The Mafia's Pawn Chapter 1 A DAY OF JOY

Cleo's POV

"And now, shall we all rise to our feet as we present the valedictorian award to none other person than..," the Mc instructed, and we all rose to our feet.

"Who do you think it'll be?" Amelia asked.

"I don't..." I started only to be cut off by the MC.

"Cleo Benson," he announced, his voice cutting through the tensed air of the hall.

The crowd erupted in applause and gasps, filling the room with a vibrant energy. I looked around in shock as the sound of my name seemed to echo in the hall.

My heart stopped as I stared into nothing, I staggered and sank into my chair, my hand gripping the edge of my seat.

Were they cheering for me? Or was there another Cleo Benson I wasn't aware of?

"Go, Cleo!" Amelia shouted, her voice rising above the others. "You've got this!"

It took a while for me to accept reality, but the cheers didn't stop. I was urged to come up stage, so I confidently rose to my feet and raised my gown slightly to avoid tripping, my hands trembling as I carefully walked up to the podium. I had already received four departmental awards, and to think I would receive the Valedictorian award was a dream I dared not dream.

As I stared into the sea of over two hundred graduates standing in the hall, their smiles and cheers filled me with overwhelming emotion. Tears welled up in my eyes.

"I...I didn't know if I truly deserved this award," I began, my voice thick with emotion, silencing their cheers. "But if I was chosen among all of you incredible students, then...I guess I must have."

A tear rolled down my cheek, and I quickly wiped it away. "This," I continued, holding up the award, "this is for all the sleepless nights, the sacrifices, the challenges we've all faced. I want to thank the board, the authorities, our lecturers...and I dedicate this award to every single one of my fellow students."

As I spoke, I noticed a ripple of surprise pass through the crowd. Confused, I wondered if my vision was blurred by the tears. People were pulling out their phones, recording videos, and taking pictures. Suddenly, the thought of being the center of attention, especially on social media, made me feel anxious. I instinctively turned to hide my face.

And that's when I saw him.

Miley, my boyfriend, was kneeling on one knee with a white bouquet in one hand and a small box in the other.

My heart skipped a beat.

"Cleo," he said, his voice steady despite the tremor of nerves I could see in his eyes. "Will you please marry me?"

I stared at him in shock and disbelief. Miley had been oddly quiet today; his usual easy smile was replaced with a tension I couldn't quite place. I'd caught him glancing at me several times during the ceremony, his fingers drumming nervously on the armrest. I dismissed it as pre-graduation jitters, but now, standing here, it all became clear to me.

A chorus from the crowd jilted me back from my thoughts. "Say yes! Say yes!"

Our relationship wasn't exactly a secret, everyone knew we had been together since our first year. But I hadn't expected this, not today, not in front of everyone.

Tears of joy filled my eyes again as I whispered, "Yes, Miley, I will."

He slid the ring onto my finger, and I threw my arms around him, the room erupting in cheers once more.

As the ceremony concluded and students began to file out of the hall, I lingered for a moment still rooted to the spot, admiring the glittering stone on the ring. Suddenly, I felt Amelia's on my shoulder grinding me.

"I can't believe this is real," I murmured, half to myself.

"You deserve all of this, Cleo," Amelia said softly, pulling me into a hug. "I'm so proud of you. I'm sure your parents would be too. Speaking of which, are they here yet?"

"That's true. Hold this for me," I said shoving the awards in her hand. "Let me put a call through to them."

I moved to a quiet corner, away from the noise and excitement. Dialing my mom's number, I felt a slight twinge of anxiety. The phone rang twice before she picked up.

"Mom, where are you guys? The ceremony's over and the party is starting in ten minutes"

"We're on our way, sweetie," she assured me. "Just a bit of traffic. We'll be there soon."

Relieved, I hung up and joined the party outside the hall. My friends swarmed me, all eager to see the ring. "Look at that rock!" Emily exclaimed, grabbing my hand.

"You're the newest bride-to-be!" Lucy teased, nudging me playfully. "Can I be the chief bride's maid instead of Amelia?"

I laughed, holding up my hand so they could get a better look. Across the lawn, I saw Miley surrounded by his friends, who were no doubt teasing him as well. Our eyes met, and we smiled at each other, the shared moment grounding me amid all the excitement.

Just then, my phone rang. I excused myself, expecting to hear my mother's voice again.

