Will Lucas lose everything he values because of his secret longing, or can he show that his love is worth the risk?
Sophie Bennett stepped out of the taxi and gazed up at New York City's magnificent skyline. The buzz of ambition and limitless potential filled the air, making it electrifying. She had grown up in this city, where she had dreamed of a life much better than the one she had experienced. She had been studying overseas and pursuing her love of painting for five years when she returned.
Sophie, both excited and frightened, inhaled deeply as she clutched her portfolio against her chest. The city of New York has changed since she left. It all seemed brighter, faster, and larger. Both she and the world had moved on. The sound of cabs blaring muffled her voice as she mumbled to herself, "Welcome back, Sophie." and the chatter of passersby.
James, her brother, had insisted on hosting a welcome-back dinner at one of the most exclusive restaurants in the city. At first, Sophie was apprehensive because James's ideal of a laid-back meal typically featured pricey wine, five-star restaurants, and people she hardly knew, but she felt powerless to turn him no. James had, after all, always been her pillar of support, particularly following their parents' financial downfall almost ten years before.
Sophie's breath caught as she walked into the darkened restaurant. The room exuded grandeur, with golden accents, crystal chandeliers, and an aura of exclusivity that made her feel uncomfortable in her plain black outfit.
"Over here!" James waved from a private table in the corner. He was all smiles, dressed in a perfectly tailored suit that screamed success. But Sophie barely noticed him.
Sitting across from her brother was Lucas Vance.
Her heart stuttered, and the air seemed to leave the room. Lucas Vance. The name alone carried weight. He was a tech tycoon who had built empires out of startups and was one of the city's most influential billionaires. However, Lucas was a quite different matter to Sophie. He had been a constant in her life for as long as she could remember, was her brother's best friend, and had once, though he was unaware of it, broken her heart.
Lucas's sharp blue eyes met hers as he raised his head. The world around them briefly became hazy. Even with the subtle simplicity of his navy suit, his tall form demanded attention as he stood up from his chair.
His deep voice sent an uncontrollable chill down her spine as he said, "Sophie." "It's been a long time."
In the hopes that he wouldn't notice the impact he still had on her, she forced a grin. "Lucas. It's nice to meet you.
Before she could accept Lucas's hand, James pulled her into a bear hug, relieving the tension.
"Look at you! James taunted, ruffling her hair as he used to when they were little, "My baby sister is all grown up."
"Stop it!" Sophie swatted his hand away, laughing. Her eyes, however, strayed back to Lucas, who was observing her with an enigmatic look.
As the evening wore on, Sophie made an effort to concentrate on James's enthusiastic tales of his most recent business endeavors, but she couldn't get rid of the sensation that Lucas was watching her. His typical charisma was subdued, and he was quieter than she remembered. by something deeper, something she couldn't quite put her finger on.
"So, Sophie," Lucas said suddenly, his voice cutting through James's rambling. "What's next for you? Are you planning to stay in New York?"
Sophie hesitated. "That's the plan. I'm hoping to get my art career off the ground, but..." She trailed off, feeling the weight of her uncertainty.
Lucas leaned forward, his gaze steady. "You'll succeed. I have no doubt about that."
Her cheeks flushed under his intensity. "Thanks, but it's not that simple."
"Nothing worthwhile ever is," he replied, his voice softer now.
Before Sophie could respond, James clapped his hands. "Alright, enough shop talk. Let's celebrate!"
Even though the evening was filled with good wine and laughing, Sophie couldn't get rid of the suspicion that Lucas was concealing something. Although he was kind and attractive, there was a tenseness in his jaw and a hint of guardedness in his eyes.
James drew Sophie away as they left the restaurant and entered the cool night air. "Hey, I have to leave. Tomorrow is an early meeting. Can I rely on Lucas to bring you home securely?
With hesitation, Sophie looked at Lucas, who was idly resting against a sleek black automobile. "I can take care of myself."
Lucas responded, "Nonsense," in a tone that made no space for debate. "I'll give you a ride."
Lucas opened the passenger door for her before she could object.
At first, the car ride was silent, with a lot of unspoken words weighing on the silence.
Sophie glanced at Lucas as she fidgeted with her bag's strap. At last, she whispered, "You know you don't have to do this."
"What do you do?" Act like a gentleman. You have better things to do than take me home, I'm sure. With a hint of a smile tugging at his lips, Lucas looked at her. "I'm not bothered.
In addition, I have a duty to James to protect you. Sophie's chest grew constricted. To him, was that all she was? A duty? Lucas glanced at her when they arrived at her building. "Sophie." Her hand was on the doorknob as she froze. "Yes?"
He hesitated as if weighing his next words carefully. "If you ever need help-with your art, with anything-don't hesitate to ask."
Surprised by the earnestness of his voice, Sophie scowled. "What makes you want to assist me?"
Lucas's jaw tensed, and for a split second, it appeared as though he may say something significant that would alter the course of events. He shook his head, nevertheless. "Let's just say that you have my faith."
The car door clicked open before she could push him any further, and he left while holding her door.
"Goodnight, Sophie," he replied in a low, unintelligible voice.
Her mind was racing with questions as she up the stairs to her flat. What was causing Lucas's odd behavior? And why did it seem like he was keeping something from her?
He was still standing by the car, watching her, when she turned to look at him again. Their eyes locked for a second, and she thought she saw a flash of something raw, something vulnerable, in his eyes.
Then the elegant car drove off, and he was gone, vanishing into the darkness. With her heart racing,
Sophie walked into her flat and leaned against the door. She couldn't shake the feeling that something far greater than herself had begun when she returned to New York.
And Lucas Vance was at the center of it all.
As Sophie set her portfolio on the table, a folded piece of paper fluttered out. Frowning, she picked it up and unfolded it. Her blood ran cold as she read the message scrawled in sharp, deliberate handwriting:
"Stay away from Lucas Vance. You don't know what you're getting into."
Her fingers trembled as she stared at the note. Who had written it? And what secret was Lucas hiding?
