Taming the void Chapter 1 Call of the Void

The void always whispered, but Finn Murphy had long stopped listening. He leaned against the weathered hull of his cargo ship, Grey Star, watching the distant shimmer of a dying star from the asteroid outpost where he'd landed. The station's weak artificial gravity tugged at his boots as he scanned the sector. A smuggler by trade, Finn was no stranger to the uncharted fringes of space, where the Galactic Coalition's influence was a distant rumor.

"Another damn ghost town," he muttered, lighting a stim-stick and exhaling smoke into the cold, sterile air.

The outpost's docking bay was eerily silent. Finn knew better than to trust the quiet. Out here, silence was often the precursor to death. He reached for the plasma pistol strapped to his thigh, his fingers brushing its grip for comfort.

As he stepped further into the station, his comm crackled.

"Murphy, you sure about this?" came the gravelly voice of Varro, his pilot and only companion.

"No," Finn replied dryly, glancing back at the ship. "But since when has certainty paid the bills?"

Varro's reply was cut off by static, followed by a low rumble that vibrated through the deck plating. Finn froze. That sound was no engine. It was a growl, deep and guttural, reverberating through the bones of the station.

"Strynx," Finn muttered.

The name alone made his stomach churn. Beasts born of the void, the Strynx were nightmare incarnate-hulking creatures with jagged exoskeletons, bioluminescent veins, and a hunger for destruction. Even armed ships avoided engaging them unless absolutely necessary.

Finn tightened his grip on the pistol and advanced cautiously, his boots clicking against the metal floor. The dim lights flickered, casting long, twitching shadows.

A sudden movement caught his eye. He whirled, weapon raised, only to find a figure stumbling toward him.

It was a woman, her face pale, her uniform scorched and torn. She clutched her side, blood seeping between her fingers.

"Help..." she rasped before collapsing.

Finn cursed under his breath, rushing to her side. Her breathing was shallow, but she was alive-for now. Slipping his arm under her shoulders, he dragged her toward the Grey Star.

"Varro, prep med bay!" Finn barked into his comm.

As they approached the ship, another rumble echoed through the station, this one closer and louder. Finn's heart raced as he caught a glimpse of it-a Strynx, emerging from the shadows. Its glowing eyes locked onto him, and its mandibles clicked in anticipation.

"Move, move, move!"

Finn half-carried, half-dragged the woman up the ship's ramp. The Strynx charged, its claws gouging deep furrows into the deck. Finn dove into the ship just as Varro slammed the hatch shut.

"Punch it!" Finn shouted as he secured the woman to the med bay cot.

Varro didn't need to be told twice. The Grey Star roared to life, its engines flaring as the ship rocketed away from the station. The Strynx leapt, its claws scraping the hull, but it couldn't hold on. The void swallowed the creature as they broke free.

In the med bay, Finn stabilized the woman's bleeding with an auto-suture and a dose of painkillers. Her eyelids fluttered open, revealing storm-gray eyes that burned with determination.

"Who are you?" Finn asked.

"Bella Kern," she murmured. "You have no idea what you just stumbled into"

I went to the City Clerk’s office for a routine copy of my marriage license to finalize a trust fund audit. I expected a simple piece of paper, but the clerk’s pitying look told me my entire life was a lie. "The license was never finalized, Ms. Oliver. In the eyes of the state, you are single." The three-hundred-guest wedding at the Plaza and the Vogue features meant nothing. My husband, Gray Cooley, had intentionally filed the documents with a "procedural defect" so he could discard me without a legal divorce. Moments later, an iCloud invite titled "Our Little Secret" popped up on my screen. It was a photo of my best friend, Brylee, holding a positive pregnancy test at our Hamptons estate. Gray’s text to her was the final blow: "Happy anniversary, babe. This baby is the best gift. Once the trust unlocks today, we’re done with the charade." I soon discovered they were even stealing my career, reassigning my architectural masterpiece to Brylee while preparing my eviction notice. Gray's mother called me a "barren mule" in a leaked recording, mocking the infertility I suffered after saving Gray’s life in a construction accident. I wasn't a wife; I was a three-year placeholder used to secure his inheritance. How could the man I bled for treat me like a disposable prop? How could my best friend carry his child while pretending to comfort me through my darkest moments? The betrayal burned until it turned into a cold, hard stone of fury. I didn't cry. Instead, I walked into the penthouse of the Barretts, the Cooleys' most powerful rivals. I signed a marriage contract with Kane Barrett, the man the tabloids called the "Beast of Wall Street." "I want a wedding," I told his father, my voice steady and lethal. "Bigger than the one I had with Gray." If they wanted me gone, they would have to watch me become the woman who owns their world.

The rain in Detroit was slick with grime when my family finally came to fetch me. They didn't want a reunion; they wanted a sacrificial lamb to marry into the Kaufman empire to save their failing business. I thought I was just being sold off, but the limo ride ended under a dark overpass where six hired thugs were waiting with chains. My own sister had ordered them to "break my spirit" so I’d be a shaking, pathetic mess by the time I reached the altar. They called me "Detroit trash" and sprayed air freshener when I sat on their leather seats. My stepmother wanted a video of me begging for my life, and my father was ready to trade me like a used car to a man everyone called a "vegetable." They expected a submissive country girl, unaware that I was a high-level "cleaner" who could snap a radius bone before they could even scream. When I finally reached the Kaufman estate, I found my fiancé, Barron, slumped in a wheelchair, drooling and silent. But as soon as the doors closed, the "invalid" grabbed my wrist with a grip of iron and whispered a command that changed everything. I didn't understand why my own blood was so desperate to see me destroyed. What had I ever done to deserve a hit squad and a forced marriage to a man they thought was a corpse? But Barron isn't a vegetable, and I'm not a victim. We just touched down at the Moon family gala in a matte-black helicopter, and as the doors slide open, the "broken" bride is about to show them exactly what happens when you throw away the wrong daughter. "If we're going to crash a party," Barron whispered, his eyes burning with lethal clarity, "we should make an entrance."
