Married to a billionaire by fate Chapter 1 The poor lifestyle

CHAPTER ONE

Mummy, I'm back. Can I get something to eat please? Charlotte said as she sat tiredly on the couch in the living room looking like someone who just ended a fight.

Oh my darling, you're back. How was work today?

I hope you didn't have any dispute with any of your customers today. Grace her mother said as she was cleaning her hand with a towel after washing dishes in the kitchen

I'm so tired mum,I need something to munch so bad, Charlotte said as she demonstrated with her hand like she was eating

Charlotte, I'm so sorry there's nothing available in the house right now, your father just called and promised to come back with something we would use to eat tonight, Grace said as she patted Charlotte with a sad expression on her face.

What do you mean mummy? I've been out there the whole day working tirelessly so I could bring something home at the end of the month. You told me I would eat when I was leaving in the morning but now...she couldn't finish her statement as she started crying.

With pity, her mother hugged and kept her head on her shoulder whispering in her ear,"I'm sorry my dear, it's not our fault, destiny chose this for us. Your sister has been out there with your father since without eating too and I'm very sure they'll bring something home for us. She couldn't help but also cry.

With sadness in her heart, Charlotte walked slowly to her room with multiple thoughts running through her mind.

Should I just run away from this house? Should I engage myself in dirty jobs so I can survive?

These thoughts were going through her mind when she suddenly heard a knock on her door.

Who is there? Charlotte said.

It's me, Charlotte. We are back. Amelia replied with fatigue visibly written in her voice tone.

You can go Amelia. I'll be there in a moment. Charlotte replied slowly

Welcome Dad.Charlotte said to her dad as she bowed her head.

Thank you Charlotte. What's wrong with you? Your countenance is down. Did you fight at work? Alfred, her father asked curiously.

No Dad, I'm fine. Charlotte bluffed

"Ahem", Grace cleared her throat as she interrupted. Can we eat now? She said

Oh yes,we can. Alfred said.

Alfred Smith works in a blacksmith forge in St Albans where he finds little to feed his family but they still struggle to survive as they depend also on the salary Charlotte gets at her workplace.

Dad, I'm tired of this lifestyle. Charlotte said, holding a cutlery in her hand. We can't continue to live like this dad, we'll die one day. Can't we just...

Just what? Alfred interrupted. What else do you want us to do? You want us to steal? Huh?

What do you want us to do?

Humm she's right dad. Amelia supportively said

We are tired of this wretchedness, we've turned into a laughing stock on the street,I can't take this anymore dad.

Listen you little rats,I can't because of money go and dig hell. If you're not fine with this lifestyle, get the fuck out of my house and find somewhere else to live. I'm trying after all. Alfred aggressively replied and left to sleep.

Mum,are we wrong? Charlotte said with a shaky voice.

No,my darlings. Your dad is only acting on emotions. I'll speak to him, just go to your bed and sleep. Grace said as she washed her hand in the sink.

Goodnight mum. Charlotte and Amelia echoed

Have a nice dream,my angels. Grace said as she blew kisses at them.

Alfred, you shouldn't have taken it personally with your daughters, you gave them the life they are living. They can't be wrong for asking for their rights. Grace said as she spreads her bedsheet

"Psst!,will you get on the bed and sleep?" Alfred hissed.

No, hubby listen to me,we have to think about what to do. We need to give these children the life they deserve. Grace insisted.

Okay, what do you want me to do? Alfred said as he sat upright on the bed.

Grace raised her head up looking at the ceiling as if someone was speaking to her from there.

Why don't you speak with your friend and see how he can help us? She said as she raised her eyebrows.

Who? Oliver? Alfred inquired

Oliver Astor is the richest man in the City of St Albans and a good friend of Alfred Smith,he owns many companies in the city inclusive of the one Charlotte works for but unknown to her.

Yes, Oliver. I believe as a good man he is,he should be able to do something to help us. Grace added.

