Camilla's POV
As I sat on the edge of the bed, clutching the pregnancy test in my trembling hands, I couldn't help but smile at the two bright lines staring back at me. This little stick held the promise of a future I had only ever dreamed of, a future with Lawrence, my husband, the man I had grown to love beyond the bounds of our contract marriage. Imagining the joy on his face when I would share this news with him filled me with warmth and excitement.
The memory of when I first met Lawrence Knights always stuck with me. It was one of those moments you can't forget.
We were introduced through my Best friend, Jane who knew Lawrence from their days at high school. From what she told me and what I had gathered, Lawrence was a wealthy businessman with a penchant for philanthropy, but beyond that, I knew little else about him.
We met at this fancy restaurant in LA, and I was so nervous. He was this tall, good-looking guy with these blue eyes that just seemed to see everything.
Our eyes met across the crowded room, and a spark of recognition passed between us. I felt my cheeks flush with heat as Lawrence made his way over to where I was standing.
"Camilla, I presume?" he said, extending his hand with a charming smile that sent butterflies fluttering in my stomach.
"Yes, that's me" I replied, trying to steady my trembling voice as I shook his hand. "And you must be Lawrence."
He nodded in affirmation. His smile widened as he gestured for me to take a seat at the table he had reserved for us. As we settled into our chairs, a waiter appeared seemingly out of nowhere, ready to take our drink orders.
As we enjoyed our wine and delicious food, Lawrence and I chatted for hours. We found that we had a lot in common and shared similar interests. The conversation just seemed to flow naturally between us, like we'd known each other for ages. By the time dessert arrived, I felt like I had known him for years rather than mere hours.
And then, as the evening drew to a close, Lawrence broached the subject that had been lingering in the back of my mind since our first introduction.
"I have a proposition for you, Camilla," He spoke seriously, but there was a bit of doubt in his voice.
I raised an eyebrow, curious about what he had to say.
"Oh? What kind of proposition?" Lawrence took a deep breath. His eyes locked with mine in a gaze that was both intense and searching.
"I need you to be my wife" he said bluntly, and his words lingered between us feeling heavy.
I blinked in surprise, unsure of how to respond to his unexpected request.
"Your wife? But we've only just met," I protested with my mind racing with a whirlwind of mixed feelings.
Lawrence nodded, with a wistful smile playing at the corners of his lips. "I know it sounds crazy, but hear me out," he urged, leaning forward earnestly.
"I'm in the middle of a rather... delicate situation, and having a wife by my side would help to quell the rumors and speculation surrounding my personal life." I frowned, trying to wrap my head around his proposal.
"So, you want me to enter into a fake marriage with you?" I asked incredulously, wanting to be sure. Lawrence nodded again.
"Yes, that's the gist of it. I understand if you're not comfortable with the idea, but I would compensate you generously for your time and cooperation." I hesitated.
Just like Lawrence said, I was not okay with that idea, entering a fake marriage appeared to be a waste of time, even at that stage of my life But then, when I looked into Lawrence's eyes and saw that he was feeling scared inside even though he seemed strong on the outside, I realized I couldn't just leave him alone-especially when he needed someone to support him the most.
And then, feeling determined like I had made up my mind, I reached out and clasped Lawrence's hand in mine.
"I'll do it," I said, my voice steady and sure.
"I'll be your wife."
*
It was like I was dragged out of my memory to the present as the door burst open revealing Lawrence who stormed into the room with an expression twisted with rage. He tossed an envelope in my direction, and as it landed at my feet, several photos spilled out, scattering across the floor like shards of betrayal.
My heart plummeted as I took in the images.
It was me and Clinton, my ex, captured in moments that could easily be misconstrued as something they weren't.
I saw myself on the bed with Clinton, and though our position was not grievous, still it was not bearable at Lawrence's sight.
I looked at Lawrence and his face wore an accusation that could cut through the air like a knife, and I felt it piercing through my soul.
"It's not what it looks like Lawrence, I didn't cheat on you. "I protested even though my voice trembled with a mixture of fear and desperation. But he wouldn't listen, his anger fueling his disbelief.
"Don't lie to me, Camile. You said you were with your sister that night," he countered, his voice laced with accusation.
"Is this your sister with you on the bed?"
I closed my eyes, willing myself to calm down as I recounted the events of that fateful evening. I was supposed to meet my sister at a club and get to spend the night with her but she didn't show up. When I was about to leave, Clinton showed up and I couldn't turn him down when he begged we have a bottle of drink- our relationship never ended on bad terms.
"We had a drink, and then... I don't remember much after that. But I swear nothing happened between us." I explained, my words tumbling out in a rush.
Lawrence's expression softened momentarily, but the doubt still lingered in his eyes as he handed me a pile of papers.
"I wanted to make you my forever wife, Camilla. But you've shattered that dream with your betrayal," his voice sounded with disappointment.
Tears welled up in my eyes as I reached out to take the papers. My heart fell as I realized it was a divorce paper. "Please, Lawrence, you have to believe me," I pleaded, but he had already turned away.
As he walked out the door, leaving me alone with my shattered dreams, I crumpled to the floor allowing the weight of his accusations to crush me. And in that moment the reality of our crumbling marriage sunk in. It dawned on me that I had lost the one person I had ever truly loved.
The chaos really didn't allow me to talk about the good news I just received. But on second thought, telling him about my pregnancy will escalate things. He could say he wasn't responsible, that Clinton was.
Hours passed in a blur of pain and confusion as I packed my belongings. The echoes of Lawrence's accusations still kept ringing in my ears, causing an uncontrollable tear. I already made a call to my best friend Jane, who wasn't sure what happened over the phone.
A few minutes later, she arrived and I explained things to her hoping for comfort and understanding, perhaps as friends with Lawrence, she would talk to him for me but instead, Jane lashed out at me, accusing me of betraying Lawrence.
Her words hit me like a sledgehammer, leaving me speechless and reeling from the shock of her accusations. I couldn't believe that my best friend would think so poorly of me, especially in such a vulnerable moment.
Tears welled up in my eyes as I struggled to find the right words to defend myself.
"Jane, please, you have to believe me," I pleaded, my voice trembling with emotion.
"I would never do anything to hurt Lawrence. He means everything to me."
But Jane's expression remained cold and unforgiving as she continued to berate me disgustingly. Her words were like a dagger stabbing into my already wounded heart.
I wondered why she couldn't believe me. Questions swayed across my head but there was no answer.
As she stormed out of the room, I couldn't help but feel a profound sense of betrayal, both by Lawrence and by the best friend I had trusted implicitly.
With a heavy heart, I gathered my belongings and prepared to leave the house, perhaps to a new city, a city without Lawrence and Jane.
Thirty minutes later, I was at the bus station, ready to embark on a journey to an uncertain future, with my unborn kid when suddenly I remembered something. I had forgotten an important document back at Lawrence's house, a document that I couldn't afford to leave behind.
With a heavy heart, I turned back with my footsteps heavy with resignation as I retraced my path to the place that had once been my home. But as I entered the bedroom, what I saw stopped me dead in my tracks.
