In a glittering city fueled by secrets and ambition, Maya, a determined journalist with a haunted past sets out to expose the dark empire of the Reynolds family. But her plans are thrown into chaos when she crosses paths with Chase Reynolds, the enigmatic heir who seems to live on the knife's edge between corruption and redemption.

Shadows between us Chapter 1 The first encounter

The grand ballroom was alive with the clink of crystal glasses, the soft murmur of voices, and the constant hum of excitement. The scent of expensive perfume mingled with the lingering warmth of the room. Maya's heels clicked sharply against the polished marble floor as she navigated the crowded space, her eyes scanning for an opening, for the answers she had been seeking. The gala was the perfect place to gather information, to rub elbows with the city's elite, to expose the cracks in their glittering facades.

She wasn't here for the champagne or the prestige. No, Maya had a mission, one that had been years in the making. She was a journalist, and more than that, an activist with a hunger for truth. And tonight, she had her sights set on one target: Chase Reynolds.

Chase was the heir to one of the city's wealthiest and most influential families, the Reynolds Group. But behind the golden gates of his family's empire, rumors of corruption, shady deals, and dark secrets had long circulated. Maya had spent months working her way into the right circles, gathering bits and pieces of information to finally expose the truth. She wasn't here to play games. She was here to uncover the lies.

As she moved through the crowd, she caught sight of him: Chase Reynolds himself, standing near the bar, surrounded by a small group of well-dressed individuals, all laughing and talking in that way only the wealthy seemed capable of. His presence was magnetic, effortlessly commanding attention without even trying. His dark hair was neatly styled, and his perfectly tailored suit made him look like he belonged on a runway. He seemed utterly at ease, as though this life was his by right.

Maya's fingers clenched around the strap of her purse as her gaze locked on him. She knew she had to approach him - it was the only way to get the information she needed. But there was something about him that unsettled her, something about the way he carried himself, the confidence in his eyes, that made her hesitate. She pushed the feeling aside. She was here to do a job, and nothing, not even his piercing gaze, would distract her.

With a deep breath, she steeled herself and made her way toward the bar. As she neared, she noticed the subtle way he turned toward her, as if sensing her presence before she even spoke. His eyes - dark, intense - locked onto hers, and for a brief moment, Maya felt a flicker of something she couldn't name.

"Can I get you something to drink?" Chase's voice was smooth, like velvet, but there was an edge to it, a hint of curiosity that made Maya pause.

She couldn't let herself be distracted. Not by the way he stood there, exuding charm and effortless control. She was here for the story.

"No, thank you," she replied, her voice steady despite the racing of her heart. She offered him a polite smile, keeping the distance she needed. "I'm Maya," she added, giving him her first name - enough to be polite, but nothing that would give him an opening to dig deeper into her identity.

"Chase," he said, his smile widening just a fraction, as if he already knew something she didn't. "I don't believe we've met."

"No, we haven't," Maya answered, her lips pressed into a tight smile. She hadn't expected him to recognize her. She'd made sure her appearance tonight was one that blended in - no flashy outfits, no bold statements. She was just another guest, another face in the crowd. But even as she spoke, she could tell that Chase was paying close attention, his gaze far too sharp for comfort.

She felt a pang of irritation, a flicker of unease. How could she be here, so close to him, and not feel like he was already reading her like an open book? His eyes were so intense, as if he could see through her, and it made her skin prickle.

"You're not from around here, are you?" Chase continued, his voice low and inquisitive, his eyes glimmering with an almost predatory curiosity.

Maya raised an eyebrow, momentarily caught off guard by the question. She wasn't used to being called out so directly. "I could ask you the same thing," she replied smoothly, though the words felt sharp even to her own ears. She hadn't meant to sound confrontational, but something about his ease made her want to push back.

He chuckled, clearly unfazed by her response, and for a second, there was a flicker of admiration in his eyes. "Fair enough. What brings you to the Reynolds Gala, then, Maya?"

It was a question she had anticipated, but now that it was asked, she found herself caught off guard. What was she supposed to say? "I'm just here to enjoy the evening," she said after a beat, trying to keep her tone neutral, casual. But she knew it sounded like a lie - and so did he.

For a moment, there was silence between them, the kind that stretched a little too long, and Maya could feel the weight of his gaze on her. He was waiting for her to crack, to reveal something - anything - that would give him an advantage. But Maya wasn't about to make it easy for him. She wasn't just another pretty face at a gala; she had her own agenda.

Chase seemed to sense this, the corner of his mouth tilting upward in the faintest smile. "You're a hard one to read," he said, his voice laced with a playful challenge.

