Be Careful With My Heart Chapter 1 The Deal

I walked into a big mansion.I held my breath for a second. The ceilings were high end with sparkling chandeliers hanging down. The curtains were beautiful and fluffy and they moved with the slightest wind.

I wrapped my hands around my arms.I couldn't count the numerous air conditioners in the room.It was very large that for a second,I thought I have come to the wrong place.

This was the second largest mansion I was seeing, after that of my foster parents.

"Miss Valdez, this way please" a woman in white apron gestured and I stopped my admiration of the place and followed her.

We moved further down and came before a steel door. The apron lady pressed a button and the door pushed open before them.

I stepped in along with her and my heart almost jumped out of my chest the moment it started moving.

It was moving so fast that I had no other option than to grab the lady beside me,for fear of falling. Not that I had never been in an elevator, but this..the speed of this one could easily tell anyone that the amount was not smiling.

"Have you not been in an elevator before?!" the lady said in annoyance as she pulled my grip off of her.

Losing control,I swerved to the other side and scratched my arm against an iron steel.I wasn't the least annoyed with the lady, trust me I have seen people with worse sense of humor.

Seeing that I was already feeling a bit dizzy,I sprawled myself across the floor of the elevator.I could feel the lady's piercing stare at me but I don't care.I still have my life to live and I cannot afford to die.

Not yet at least since I haven't met the love of my life.

It finally stopped and I stepped into another larger room.Okay..so where are the owners of this large house?

The lady disappeared inside another room and came out seconds later. She disappeared again and I busied myself with cleaning off the small blood that had seeped out of her wound caused in the elevator.

I heard the creak of a door and when I looked up I couldn't believe what I was seeing. The lady that approached from the door looked exactly like me! I slowly stood up to my feet.

I'll have to correct myself though. Not exactly like me because she had this make up stuff done all over her face and on her body was a high tuxedo gown and I need no one to tell me that it would cost millions of dollars.

I was now wondering how such a beautiful woman could be on a wheel chair! She smiled at me.

"I see you've made yourself feel at home already." she said as the wheel chair automatically moved on its own accord.

I quickly snapped out of my thoughts of her

"I.. I'm sorry.I just-" I began

"It's okay.Have a seat" the woman said

"I am Stephanie Collins, wife of Edward Collins" she introduced herself.

With that introduction did she really expect me to know who she is? Those names didn't ring a bell.

"Sorry but uhm.." how would I put this? "..those names don't ring a bell."

Stephanie frowned. Was this girl really serious right now? How could the name of the most influential CEO not ring a bell? But she couldn't get angry because of the quest at stake.

"Collins is the name of the most influential groups in Illinois right now,how could you not know that?"

"Sorry" I smiled "I have other things better than sticking my nose in others business" I answered

"Not knowing something that the whole world knows is not sticking your nose in others business,it is stark ignorance." Stephanie replied, half annoyed

"Oh Miss.." I struggled to remember the name "...Miss Collins I can assure you that not the whole world knows of your famous group."

"What?" she exclaimed

"Yes.Like me for example.I am just hearing this for the first time and I am certainly part of the whole world."

"You're not even a somebody and I know you." Stephanie said.

I was slightly hurt at that word but I didn't let it show. It's better if I just go straight to the point

"What exactly did you call me here for,Miss..." I had forgotten again but I didn't mind.

Stephanie sighed "I need your help." she said and that surprised me.

She just fucking called me a nobody!

"You might be wondering why Mr Collins would marry a woman on wheel chair"

No..I didn't wondered that.I said in my mind

"Well,we met with an accident and it was very ghastly. We didn't die,by my husband's sheer instincts but I was fatally wounded" she continued

I wondered why she was telling me this.

"The doctor said I was paralyzed from the waist downwards"

"I'm sorry" was all I could say

The chair moved a bit.

"I love my husband very much.I want to give him everything he wants but because of my condition I cannot give him a child. The heir to all his wealth and riches.Just a child"

I was feeling really uncomfortable now. What does all this have to do with me?

She held my gaze

"I need your help" she said more firmly this time "I'll give you ten billion dollars or more.I will change your whole life,Diana"

I had a confused look on my face.

"Mrs Collins I have no idea what you're talking about.I...I thought this was supposed to be an interview.I'm desperately in need of a job.I just..I just didn't expect this!" I expressed my disappointment with slumped shoulders.

