Chapter 1 Thought It Was Love

*Michelle's POV

"Jared, where are you?" I asked getting out of bed.

Running into something in front of me, I groaned in pain as I bent down massaging my foot. Since I was blind, I couldn't master the layout of our bedroom no matter how hard I tried. My husband, Jared advised me to take it easy but I was beyond frustrated because I always had to ask for help for everything. I know my husband loved me however, I didn't like being a liability.

" Sarah," I said calling for my caretaker.

Hearing the sound of her running into the room, I took a deep breath trying to calm myself so I wouldn't get angry at her.

" Is there something you need, ma'am?" Sarah asked making me nod my head.

Stretching my hand out, I remained silent hoping that she would understand what I wanted. Sarah was a very good caretaker and she was one of the best in her field. She was one of the few people who understood my needs even without me saying a word.

" Do you want your cane? Here it is." Sarah said placing the stick in my hand immediately.

Heading to shower, I was happy because the bathroom was the one place that I was so sure I had mastered. I could easily reach for anything I wanted and I knew I had to be careful or I'd slip. Once I was done, I came out using my stick to get to the bed where I knew my clothes were going to be.

" Jared. Jared, is that you?" I asked happily after hearing the door open.

Walking out of the room quickly, I headed down the stairs holding onto the rails so I wouldn't fall. The moment I came down, I gasped as I suddenly bumped into my husband.

" Michelle, why are you rushing down the stairs? What if you fall?" Jared asked concerned making me smile.

" Why are you back home so soon? Is something wrong? Did anyone give you a hard time at work?" I asked knowing something was wrong the moment Jared didn't say anything.

Instead, he guided me over to the chair and helped me settle down after taking my cane. I began to feel anxious because I could sense that something was off with Jared. He was unusually quiet and the atmosphere just didn't feel right.

" Jared, I asked you a question. Did someone bully you at the company?" I asked once more.

" What will you do? You and I both come from a poor family, Michelle. Let's get divorced." Jared said making me stunned.

Hearing him stand up, I reached for his hand trying to stop him before I could leave. I really wanted to tell him the truth. That I was not as poor as he imagined me to be. Jared had done his best to take care of me and love me. That was why I had persuaded him to get a job at my company without letting him know it belonged to my family. It was all because of my grandfather's wish for me to find a husband without telling him of my background.

" We can make things work, Jared. I will find a way. Things are going to be alright." I said trying to stop him.

" How? You are blind and I no longer have a job. I won't be able to continue taking care of you. It's time that we go our separate ways. Here are the divorce papers. Sign it." Jared said dropping something on the table.

Although I couldn't see the papers in front of me, tears fell from my eyes as I realized that I was about to leave the man I loved so much. To me, nothing was more important than him. I had to tell him the truth.

" Jared, wait. I have something to tell you. Actually, I am a..." I paused stopping the moment I heard the doorbell ring.

Hearing Jared walk to the door, I sat down for minutes hoping that he would come back. The house was extremely silent but the only thing I could hear was the sound of rain droplets falling outside. A few minutes ticked by and Jared was still not yet back. Getting up from my seat, I stood up trying to go and look for him. I knew it was risky since I didn't have my walking stick but I was so worried that I didn't care at all.

" Jared," I called out as I made my first few steps walking even though I didn't know where I was heading.

Suddenly, I tripped over something falling hard against something. My head started spinning immediately making me close my eyes tightly as I groaned in pain. By the time I opened my eyes again, I gasped in shock as I saw a small light coming into view. Closing my eyes once again, I opened them shocked as I saw the view of my living room. I was super happy and stunned by the realization that I could see. All my life, I had been blind. My grandfather said my mother had given birth to me that way so the doctors said there was no way to fix my eyes.

" Oh my god. Oh my god, Jared." I said standing up happily as I went in search of Jared.

Walking towards the door, I looked around stunned that he wasn't there. I was sure I had heard him go to the door. Feeling anxious and worried, I stepped outside for the first time going to go look for my husband but there he was. Seeing him having sex with a strange woman in his car left me in disbelief and pain. Sobbing hard as I watched them, I couldn't believe that Jared had another woman. Plus she was also rich. I couldn't tell who she was because she was on top of him and her face was hidden. However, her car was super sleek and it was the latest model.

