Source: When Howard was kissing his secretary, I handed him a room card. His brothers cheered, "Sister-in-law has great poise." Howard gave a sarcastic look and said, "Chu Yu, you've become so understanding." I left calmly. Just as I closed the door, Song Ran called, sounding aggrieved. "You gave him the room card, so what about us?" I gently reassured him, "He just mentioned that the Cullinan has a starlight ceiling; let's give it a try tonight." Target:

Chapter 1

Tobias was kissing his secretary when I handed him a room card.

His friends started teasing, "Wow, she's really cool about this."

Tobias looked at me with a mocking gaze, "Jillian, you've grown up."

I walked away calmly.

Just as I closed the door, Ayden called, sounding pitiful.

"You gave him the room card, what about us?"

I coaxed him softly, "He just mentioned the Blue Lightning car with the starry roof. Let's try it tonight."

It was a friend's birthday, and Tobias, along with his group of friends, had secretly gone without telling me.

His alluring secretary was there too.

"Ms. Reynolds must have quite the influence to get Tobias to come over."

"The birthday boy is Kacie's brother, isn't it practically a family gathering?"

"Good thing she's not here, or she'd be really upset..."

Everyone in our circle knew I liked Tobias. I had been chasing him for twelve years, watching him date countless women while he ignored me.

Yet, our families had an engagement agreement.

Tobias probably wanted to avoid complications, so he deliberately didn't tell me he was coming here.

But as luck would have it, I was nearby, and a well-meaning friend spotted me and mischievously dragged me in to say hello.

As soon as I entered, I saw Kacie sitting on Tobias's lap, kissing him repeatedly like a playful bird.

Tobias leaned lazily against the chair, one hand in his pocket, the other loosely around her waist, looking carefree and flirtatious.

Kacie's brother, Vernon, saw me and approached quickly, as if facing a great enemy, to stop me.

"What are you doing here?

I didn't invite you."

Tobias's friends looked on, eager for drama.

"I told you, wherever Tobias is, she'll always find him."

"She's the family's eldest daughter, yet she doesn't care about appearances at all."

"What eldest daughter? Everyone knows she's just an adopted child..."

Tobias tapped the table impatiently, and the room fell silent.

I smiled at the wary Vernon, "Don't worry, I'm just here to deliver something."

Then I pushed past him and walked up to Tobias.

Kacie hesitated, but since Tobias didn't say anything, she remained seated on his lap, looking at me defiantly.

Tobias took a sip from his wine glass, "What are you doing here?"

I smiled calmly, "Mr. Howard, you know the answer to that."

He knew very well that neither of us should be here.

Today, my parents had invited him over for dinner to discuss our wedding plans.

Yet, he deliberately stood them up to attend this birthday party with Kacie.

Now, he only slightly frowned, "I had something to do today. I'll visit your parents next time. I'm sure they'll understand."

Yes, they wouldn't dare not to understand.

They would just take their anger out on me instead.

"Jillian, we're not kids anymore. Stop being so willful."

"In the future, I don't want you following me around. It bothers me."

"As for the wedding, wait for my notice."

I interrupted him, "Tobias."

He sighed, lowering his voice, "Jillian, be reasonable."

"Don't make me cause a scene."

I smiled, taking a card from my bag and handing it to him.

"I'm just here to give you something."

He looked at the hotel room card in his hand, his face darkening.

"What does this mean?" I brushed my hair aside, "It means nothing. Enjoy yourself."

"As for the wedding, let's not mention it again."

He paused, letting out a sarcastic laugh, "You want to call off the engagement?"

I shook my head, "Tobias, I never agreed to the engagement."

Because no one ever asked my opinion, no one thought I would refuse the man I had loved for so many years.

I used to think so too.

But now, I looked at him sincerely, "From now on, I won't bother you anymore. You're free."

With that, I took out the jade bracelet his mother had given me during our engagement and returned it to him.

He looked at it playfully for a moment, then laughed mockingly.

"Jillian, you've learned to play games."

"This bracelet isn't worth much, nor is it a family heirloom."

"If you don't want it, just throw it away."

I was stunned for a moment, then understood.

His mother never thought highly of me, just gave me a random bracelet to brush me off.

And I, like a fool, treasured it for so long, never daring to wear it.

I shook my head in self-mockery.

Tobias thought I was regretting it and was about to make a sarcastic remark.

I flicked my wrist, and the bracelet flew straight into the trash can.

"Now, we're even."

The passcode to Conrad Ellison' s private villa was my birthday, a gesture I once thought was the most romantic in the world. Now, it felt like a key to a gilded cage. I walked through his silent mansion, a cold knot of unease growing in my stomach. Then I heard it-a low moan from his bedroom. The door was ajar, revealing Conrad on his knees, clutching a lavender silk scarf. He was touching himself, breathing one name: "Kassidy." My stepsister. My blood ran cold. The man I loved, the man I thought was pure, desired her, not me. As I stumbled back, his phone buzzed. It was Kassidy. "Conrad? You sound... out of breath." He snapped, "What do you want?" She asked if the rumors of our marriage were true. His reply hit me like a physical blow: "Never. She' s a delusional, pathetic woman. I wish she would just disappear." He admitted he only tolerated me to get closer to her, to win her father' s approval. My three years of foolish love felt like a giant, humiliating joke. I remembered how my father brought Kassidy and her mother home after my mother' s funeral, how they made me a villain, and how Conrad, my supposed savior, had stepped in to protect me from bullies. I had been so blind, so stupidly arrogant, believing I was special to him. He wasn't a saint; he was just obsessed with the wrong woman. I ran until my lungs burned, collapsing on the lawn. A hard, sharp resolve formed in the wreckage of my heart. I called Helene, my voice torn with sobs. "I'm done. I don't want him anymore." I was leaving this city, my father, Kassidy, all of it. I was starting over. I was never coming back.