Just early that morning a receptionist called me and said I was expected for an interview that morning.I wanted to know how she got my number but just like this Stephanie the receptionist ignored my question and said a limousine would pick me up.

I had explained to my housemate,Lillian who had forced me to get ready immediately thinking life had smiled at me

Our rent has gone due and there was no foodstuffs left in the house and Lillian's pole dancing job wasn't bringing in enough.

"I am offering you more than a job. This is a lifetime fortune, Diana"

"How do you know my name?" I snapped back

She sighed.Stephanie didn't expect it to be this hard to convince her.

"You're the perfect person for this job.I want my baby to look handsome and beautiful. You are beautiful although you need few touches here and there."

"You are asking me to ..to... sleep with your..your husband?" I didn't even try to hide the disgust in my tone.

"Don't be disgusted.A lot of women would throw themselves at this golden opportunity." she replied

"Then get those women and don't bother me." I was quick to reply "How could you want another woman to..to.. that's bullshit!"

"Like I said, you're the perfect match.A little touch and nobody will be able to differentiate between you and I.We look alike, which is quite helpful."

I shaked my head

"That way no one would question the baby's resemblance." she said

I tore my gaze away from hers. How can I look like this woman?!

"You have a week to make your decision.Once you get pregnant I'll send the money into your account.During the period of your pregnancy you have the right to ask anything you want."

Stephanie moved her wheel chair towards me

"I will keep the media out of this" she said in a low tone "No one,not even your family or your friends are supposed to know. The day you agree you'll sign a legal document to avoid any scandal"

Stephanie's soft countenance changed all of a sudden.I couldn't see the helpless woman I saw before-the woman I'd felt pity for

This one looked like a chameleon, changing all of a sudden.

"You're allowed to do anything but you cannot fall in love with my husband" she narrowed her eyes "It's against the deal."

I married Clive Harrington, the coldest billionaire in Manhattan, under a strict contract that forbade any emotional burdens. When I needed a high-risk surgery to save my sight, I checked into the clinic alone, hiding the procedure from a husband who saw me as nothing more than a legal asset. I thought I could handle the darkness in silence. But while I was blind and bandaged in my hospital bed, my biological mother called, screaming that if I didn't produce a Harrington heir by the end of the fiscal year, she would cut off the life-saving treatments for my disabled sister. I was crawling on the cold hospital floor, desperately feeling for a cane I had dropped, when I touched a pair of expensive leather shoes. It was Clive. He was supposed to be in London closing a multi-million dollar deal, but there he was, watching his "contract wife" groveling in the dark like a beggar. He didn't walk away in disgust. He carried me to a five-thousand-dollar-a-night VIP suite and sat by my bed, listening in chilling silence as another voicemail from my mother filled the room, calling me a "useless broodmare" who was only worth the trust fund disbursements my marriage secured. I expected him to remind me of Clause 34B or hand me divorce papers now that I was "damaged goods." Instead, I felt his thumb brush a stray tear from my cheek, his presence shifting from a statue of ice into a predatory shield. "I thought I was just currency to you," I whispered, my voice trembling behind the gauze. "Just an investment." Clive didn't answer with words. He picked up his phone and called his head of legal with a single, terrifying command: "Kill the Douglas family’s credit lines. Every debt, every lien—trigger them all. If they want a war, I’ll give them a massacre." As he leaned down to kiss my bandaged forehead, I realized the contract was dead. My husband wasn't protecting an asset anymore; he was hunting the people who had dared to touch what belonged to him.

