As tensions rise and ancient prophecies awaken, Mira must make an impossible choice: expose the truth and risk annihilation, or embrace a dark destiny she never saw coming.

WOLVES IN THE SHADOW Chapter 1 The Trap

Mira Caldwell kept her footsteps quiet and steady, trying to blend into the darkness of The Hollow District. The old part of the city was far from beautiful, with small lighted alleyways, cracked pavement, and graffiti-designed walls that speak about dark secrets. But this was where Mira's latest lead had brought her. She didn't mind the dirt. She didn't mind the danger. What she did mind was the truth she was chasing. And tonight, it felt closer than ever.

Mira pulled her jacket tighter around her, trying to cover herself from the chilling cold weather in the evening air. She was used to working alone. She was used to being on the brink of danger. Tonight seemed different to her, she was having a strange feeling within her, the air seemed weird, and she seemed to be watched.

Hollow District was known for its secrets. Strange disappearances. Unexplained events. And it was all connected to the luxury development project that billionaire real estate mogul Dane Voss was backing. Everyone in the city was talking about it, but no one knew the truth behind the project-or what was really happening in secret.

Mira had been following this trail for weeks. People had been disappearing without traces. Those who were brave, or foolish enough to ask questions never returned. And now, she was on the brink of discovering something big.

She crawled as she approached the old warehouse at the end of the street. The streetlights kept flashing above her, displaying scary shadows across the alley. She could hear voices ahead, low and hushed. Mira's heart raced as she crawled closer, her camera ready.

Through the small opening in the broken fence, she saw them. Two men, dragging something heavy between them. At first, she thought it was a bag. But as they shifted their load, Mira's breath seized in her throat. It wasn't a bag. It was a person.

A lifeless body, with an arm escaping from the bag which was later returned hurriedly

Her pulse quickened as she focused the lens of her camera on the men. They moved with strange accuracy as if they had done this before. But their movements were straight in the dark like they were trying to hide what they were doing. They had to rush things to avoid any form of disclosure.

Mira clicked the button on her camera, capturing the moment. The men were too focused on their task to notice her. They dragged the body toward the warehouse, disappearing into the shadows. But Mira didn't move. She knew better than to rush in. She had to wait. This was the break she needed.

In her mind, she directed a question to herself. Was this how her father disappeared? Her father Mr Caldwell also disappeared some years back without any trace during his time working for the Dane Voss family which she just uncovered a secret about.

She checked the screen of her camera. The images were not clear in the low light, but clear enough to understand what the photos were displaying, the men were wearing dark jackets and gloves, their faces hidden in the darkness. But one of them had a tattoo on his neck, something that looked like a wolf's paw. Mira's heart seized in her rib cage. This was no ordinary gang. This was something far more dangerous.

She zoomed in on the tattoo, her fingers shaking. The mark was unmistakable. It was the symbol of the Voss Pack. The same pack that Dane Voss controlled. The pack that had been linked to the disappearances.

She snapped a few more photos to ensure she captured a lot more angles, Her job as an investigative journalist was to uncover the truth. But this seems different and dangerous. This wasn't just a story. This was a warning.

But as she turned to move, a sudden sound behind her, made her heart seize. Footsteps, Slow and calculated, Someone was coming.

Mira's heart kept pounding in her chest. She tried to remain unseen, blending with the darkness. The footsteps became louder and closer. She looked around where she was hiding and saw a tall man in a fine suit, walking straight toward her. He moved smartly, his eyes checking around the alley as if he already knew she was there.

His eyes glowed golden.

Mira's heart vibrated with a speed that wasn't natural. She had only seen those eyes once before-when she'd encountered Dane Voss. The Voss Pack. The werewolves.

Her camera dropped to the ground with a soft sound, but she didn't dare make a sound. The man's gaze never left her. He shifted his head slightly as if studying her. His eyes moved to the camera, then back to her, and she could see his lips moving, a smile came out from his mouth which wasn't friendly but scary.

"You shouldn't be here," the man said with a low voice. It made a shiver run through her body. "You've seen too much."

Mira's mind raced. She had to think fast. She had to get away. But her legs felt like they were made of stone and couldn't be carried. The golden eyes of the stranger seemed to affect her, it made her powerless.

