Chapter 1 A Mournful Day

Samantha stood by her son's grave, her knees weak as they gave way, and she was kneeling beside Thomas, her son's grave, but her heart weighed down with something far heavier than exhaustion. The small mound of freshly dug soil seemed too raw, too real, to accept the harsh truth of life. "How could Thomas my son be gone in just a blink of an eye? He was very young, I barely had much time to get to play with him, show him some school home and how he would conquer the world with his big dreams," Samantha stated with her voice trembling.

" This is so much for her to take in and believe that he is no more, Thomas' joyful laughter is no longer heard like in the past. May he rest in peace, Thomas, you will forever be in our hearts." Simon murmured to himself as the wind had started to pick up, and dark clouds rolled in, swallowing the last bits of sunlight. Simon, her driver, stood at a distance, watching her with a worried expression. He knew she had not moved for nearly an hour. The sun had disappeared behind the gathering storm clouds, and the chill in the air was biting.

" Mrs. Samantha... it is getting late. The storm is coming in fast. We should take our leave. It is not safe here after dark given no one lives around." Simon, who took a few steps to where she was, stated with his voice barely a whisper. He stretched his hand to help Mrs. Samantha up.

Samantha did not move. Her lips quivered as she gazed at the gravestone. She had refused to cry in front of the others. Not in front of the pitiful eyes of friends and her in-law, who came for the ceremony and left just as quickly, disappearing into the shadows. But now, standing in the darkness, all alone, she could feel her chest tightening, her breath becoming uneven. The grief that she had held back all day now threatened to break free.

" I can't leave him here alone... not yet, he will be lonely. What if... what if..." Samantha whispered to herself. Her voice was barely audible, and Simon took a step forward, unsure whether he should approach or give her space. He cleared his throat, hesitating before he spoke again.

" Mrs. Samantha, please ... Don't worry, he will be safe, but he won't forgive himself when his mother gets into trouble. It is not safe out here. Mr. Salvador asked me to take him home before it got dark. The storm might..." Simon stated.

Samantha finally blinked, tearing her eyes away from the gravestone. She glanced at the sky. Dark was falling, and the clouds were thickening, threatening to break open. She knew Simon was right. Thomas was gone, and no amount of kneeling there would bring him back.

" It's okay, I will..." Samantha

Reluctantly, she nodded and turned toward the waiting car as she used Simon's hand to support herself up to her feet.

Samantha climbed into the back seat of the black car as the drive back to the house was quiet, the atmosphere heavy with the weight of unspoken words. Samantha stared out the window, watching the trees blur past as raindrops began to fall. Each drop against the window felt like another tear that drew her apart. She could not cry. She wasn't ready to face those pitiful faces or anyone at home at this despicable moment of life, not even Mathias, her spouse, not the rest of the in-laws. She wasn't ready to confront the reality of her life without Thomas, her late son.

The car docked inside the enormous mansion's huge gate as it drove off to the mansion's front door.

" We are home, ma'am, let me come and...." Simon stated when they arrived. The mansion was fairly quiet. It felt wrong, too still, as if it, too, mourned the loss of her son. Samantha opened the car door before Simon could offer, stepping out into the cold air. The ground was wet from the heavy rain droplets, and the wind had begun to howl violently. She pulled her coat tighter around her, barely noticing Simon's attempt at offering her an umbrella to cover from the harsh weather.

" Will you be alright, ma'am?" Simon inquired with a pitiful voice.

Samantha didn't answer. She walked up the steps to the front door, her steps slow and heavy. Once inside, the warmth of the house felt suffocating. The smell of food lingered in the air, leftovers from the meal she had skipped. The house staff were likely preparing to leave, knowing she wasn't in the mood for company.

" I pity ma'am, she must be through a lot at this moment of her life" The housemaid who saw her at a distance stated filled with sympathy and worry in their voices.

She made her way upstairs, her feet moving mechanically. Each step up felt heavier, like she was wading through thick, sticky air. The grief was suffocating, her mind hazy with the overwhelming pain of loss. She wanted to collapse and curl up in bed and disappear into sleep, but something nagged at her, something just out of place.

" I can't believe that I won't be seeing my angels again. Why are the heavens so unfair to me?" Samantha stated. When she reached the top of the stairs, she stopped. She was about to enter Thomas' room when her eyes caught the sight of the door to her matrimonial bedroom was slightly ajar, a soft light spilling out into the hallway. Her heart gave a sudden, strange thud.

" Why is the door still open at this hour? Who could be inside, as Mathias has never liked the door to be left open." She murmured in her mind softly as she strolled slowly and lazily with, her breathing shallow. Her hand hesitated over the doorknob, and then, slowly, she pushed the door open.