The sweet scent of vanilla filled our kitchen, a fragile peace before the storm of Lily' s fifth birthday. Then, my husband Mark's phone buzzed with the name "Scarlett," shattering any illusion of our perfect life. Later, I found receipts for a diamond necklace and private school tuition-all for Scarlett' s daughter, not our own. My husband stood by, watching as his mistress' s daughter, Daisy, taunted Lily, proudly displaying gifts from her "Daddy." That night, a news alert flashed across my phone: "Tech Mogul Mark Davis Rekindles Romance with Childhood Sweetheart Scarlett Vance? Seen on a Cozy Family Outing with Vance and Her Look-alike Daughter, Daisy." He walked in at 2 a.m., oblivious to the wreckage he' d left in his wake. "How was your party, Mark?" I asked, holding up the damning picture. He denied nothing, offering flimsy excuses about "responsibility" and "old times' sake." But when I found out he was paying for Daisy' s schooling, my control snapped. "What do you want, Ava? A divorce?" he challenged. "Yes," I said, the word tasting like ash in my mouth. He panicked, pleading for a second chance, weaving a tale of blackmail. "Prove it," I told him, demanding a postnup: if he strayed again, I' d take everything. He signed, thinking he' d bought my silence. But at his company picnic, Scarlett and Daisy appeared, Mark' s secret family in plain sight. He spoke French to Daisy, a warmth he never showed Lily, making our daughter an outsider. "It is incredibly rude to speak in a language you assume others don\'t understand, Scarlett. Especially when you are telling your daughter to boast about things a married man supposedly did with you," I said in flawless French, exposing their cruel charade. His anger, however, was for me and our crying daughter. "You\'re making a scene!" he hissed. "And Lily, for God\'s sake, stop crying. It\'s embarrassing." That was the end. I walked away, Lily' s hand in mine, knowing he had made his choice.

His Stolen Wedding, Her Perfect Lie

My wedding day was supposed to be perfect, just like Chloe and I planned it. White roses, fairy lights, and then I saw it: a giant photo of Chloe and her "best friend" Mark at the entrance, with "Congratulations Chloe & Mark" written beneath. I thought it was a terrible prank, but a hulking man blocked my way, laughing when I said I was the groom. "The groom' s name is Mark. Now get lost before you make a scene," he grunted. My heart pounded as I pushed past him, only to see Chloe on stage in her wedding dress, Mark' s arm possessively around her. "Thank you all for coming to celebrate the happiest day of our lives," Mark announced, as my mind went blank. I shouted Chloe' s name, and for a second, I saw panic in her eyes before it was replaced by cold annoyance. Mark smirked, pointing out a "wedding crasher" as his brother, Dale, stomped towards me, snarling about me getting lost. "This is a misunderstanding! I' m Alex! I' m engaged to Chloe! We were supposed to get married today!" I cried, looking desperately at Chloe, but she wouldn' t meet my gaze. Mark called me a "stalker," and Dale punched me in the stomach, then dragged me out, breaking my arm. I lay on the cold concrete steps, the pain nothing compared to the crushing weight in my chest. Just hours earlier, Chloe had woken me, worried she was pregnant, sending me on a wild goose chase for a test across town. She had kissed me, telling me she loved me. It was all a lie. She had stolen our wedding, our friends, and our life. My phone buzzed, a picture of Chloe and Mark, blissful in a hotel room, a smug message from him: "Thanks for setting everything up, buddy. She' s all mine now." Rage burned through me. I called, needing her to confirm the betrayal. "Things change. People change. I chose Mark. He can give me the life I deserve," she said dismissively. I realized then: I was just a placeholder. The entire five years was a lie. The devastating truth wasn' t just about a wedding lost, but a life stolen. I moved out, blocking her everywhere. It was over. But it wasn' t just about moving on. It was about reclaiming everything she tried to erase.

I sat on the cold tile floor of our Upper East Side penthouse, staring at the two pink lines until my vision blurred. After ten years of loving Julian Sterling and three years of a hollow marriage, I finally had the one thing that could bridge the distance between us. I was pregnant. But Julian didn't come home with flowers for our anniversary. He tossed a thick manila envelope onto the marble coffee table with a heavy thud. Fiona, the woman he'd truly loved for years, was back in New York, and he told me our "business deal" was officially over. "Sign it," He said, his voice flat and devoid of emotion. He looked at me with the cold detachment of a man selling a piece of unwanted furniture. When I hesitated, he told me to add a zero to the alimony if the money wasn't enough. I realized in that moment that if he knew about the baby, he wouldn't love me; he would simply take my child and give it to Fiona to raise. I shoved the pregnancy test into my pocket, signed the papers with a shaking hand, and lied through my teeth. When my morning sickness hit, I slumped to the floor to hide the truth. "It's just cramps," I gasped, watching him recoil as if I were contagious. To make him stay away, I invented a man named Jack-a fake boyfriend who supposedly gave me the kindness Julian never could. Suddenly, the man who wanted me gone became a monster of possessiveness. He threatened to "bury" a man who didn't exist while leaving me humiliated at his family's dinner to rush to Fiona's side. I was so broken that I even ate a cake I was deathly allergic to, then had to refuse life-saving steroids at the hospital because they would harm the fetus. Julian thinks he's stalling the divorce for two months to protect the family's reputation for his father's Jubilee. He thinks he's keeping his "property" on a short leash until the press dies down. He has no idea I'm using those sixty days to build a fortress for my child. By the time he realizes the truth, I'll be gone, and the Sterling heir will be far beyond his reach.