"Who are you?" she asked with a whisper. She had to know. She had to understand what was happening.

The man didn't answer right away. Instead, he took a step closer. "You should leave now. Before it's too late."

Mira's mind kept telling her to run as fast as she could. But she didn't. She couldn't. There was too much at risk now. The truth was so close. She felt like still getting the truth out.

But before she could move, something changed in the air. She felt a sharp, cold presence. Another figure appeared from nowhere, a second man, tall with big shoulders. the shadow didn't display his face, but Mira could feel his eyes on her, heavy and scary.

Both men were looking at her now, their golden eyes shining like fire in the night.

"We don't want to hurt you," the first man said, his voice was cool, "but if you don't leave, we'll make you leave here the way you won't appreciate."

She swallowed her saliva hard, her fingers still holding onto her camera. She had one shot, one chance to get out of here with the evidence she needed. The Voss Pack had secrets. Dark secrets. And Mira would uncover them, no matter the cost.

But the two men were very close to her now, and she was running out of time.

Suddenly, the man with the golden eyes jumped forward, and Mira's instincts kicked in. She dove to the side, narrowly avoiding his hold on her. She adjusted herself to her feet, her heart beating very fast as she ran toward the alley's exit.

The sound of footsteps echoing behind her made her run faster than normal, but she could hear their voices too clearly now. "She won't get away."

"She's already marked."

Mira didn't understand what it meant, but the words made her heart seize.

As she got to the corner and ran into the open street, she looked immediately behind her. They were still coming. She could only hear them but couldn't see them.

A car stopped instantly in front of her, and Mira didn't wait for it and instead decided to keep running. She was hoping for a getaway but couldn't enter this vehicle because she didn't trust the driver enough to enter his vehicle. The driver rolled down the window, eyes wide with fear.

"Get in!" he shouted.

Mira looked at him and dodged his vehicle to another lane where she increased her speed again to avoid capture.

The car sped off into the night, and Mira glanced at it, her heart still racing. She was shaken, but she knew one thing for sure.

She had to get those photos. She had to discover the truth.

But the Voss Pack had just taken notice of her. And she was no longer just chasing a story.

She was the story.

HONEY MULLINS

Six years ago, I was a naive girl sold by my father to the powerful Sanders estate, only to be tossed onto the streets after a brutal assault they labeled "marital infidelity." I fled the country pregnant and broken, hiding from the shadow of a husband I had never even met. Now, I've returned to New York with my triplets to sign the final divorce papers and disappear forever. But Archibald Sanders-the man I was told was a crippled recluse-intercepted us with the cold precision of a predator. He didn't see the woman his family destroyed; he saw a gold-digger who had shamed his name. His security team hunted us to a grimy motel, using tactical force to snatch my children away and drag me to his glass-walled empire. In his office, he loomed over me, demanding a DNA test and threatening to throw me in prison while my babies were lost to the foster system. He was convinced I'd cheated, yet he stared at my sons with a haunting confusion, unable to ignore the stormy blue eyes that were a perfect mirror of his own. I stood there, paralyzed by his scent-the sharp tang of rain and expensive leather that triggered the icy dread of my worst nightmares. How could he accuse me of betrayal when he felt exactly like the monster who had shattered my life in that dark hotel room? "I'll sign anything," I sobbed, "just give me my kids." But the game changed when my five-year-old son hacked the tower's security, holding the skyscraper hostage to save me. In the chaos, a fragile, silent boy-Archibald's secret son-wandered into the room and reached for me as if I were his missing soul. Archibald's face turned to stone as he tore up the agreement and locked the doors. "Until I find out why my son is looking at you like that," he growled, "you aren't going anywhere."