Heading back into the house, I closed the door crying as I finally understood why Jared wanted to divorce me. It wasn't because he had been bullied at the company or that he lost his job. It was because he had found another woman who could help him fulfill his dreams. Walking to the table, I reached for the divorce papers reading it. Jared had not tried to deceive me out of anything because he believed I was poor. Since he wanted a divorce, that was exactly what I did.

I divorced him.

"You're losing a lot of blood," he said without turning around. "I can sense it through the bond. You won't last till a healer comes." "I said I don't need you," I snapped, clutching the coat tighter. The defiance in my words didn't match the weakness in my legs. He exhaled sharply, finally turning to face me. His blue eyes found mine, cold and steady. "You don't have a choice, Avaline." Something about the way he said my name made my pulse skip. He took a slow step forward, closing the space between us with just a few strides. I stepped back, shaking my head. "Stay away from me." His arm wrapped around me, pulling me towards him again. My breath hitched as my chest landed against his. My eyes shot up to meet his defiantly, my chest heaving as anger flared in me. "We'll tear each other apart until one of us breaks. And Avaline... The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.

I was once the heiress to the Solomon empire, but after it crumbled, I became the "charity case" ward of the wealthy Hyde family. For years, I lived in their shadows, clinging to the promise that Anson Hyde would always be my protector. That promise shattered when Anson walked into the ballroom with Claudine Chapman on his arm. Claudine was the girl who had spent years making my life a living hell, and now Anson was announcing their engagement to the world. The humiliation was instant. Guests sneered at my cheap dress, and a waiter intentionally sloshed champagne over me, knowing I was a nobody. Anson didn't even look my way; he was too busy whispering possessively to his new fiancée. I was a ghost in my own home, watching my protector celebrate with my tormentor. The betrayal burned. I realized I wasn't a ward; I was a pawn Anson had kept on a shelf until he found a better trade. I had no money, no allies, and a legal trust fund that Anson controlled with a flick of his wrist. Fleeing to the library, I stumbled into Dallas Koch—a titan of industry and my best friend’s father. He was a wall of cold, absolute power that even the Hydes feared. "Marry me," I blurted out, desperate to find a shield Anson couldn't climb. Dallas didn't laugh. He pulled out a marriage agreement and a heavy fountain pen. "Sign," he commanded, his voice a low rumble. "But if you walk out that door with me, you never go back." I signed my name, trading my life for the only man dangerous enough to keep me safe.

Today is October 14th, my birthday. I returned to New York after months away, dragging my suitcase through the biting wind, but the VIP pickup zone where my husband’s Maybach usually idled was empty. When I finally let myself into our Upper East Side penthouse, I didn’t find a cake or a "welcome home" banner. Instead, I found my husband, Caden, kneeling on the floor, helping our five-year-old daughter wrap a massive gift for my half-sister, Adalynn. Caden didn’t even look up when I walked in; he was too busy laughing with the girl who had already stolen my father’s legacy and was now moving in on my family. "Auntie Addie is a million times better than Mommy," my daughter Elara chirped, clutching a plush toy Caden had once forbidden me from buying for her. "Mommy is mean," she whispered loudly, while Caden just smirked, calling me a "drill sergeant" before whisking her off to Adalynn’s party without a second glance. Later that night, I saw a video Adalynn posted online where my husband and child laughed while mocking my "sensitive" nature, treating me like an inconvenient ghost in my own home. I had spent five years researching nutrition for Elara’s health and managing every detail of Caden’s empire, only to be discarded the moment I wasn't in the room. How could the man who set his safe combination to my birthday completely forget I even existed? The realization didn't break me; it turned me into ice. I didn't scream or beg for an explanation. I simply walked into the study, pulled out the divorce papers I’d drafted months ago, and took a black marker to the terms. I crossed out the alimony, the mansion, and even the custody clause—if they wanted a life without me, I would give them exactly what they asked for. I left my four-carat diamond ring on the console table and walked out into the rain with nothing but a heavily encrypted hard drive. The submissive Mrs. Holloway was gone, and "Ghost," the most lethal architect in the tech world, was finally back online to take back everything they thought I’d forgotten.
