Chapter 1 You can never be my mother

You are looking nice, my love."

In the dark room, a man's hoarse voice whispered into Chloe's ear. Her hands were cuffed to the bed, and her eyes were covered with a black cloth.

She couldn't understand or see anything. She moved her body into a small ball, shrinking her form to endure the pain inflicted on her body.

In the complete darkness, she could feel the man raping her.

"Good girl. Now, let's go into another position, okay?"

Chloe opened her eyes wide, breathing heavily. It had been five years, yet it felt like it had just happened recently. She could never sleep without dreaming about it.

She stood up from the bed and walked toward the bathroom to wash her face. As she splashed water on her face, she felt some relief.

Not long after, she heard some noise coming from downstairs. She walked out to check what was going on and found her father and her stepsister arguing.

"I can never marry into that family. I don't want to marry him, Father. Never!" Valentina shouted.

It had become a habit, so Chloe didn't care much about their conversation. She wanted to turn back and go to her room, but the next words she heard made her stop in her tracks.

"Chloe should be the one to marry that man, not me, Father. After all, she is not your biological daughter."

"So, why must I suffer?" Valentina said.

"She is right, Lucas! It's time she paid us after all these years," Sharon, Valentina's mother, said.

"She is also your daughter, Sharon!" Mr. Lucas replied.

"She is my daughter, but not biologically. I didn't give birth to her, and it's time she paid us back for raising her and giving her the best life."

"It's not like she can find anyone to marry her after what happened to her. This is the best opportunity to send her away," Sharon said.

"Mom is right, Dad! Otherwise, she'll keep living here, and people will start pointing fingers at you. Besides, she's familiar with kids, so she's the best person for this, not me," Valentina added.

"No! I don't want to! I don't want men. Men are monsters; they are going to hurt me!" Chloe said, repeating the word "monsters." The incident that happened five years ago still traumatized her.

Mr. Lucas immediately stood up when he heard her voice. Chloe placed her head in her hands, repeating, "Men are monsters."

Mr. Lucas quickly held her shoulders.

"Snap out of it, Chloe! No one is hurting you. You need to stop this now," he said.

"Stop this, Chloe," Mr. Lucas said. Chloe fell unconscious.

Mr. Lucas carried her to her room and came out looking worried.

"Let's get her married to him. He didn't choose anyone between your two daughters. He said either one of them should pay your debt and save the company."

"And Chloe is the best option to send to him," Sharon said.

"I know you really hate her because she's not your biological daughter, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't care about her," Mr. Lucas said.

"Do you want her to get married in this condition? After what happened to her, you know she hasn't been herself since. And you know the Knight family isn't someone you can deceive. You know the consequences. Do you still want me to get her married to him?"

"Yes! You don't expect me to send my own daughter there. How can you like her more than your own daughter? She isn't even your daughter!" Sharon shouted.

"I don't want Chloe to marry into the Declan family. You know how dangerous they are. They're only after power, and you also know he has two kids already. I can't send her into that scary family," Mr. Lucas said.

"You know they are scary, right? And you know it takes them no time to send someone to jail. You better choose wisely. Send her there, or we all rot in jail, and they'll take the company from us as well."

"I will get married to him," Chloe said before Mr. Lucas could say anything.

Mr. Lucas turned and saw Chloe resting against the wall.

"You're awake?" Mr. Lucas said.

"I will get married to him, just like she said I should repay you for raising me. After all, what's my use here? My life has been ruined, so it's okay."

"I will get married to him," Chloe said in a final tone.

She walked out before Mr. Lucas could say anything. Sharon and Valentina quickly ran after her.

"You made a good choice, my dear," Sharon said as she started packing her things, with Valentina helping.

After they helped her pack her things, they carried her bags.

"Chloe!" Mr. Lucas called, trying to convince her.

"I'm okay! This is the least I can do," she said.

The door flew open, and two men in black suits walked in.

Mr. Lucas knew they were from the Knight family.

"This is the agreement," one of the men said, handing him the paper to sign.

Chloe took the paper from Mr. Lucas and signed it.

"I, Chloe, agree to marry into the Knight family to settle my family's debt."

The two men helped her with her luggage after she signed the paper.

Chloe never thought she would start living with someone apart from her family, and not just anyone-a man, her worst nightmare.

She entered the car, and they drove off in silence.

