset, a bouncing check, a girl whose own father told her to go to Paris and "beg" the man who had just publicly humiliated her. The girl who wanted to be loved died in that mirror. I realized that if I was going to be sold to save a merger, I was going to sell myself to the one who actually controlled the money. I marched past my parents and walked straight into the VIP holding room. I looked the most powerful man in the room—Jameson’s cold, ruthless uncle, Fletcher Holland—dead in the eye and threw the iPad on the table. "Jameson is gone," I said, my voice as hard as stone. "Marry me instead."