I stood at my mother’s open grave in the freezing rain, my heels sinking into the mud. The space beside me was empty. My husband, Hilliard Holloway, had promised to cherish me in bad times, but apparently, burying my mother didn't fit into his busy schedule. While the priest’s voice droned on, a news alert lit up my phone. It was a livestream of the Metropolitan Charity Gala. There was Hilliard, looking impeccable in a custom tuxedo, with his ex-girlfriend Charla English draped over his arm. The headline read: "Holloway & English: A Power Couple Reunited?" When he finally returned to our penthouse at 2 AM, he didn't come alone—he brought Charla with him. He claimed she’d had a "medical emergency" at the gala and couldn't be left alone. I found a Tiffany diamond necklace on our coffee table meant for her birthday, and a smudge of her signature red lipstick on his collar. When I confronted him, he simply told me to stop being "hysterical" and "acting like a child." He had no idea I was seven months pregnant with his child. He thought so little of my grief that he didn't even bother to craft a convincing lie, laughing with his mistress in our home while I sat in the dark with a shattered heart and a secret life growing inside me. "He doesn't deserve us," I whispered to the darkness. I didn't scream or beg. I simply left a folder on his desk containing signed divorce papers and a forged medical report for a terminated pregnancy. I disappeared into the night, letting him believe he had successfully killed his own legacy through his neglect. Five years later, Hilliard walked into "The Vault," the city's most exclusive underground auction, looking for a broker to manage his estate. He didn't recognize me behind my Venetian mask, but he couldn't ignore the neon pink graffiti on his armored Maybach that read "DEADBEAT." He had no clue that the three brilliant triplets currently hacking his security system were the very children he thought had been erased years ago. This time, I wasn't just a wife in the way; I was the one holding all the cards.

Rain hammered against the asphalt as my sedan spun violently into the guardrail on the I-95. Blood trickled down my temple, stinging my eyes, while the rhythmic slap of the windshield wipers mocked my panic. Trembling, I dialed my husband, Clive. His executive assistant answered instead, his voice professional and utterly cold. "Mr. Wilson says to stop the theatrics. He said, and I quote, 'Hang up. Tell her I don’t have time for her emotional blackmail tonight.'" The line went dead while I was still trapped in the wreckage. At the hospital, I watched the news footage of Clive wrapping his jacket around his "fragile" ex-girlfriend, Angelena, shielding her from the storm I was currently bleeding in. When I returned to our penthouse, I found a prenatal ultrasound in his suit pocket, dated the day he claimed to be on a business trip. Instead of an apology, Clive met me with a sneer. He told me I was nothing but an "expensive decoration" his father bought to make him look stable. He froze my bank accounts and cut off my cards, waiting for the hunger to drive me back to his feet. I stared at the man I had loved for four years, realizing he didn't just want a wife; he wanted a prop he could switch off. He thought he could starve me into submission while he played father to another woman's child. But Clive forgot one thing. Before I was his trophy wife, I was Starfall—the legendary voice actress who vanished at the height of her fame. "I'm not jealous, Clive. I'm done." I grabbed my old microphone and walked out. I’m not just leaving him; I’m taking the lead role in the biggest saga in Hollywood—the one Angelena is desperate for. This time, the "decoration" is going to burn his world down.

I had just survived a private jet crash, my body a map of violet bruises and my lungs still burning from the smoke. I woke up in a sterile hospital room, gasping for my husband's name, only to realize I was completely alone. While I was bleeding in a ditch, my husband, Adam, was on the news smiling at a ribbon-cutting ceremony. When I tracked him down at the hospital's VIP wing, I didn't find a grieving husband. I found him tenderly cradling his ex-girlfriend, Casie, in his arms, his face lit with a protective warmth he had never shown me as he carried her into the maternity ward. The betrayal went deeper than I could have imagined. Adam admitted the affair started on our third anniversary-the night he claimed he was stuck in London for a merger. Back at the manor, his mother had already filled our planned nursery with pink boutique bags for Casie's "little princess." When I demanded a divorce, Adam didn't flinch. He sneered that I was "gutter trash" from a foster home and that I'd be begging on the streets within a week. To trap me, he froze my bank accounts, cancelled my flight, and even called the police to report me for "theft" of company property. I realized then that I wasn't his partner; I was a charity case he had plucked from obscurity to manage his life. To the Hortons, I was just a servant who happened to sleep in the master bedroom, a "resilient" woman meant to endure his abuse in silence while the whole world laughed at the joke that was my marriage. Adam thought stripping me of his money would make me crawl back to him. He was wrong. I walked into his executive suite during his biggest deal of the year and poured a mug of sludge over his original ten-million-dollar contracts. Then, right in front of his board and his mistress, I stripped off every designer thread he had ever paid for until I was standing in nothing but my own silk camisole. "You can keep the clothes, Adam. They're as hollow as you are." I grabbed my passport, turned my back on his billions, and walked out of that glass tower barefoot, bleeding, and finally free.