My bank account showed exactly $42.18, and my student loan notifications were flashing red. I lived in a sweltering Queens apartment with my Aunt Lydia, where the air was thick with the smell of stale frying oil and the constant threat of being homeless. Lydia handed me a grainy photo of a man twice my age and told me she had already "sold" me to him. He was a dry cleaner looking for a wife, and in exchange for my hand, he would pay off her credit cards and my debt. If I didn't show up for the date that night, my boxes would be on the curb by midnight. I arrived at the cafe in a state of panic, my selective mutism making it impossible to even breathe. In the crowded room, I accidentally sat at the wrong table. Instead of the man from the photo, I found myself facing Gerhard Holcomb—the cold, terrifyingly handsome billionaire whose family owned the very museum where I worked. He didn't send me away; instead, he studied my trembling hands and offered me a different deal: a two-year contract marriage, a two-million-dollar payout, and a strict clause forbidding any children. I signed the papers and moved into his Park Avenue penthouse, thinking I was finally safe. But when I went back to the old apartment to retrieve the only memento of my dead parents, Lydia lashed out, leaving me bleeding from a head wound. Gerhard’s retaliation was absolute—he had her arrested and her building foreclosed on within hours, claiming he was simply "protecting his assets." As I recovered in his silent, glass-walled home, I saw a call from a famous socialite flash on his phone, and a cold truth settled in my gut. I wasn't just a wife; I was a placeholder, a silent shield used to fend off the women from his past. I looked at the massive pink diamond on my finger and realized the silence I had lived in my whole life was about to become my most expensive prison. I had traded a life of poverty for a high-stakes game of shadows, and now I had to survive the man who claimed to own me.

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.

I was once the heiress to the Solomon empire, but after it crumbled, I became the "charity case" ward of the wealthy Hyde family. For years, I lived in their shadows, clinging to the promise that Anson Hyde would always be my protector. That promise shattered when Anson walked into the ballroom with Claudine Chapman on his arm. Claudine was the girl who had spent years making my life a living hell, and now Anson was announcing their engagement to the world. The humiliation was instant. Guests sneered at my cheap dress, and a waiter intentionally sloshed champagne over me, knowing I was a nobody. Anson didn't even look my way; he was too busy whispering possessively to his new fiancée. I was a ghost in my own home, watching my protector celebrate with my tormentor. The betrayal burned. I realized I wasn't a ward; I was a pawn Anson had kept on a shelf until he found a better trade. I had no money, no allies, and a legal trust fund that Anson controlled with a flick of his wrist. Fleeing to the library, I stumbled into Dallas Koch-a titan of industry and my best friend's father. He was a wall of cold, absolute power that even the Hydes feared. "Marry me," I blurted out, desperate to find a shield Anson couldn't climb. Dallas didn't laugh. He pulled out a marriage agreement and a heavy fountain pen. "Sign," he commanded, his voice a low rumble. "But if you walk out that door with me, you never go back." I signed my name, trading my life for the only man dangerous enough to keep me safe.

I went to the City Clerk’s office for a routine copy of my marriage license to finalize a trust fund audit. I expected a simple piece of paper, but the clerk’s pitying look told me my entire life was a lie. "The license was never finalized, Ms. Oliver. In the eyes of the state, you are single." The three-hundred-guest wedding at the Plaza and the Vogue features meant nothing. My husband, Gray Cooley, had intentionally filed the documents with a "procedural defect" so he could discard me without a legal divorce. Moments later, an iCloud invite titled "Our Little Secret" popped up on my screen. It was a photo of my best friend, Brylee, holding a positive pregnancy test at our Hamptons estate. Gray’s text to her was the final blow: "Happy anniversary, babe. This baby is the best gift. Once the trust unlocks today, we’re done with the charade." I soon discovered they were even stealing my career, reassigning my architectural masterpiece to Brylee while preparing my eviction notice. Gray's mother called me a "barren mule" in a leaked recording, mocking the infertility I suffered after saving Gray’s life in a construction accident. I wasn't a wife; I was a three-year placeholder used to secure his inheritance. How could the man I bled for treat me like a disposable prop? How could my best friend carry his child while pretending to comfort me through my darkest moments? The betrayal burned until it turned into a cold, hard stone of fury. I didn't cry. Instead, I walked into the penthouse of the Barretts, the Cooleys' most powerful rivals. I signed a marriage contract with Kane Barrett, the man the tabloids called the "Beast of Wall Street." "I want a wedding," I told his father, my voice steady and lethal. "Bigger than the one I had with Gray." If they wanted me gone, they would have to watch me become the woman who owns their world.