But it wasn't my mother. A man's voice came through the line, calm but with an edge that made my heart sink. "Hello, is this Cleo Benson?"

The rain in Detroit was slick with grime when my family finally came to fetch me. They didn't want a reunion; they wanted a sacrificial lamb to marry into the Kaufman empire to save their failing business. I thought I was just being sold off, but the limo ride ended under a dark overpass where six hired thugs were waiting with chains. My own sister had ordered them to "break my spirit" so I’d be a shaking, pathetic mess by the time I reached the altar. They called me "Detroit trash" and sprayed air freshener when I sat on their leather seats. My stepmother wanted a video of me begging for my life, and my father was ready to trade me like a used car to a man everyone called a "vegetable." They expected a submissive country girl, unaware that I was a high-level "cleaner" who could snap a radius bone before they could even scream. When I finally reached the Kaufman estate, I found my fiancĆ©, Barron, slumped in a wheelchair, drooling and silent. But as soon as the doors closed, the "invalid" grabbed my wrist with a grip of iron and whispered a command that changed everything. I didn't understand why my own blood was so desperate to see me destroyed. What had I ever done to deserve a hit squad and a forced marriage to a man they thought was a corpse? But Barron isn't a vegetable, and I'm not a victim. We just touched down at the Moon family gala in a matte-black helicopter, and as the doors slide open, the "broken" bride is about to show them exactly what happens when you throw away the wrong daughter. "If we're going to crash a party," Barron whispered, his eyes burning with lethal clarity, "we should make an entrance."

Six years ago, I was a naive girl sold by my father to the powerful Sanders estate, only to be tossed onto the streets after a brutal assault they labeled "marital infidelity." I fled the country pregnant and broken, hiding from the shadow of a husband I had never even met. Now, I’ve returned to New York with my triplets to sign the final divorce papers and disappear forever. But Archibald Sanders—the man I was told was a crippled recluse—intercepted us with the cold precision of a predator. He didn't see the woman his family destroyed; he saw a gold-digger who had shamed his name. His security team hunted us to a grimy motel, using tactical force to snatch my children away and drag me to his glass-walled empire. In his office, he loomed over me, demanding a DNA test and threatening to throw me in prison while my babies were lost to the foster system. He was convinced I’d cheated, yet he stared at my sons with a haunting confusion, unable to ignore the stormy blue eyes that were a perfect mirror of his own. I stood there, paralyzed by his scent—the sharp tang of rain and expensive leather that triggered the icy dread of my worst nightmares. How could he accuse me of betrayal when he felt exactly like the monster who had shattered my life in that dark hotel room? "I'll sign anything," I sobbed, "just give me my kids." But the game changed when my five-year-old son hacked the tower’s security, holding the skyscraper hostage to save me. In the chaos, a fragile, silent boy—Archibald’s secret son—wandered into the room and reached for me as if I were his missing soul. Archibald’s face turned to stone as he tore up the agreement and locked the doors. "Until I find out why my son is looking at you like that," he growled, "you aren't going anywhere."

I arrived at the hotel with Julian's favorite takeout, ready to surprise my fiancƩ before our big merger. But the moment I swiped the keycard, the silence of the hallway felt heavy and wrong. Inside, a red-soled stiletto lay on the marble floor-the same one I'd watched my best friend Lila try on at Saks last week. Through the cracked bedroom door, I watched Julian's back arch as Lila looked me straight in the eye and smiled, wrapping her legs tighter around him to mock my heartbreak. I fled to the penthouse to hide, only to find Grafton, Julian's "crippled" brother, waiting in the dark. To my horror, the man who was supposed to be paralyzed stood up from his wheelchair, gripped my chin with cold fingers, and forced me to sign a contract that gave him control of my family's shares. He knew about my mother's secret medical bills and used them to buy my silence, effectively turning my life into a calculated game of corporate chess. The betrayal tasted like acid, and the injustice of it all burned in my throat. My fiancƩ was a liar, my best friend was a thief, and the man now controlling my fate was a predator who had been faking his disability for years. I couldn't understand how everyone I trusted had turned out to be a monster. I was trapped between a man who cheated on me and a man who wanted to own me, with no way out and no one to turn to. But when Julian came looking for me, Grafton didn't hide; he stood tall, looming over me with a possessive glint in his eyes. "Help me destroy Julian," I rasped, realizing that to survive the Faulkner men, I had to become the most dangerous player of them all.