Chloe's mind was troubled. She never imagined her life would turn out like this, but now everything was falling apart in front of her eyes.

Chloe didn't care about who she was getting married to. After all, her life had already been ruined a long time ago.

The car stopped in front of a big mansion. Chloe got out and was escorted to the back of the mansion, where there was another building.

A maid walked out and helped her inside.

"You will be staying here until the young master comes back," the maid said, showing her to the room.

Chloe nodded, and the maid left her alone. She sat on the bed, resting her head.

When the door opened, Chloe thought it was the man. But when she looked, she saw two children standing at the entrance-a boy and a girl.

Chloe stared at them. The look they gave her wasn't just a look; it meant something.

"What happened?" Chloe asked.

The girl walked closer to Chloe, took the glass of drink from the table, and poured it on Chloe's dress.

Chloe gasped.

"Leave this place! You can never be my mom! Never!" the girl shouted, then turned and ran out.

I woke up in a blindingly white hotel penthouse with a throbbing headache and the taste of betrayal in my mouth. The last thing I remembered was my stepsister, Cathie, handing me a flute of champagne at the charity gala with a smile that didn't reach her eyes. Now, a tall, dangerously handsome man walked out of the bathroom with a towel around his hips. On the nightstand sat a stack of hundred-dollar bills. My stepmother had finally done it—she drugged me and staged a scandal with a hired escort to destroy my reputation and my future. "Aisha! Is it true you spent the night with a gigolo?" The shouts of a dozen reporters echoed through the heavy oak door as camera flashes exploded through the peephole. My phone lit up with messages showing my bank accounts were already frozen. My father was invoking the 'morality clause' in my mother’s trust fund, and my fiancé had already released a statement dumping me to marry my stepsister instead. I was trapped, penniless, and being hunted by the press for a scandal I hadn't even participated in. My own family had sold me out for a payday, and the man standing in front of me was the only witness who could prove I was innocent—or finish me off for good. I didn't have time to cry. According to the fine print of the trust, I had thirty days to prove my "rehabilitation" through a legal marriage or I would lose everything. I tracked the man down to a coffee shop the next morning, watching him take a thick envelope of cash from a wealthy older woman. I sat across from him and slid a napkin with a $50,000 figure written on it. "I need a husband. Legal, paper-signed, and convincing." He looked at the number, then at me, a slow, crooked smile spreading across his face. I thought I was hiring a desperate gigolo to save my inheritance. I had no idea I was actually proposing to Dominic Fields, the reclusive billionaire shark who was currently planning a hostile takeover of my father’s entire empire.

I had just survived a private jet crash, my body a map of violet bruises and my lungs still burning from the smoke. I woke up in a sterile hospital room, gasping for my husband's name, only to realize I was completely alone. While I was bleeding in a ditch, my husband, Adam, was on the news smiling at a ribbon-cutting ceremony. When I tracked him down at the hospital's VIP wing, I didn't find a grieving husband. I found him tenderly cradling his ex-girlfriend, Casie, in his arms, his face lit with a protective warmth he had never shown me as he carried her into the maternity ward. The betrayal went deeper than I could have imagined. Adam admitted the affair started on our third anniversary-the night he claimed he was stuck in London for a merger. Back at the manor, his mother had already filled our planned nursery with pink boutique bags for Casie's "little princess." When I demanded a divorce, Adam didn't flinch. He sneered that I was "gutter trash" from a foster home and that I'd be begging on the streets within a week. To trap me, he froze my bank accounts, cancelled my flight, and even called the police to report me for "theft" of company property. I realized then that I wasn't his partner; I was a charity case he had plucked from obscurity to manage his life. To the Hortons, I was just a servant who happened to sleep in the master bedroom, a "resilient" woman meant to endure his abuse in silence while the whole world laughed at the joke that was my marriage. Adam thought stripping me of his money would make me crawl back to him. He was wrong. I walked into his executive suite during his biggest deal of the year and poured a mug of sludge over his original ten-million-dollar contracts. Then, right in front of his board and his mistress, I stripped off every designer thread he had ever paid for until I was standing in nothing but my own silk camisole. "You can keep the clothes, Adam. They're as hollow as you are." I grabbed my passport, turned my back on his billions, and walked out of that glass tower barefoot, bleeding, and finally free.
