Chapter 1

Chapter 1

To see Phil one last time, I gave up my Demon Spirit.

After enduring countless hardships, I finally met him.

The first thing he said to me was, "Get out!"

Not long after, I transcended the mortal world and became an immortal.

But he, unable to love me, was trapped in place.

I advised him to let go of his obsession.

[1]

I am a fox demoness who has undergone a thousand years of spiritual training.

I searched for Phil for five hundred years, but he avoided me.

However, my days are numbered. To see Phil one last time, I crossed Flame Mountain and Ice Blade, and finally found the god who roamed outside the Three Realms: Nolan!

"Why can't I find Phil?" Nolan, dressed in a long purple robe, stood atop the icy peak, smiling slightly as if he had anticipated my arrival.

"He has the Lapis Mirror, which can hide his presence within the Three Realms."

"Can you help me?"

"Hahaha, how amusing. Since you came to me, you must have known I have the power to help you. I am not bound by the Three Realms; what can a mere Lapis Mirror do to me?" He floated down from the icy peak, his purple robe fluttering. He took out a black fan and lifted my chin.

"But what can you offer me?"

Despite my thousand years of spiritual training and unparalleled beauty, I was battered and exhausted from crossing Flame Mountain and Ice Blade. At this moment, I was kneeling at his feet, probably worthless in his eyes.

"You can take my life!" A few days ago, I was attacked by a spider spirit. I managed to defeat her with my cultivation, but with her last breath, she released her venom.

I didn't have long to live, maybe another hundred years. I just wanted to see Phil one last time. There were too many misunderstandings between us. I just wanted to see him again and explain the truth from back then.

Nolan laughed again, "What use is your life to me?" He leaned down to look at me. "I'm only interested in one thing."

"What? As long as I can do it, I will get it for you!"

"Love! The love that exists in all realms. I want to know if human love can pass my test. If you love Phil, then give me your Demon Spirit."

"Alright, I agree!"

"Hahaha, I don't need your Demon Spirit. Let's make a bet!"

His eyes were full of mockery. "I will let you find your beloved, but once you find him, you cannot explain the misunderstandings from back then unless he asks you. You cannot tell him you are poisoned, and you cannot tell him you are making a bet with me. If he sees your love for him, forgives you, and falls in love with you again within a year, I will return your Demon Spirit and remove the spider venom. Do you agree?"

This god outside the Three Realms wanted to amuse himself with me, to play games with the mortal world through me. The conditions he offered were so tempting, how could I refuse?

"I agree! What if he doesn't love me?"

"Then you will be shattered into pieces, your form and spirit destroyed, disappearing forever."

I spat out my Demon Spirit. "Deal!"

He gave me his fan, the Abyssal Bone Fan, which could protect me, temporarily delay the poison, and provide me with a continuous supply of spirit power since I no longer had my Demon Spirit.

I was too happy too soon, thinking that meeting Nolan was my opportunity. Not only did he help me see Phil again, but he also gave me hope to continue living. Little did I know that seeing Phil again was the beginning of my nightmare...

The next time I saw Phil was at the Mountain of Illusions.

I attended a grand assembly in the Demon Realm, mingling among the bustling crowd of demons.

He sat on the Demon King's throne, looking majestic, with a look of pride on his face.

Gone was the spirited youth from back then. Five hundred years had passed, and he had become the king of the Demon Realm.

He was a wolf demon and possessed the mystical Lapis Mirror. Everything seemed to fall into place; it was his destiny.

Finally, you and I met here.

I recalled our first meeting five hundred years ago, in the eye of a formation. He was trapped by a Taoist priest's formation, unable to move. He couldn't match my five hundred years of cultivation.

In the formation, he was in excruciating pain. When he saw me passing by, hope flashed in his eyes. "Fox Immortal sister! Save me."

I looked at this wolf demon with only three hundred years of cultivation with amusement. "Oh, save you? What benefit can I get?"

"My father is the Demon King. Our home has many rare treasures."

I teased, "You look good. How about I take you as my husband?"

He was so anxious that he was sweating profusely. "Alright, I agree. If you save me, I will do as you say."

A small formation was naturally no challenge for me. I didn't intend to marry a wolf demon; I was just teasing him.

But unexpectedly, the formation was strong on the inside and weak on the outside. To save him, I expended a lot of energy and even lost a tail.

From then on, my nine tails became eight. I was injured and needed someone by my side. He took my joke seriously and stayed by my side, tending to my wounds and finding food for me, being caring and thoughtful, like a devoted husband.

I didn't think much of it. But when I recovered, I couldn't get rid of him.

He held my hand. "Why do you want to drive me away, my lady? Is it because I'm not doing well enough?"

The drug pulsed through my veins, every inch of my body screaming for release, yet my husband, Ethan, stood over me, his face etched with familiar disgust. Just thirty minutes earlier, his childhood sweetheart, Scarlett, had forced 99 pills down my throat, challenging me: if Ethan was still repulsed by my 200-pound body, even under the aphrodisiac's influence, I had to sign the divorce papers. Scarlett' s taunt echoed: "I bet even if you strip naked and beg like a dog, he won't touch your two-hundred-pound body!" Consumed by the drug, I sank to the floor, pressing my lips against Ethan' s polished shoes, begging for help, for the man who once swore to protect me. He commanded, cold and devoid of emotion: "Use your mouth. Unbuckle my belt." He promised to help if I complied. My heart, already shattered, splintered as I fumbled with his belt, a memory piercing through the haze: I had endured agonizing experimental treatments, nearly dying, to cure the rare disease that was killing him. He had vowed eternal gratitude, promised to cherish me forever. But the cure had ravaged my metabolism, ballooning my body and his affection dwindled just as fast. Then, his sneer: "You really think I'd touch this? You' re disgusting. Trying to manipulate me with drugs? You' re pathetic." He kicked me away, walking out, leaving me to burn while Scarlett posted a triumphant selfie with him: "He's mine. Alone." I was just a placeholder, a life-saving tool that had outlived its usefulness. The fire inside raged, but a chilling resolve hardened. I wouldn't die here. A numb voice whispered: "I will erase Ava Miller, the hopeful artist, the loving wife, the pathetic, two-hundred-pound woman begging on the floor. I will leave this life behind and become someone else. Someone powerful."

I woke up on silk sheets that smelled of expensive cedar and cold sandalwood, a world away from my cramped apartment in Brooklyn. Beside me lay Ezra Gardner—my boss, the billionaire CEO of Gardner Holdings, and the man who could end my career with a snap of his fingers. He didn’t offer an apology for the night before; instead, he looked at me with terrifying clarity and proposed a cold, calculated business arrangement. "Marriage. It stabilizes the board and solves the PR crisis before it begins." He dressed me in archival Chanel and sent me home in his Maybach, but my life was already falling apart. My boyfriend, Irving, claimed he had passed out early, yet his location data placed him at my best friend’s apartment until three in the morning. When I tried to run, I realized Ezra was already ten steps ahead, tracking my movements and uncovering the secret I’d spent twenty years hiding: my connection to the powerful Senator Grimes. I was trapped between a CEO who treated me like a line item on a quarterly report and a boyfriend who had been using me while sleeping with my closest friend. I felt like a pawn in a game I didn't understand, wondering why a man like Ezra would walk up forty flights of stairs on a broken leg just to make sure I was safe. "Showtime, Mrs. Gardner." Standing on the red carpet in a gown that cost more than my life, I watched my cheating ex-boyfriend’s face turn pale as Ezra claimed me in front of the world. I wasn't just an assistant anymore; I was a weapon, and it was time to burn their world down.

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.