"I try," Maya replied, her heart hammering in her chest, though she didn't know why. She shouldn't be feeling this way - not over someone like him. She had a job to do.

But then, as if sensing her resolve wavering, he took a step closer. The space between them was small, but it felt charged, like an electric current waiting to surge. "Tell me, Maya," he said, lowering his voice just enough that only she could hear. "What is it that you really want?"

Her breath caught. It was the question she had been dreading. The truth was, she wasn't sure what she wanted anymore - only that she had to stay focused.

Before she could respond, a loud voice broke through the tension. A well-dressed woman appeared at Chase's side, interrupting their moment.

"Maya, darling! There you are," the woman said brightly, and without missing a beat, she wrapped her arm around Maya's. "Let me introduce you to some of the others."

Maya gave Chase a quick glance, their eyes meeting once more, this time with an unspoken challenge hanging between them. Then, just as quickly, the moment was gone.

Chase took a small step back, offering her a tight, polite smile. "I'll see you around, Maya," he said.

And with that, he turned and disappeared into the crowd, leaving Maya standing there, her heart still racing, unsure of what had just happened. The encounter had been brief, but it felt significant - like the beginning of something she hadn't been prepared for.

I stood at my mother's open grave in the freezing rain, my heels sinking into the mud. The space beside me was empty. My husband, Hilliard Holloway, had promised to cherish me in bad times, but apparently, burying my mother didn't fit into his busy schedule. While the priest's voice droned on, a news alert lit up my phone. It was a livestream of the Metropolitan Charity Gala. There was Hilliard, looking impeccable in a custom tuxedo, with his ex-girlfriend Charla English draped over his arm. The headline read: "Holloway & English: A Power Couple Reunited?" When he finally returned to our penthouse at 2 AM, he didn't come alone-he brought Charla with him. He claimed she'd had a "medical emergency" at the gala and couldn't be left alone. I found a Tiffany diamond necklace on our coffee table meant for her birthday, and a smudge of her signature red lipstick on his collar. When I confronted him, he simply told me to stop being "hysterical" and "acting like a child." He had no idea I was seven months pregnant with his child. He thought so little of my grief that he didn't even bother to craft a convincing lie, laughing with his mistress in our home while I sat in the dark with a shattered heart and a secret life growing inside me. "He doesn't deserve us," I whispered to the darkness. I didn't scream or beg. I simply left a folder on his desk containing signed divorce papers and a forged medical report for a terminated pregnancy. I disappeared into the night, letting him believe he had successfully killed his own legacy through his neglect. Five years later, Hilliard walked into "The Vault," the city's most exclusive underground auction, looking for a broker to manage his estate. He didn't recognize me behind my Venetian mask, but he couldn't ignore the neon pink graffiti on his armored Maybach that read "DEADBEAT." He had no clue that the three brilliant triplets currently hacking his security system were the very children he thought had been erased years ago. This time, I wasn't just a wife in the way; I was the one holding all the cards.

My bank account showed exactly $42.18, and my student loan notifications were flashing red. I lived in a sweltering Queens apartment with my Aunt Lydia, where the air was thick with the smell of stale frying oil and the constant threat of being homeless. Lydia handed me a grainy photo of a man twice my age and told me she had already "sold" me to him. He was a dry cleaner looking for a wife, and in exchange for my hand, he would pay off her credit cards and my debt. If I didn't show up for the date that night, my boxes would be on the curb by midnight. I arrived at the cafe in a state of panic, my selective mutism making it impossible to even breathe. In the crowded room, I accidentally sat at the wrong table. Instead of the man from the photo, I found myself facing Gerhard Holcomb—the cold, terrifyingly handsome billionaire whose family owned the very museum where I worked. He didn't send me away; instead, he studied my trembling hands and offered me a different deal: a two-year contract marriage, a two-million-dollar payout, and a strict clause forbidding any children. I signed the papers and moved into his Park Avenue penthouse, thinking I was finally safe. But when I went back to the old apartment to retrieve the only memento of my dead parents, Lydia lashed out, leaving me bleeding from a head wound. Gerhard’s retaliation was absolute—he had her arrested and her building foreclosed on within hours, claiming he was simply "protecting his assets." As I recovered in his silent, glass-walled home, I saw a call from a famous socialite flash on his phone, and a cold truth settled in my gut. I wasn't just a wife; I was a placeholder, a silent shield used to fend off the women from his past. I looked at the massive pink diamond on my finger and realized the silence I had lived in my whole life was about to become my most expensive prison. I had traded a life of poverty for a high-stakes game of shadows, and now I had to survive the man who claimed to own me.

He Thought I Was A Doormat, Until I Ruined Him

SHANA GRAY

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.