Hmmm!Are you sure? Alfred sighed

Yes, hubby. I'm sure he'll do something to help us.She persuaded him.

Okay, thank you for always being there. Goodnight. Alfred said as he turned to sleep.

I love you hubby. Have a nice dream. Grace happily said as she also turned to sleep.

I went to the City Clerk’s office for a routine copy of my marriage license to finalize a trust fund audit. I expected a simple piece of paper, but the clerk’s pitying look told me my entire life was a lie. "The license was never finalized, Ms. Oliver. In the eyes of the state, you are single." The three-hundred-guest wedding at the Plaza and the Vogue features meant nothing. My husband, Gray Cooley, had intentionally filed the documents with a "procedural defect" so he could discard me without a legal divorce. Moments later, an iCloud invite titled "Our Little Secret" popped up on my screen. It was a photo of my best friend, Brylee, holding a positive pregnancy test at our Hamptons estate. Gray’s text to her was the final blow: "Happy anniversary, babe. This baby is the best gift. Once the trust unlocks today, we’re done with the charade." I soon discovered they were even stealing my career, reassigning my architectural masterpiece to Brylee while preparing my eviction notice. Gray's mother called me a "barren mule" in a leaked recording, mocking the infertility I suffered after saving Gray’s life in a construction accident. I wasn't a wife; I was a three-year placeholder used to secure his inheritance. How could the man I bled for treat me like a disposable prop? How could my best friend carry his child while pretending to comfort me through my darkest moments? The betrayal burned until it turned into a cold, hard stone of fury. I didn't cry. Instead, I walked into the penthouse of the Barretts, the Cooleys' most powerful rivals. I signed a marriage contract with Kane Barrett, the man the tabloids called the "Beast of Wall Street." "I want a wedding," I told his father, my voice steady and lethal. "Bigger than the one I had with Gray." If they wanted me gone, they would have to watch me become the woman who owns their world.

Six years ago, I was a naive girl sold by my father to the powerful Sanders estate, only to be tossed onto the streets after a brutal assault they labeled "marital infidelity." I fled the country pregnant and broken, hiding from the shadow of a husband I had never even met. Now, I’ve returned to New York with my triplets to sign the final divorce papers and disappear forever. But Archibald Sanders—the man I was told was a crippled recluse—intercepted us with the cold precision of a predator. He didn't see the woman his family destroyed; he saw a gold-digger who had shamed his name. His security team hunted us to a grimy motel, using tactical force to snatch my children away and drag me to his glass-walled empire. In his office, he loomed over me, demanding a DNA test and threatening to throw me in prison while my babies were lost to the foster system. He was convinced I’d cheated, yet he stared at my sons with a haunting confusion, unable to ignore the stormy blue eyes that were a perfect mirror of his own. I stood there, paralyzed by his scent—the sharp tang of rain and expensive leather that triggered the icy dread of my worst nightmares. How could he accuse me of betrayal when he felt exactly like the monster who had shattered my life in that dark hotel room? "I'll sign anything," I sobbed, "just give me my kids." But the game changed when my five-year-old son hacked the tower’s security, holding the skyscraper hostage to save me. In the chaos, a fragile, silent boy—Archibald’s secret son—wandered into the room and reached for me as if I were his missing soul. Archibald’s face turned to stone as he tore up the agreement and locked the doors. "Until I find out why my son is looking at you like that," he growled, "you aren't going anywhere."

For two years, I was the invisible force behind tech billionaire Kieran Douglas, convinced that our "private" romance was his way of protecting us from the tabloid spotlight. I managed his mergers, warmed his bed, and waited for a future that didn't exist. The illusion shattered at 6:00 AM when a Page Six alert debuted Kieran’s "real" romance with socialite Aspen Schneider. Before I could even process the betrayal, Kieran sent me a cold, professional text: "Order flowers for Aspen. Pink peonies. Her favorite." When I tried to walk away, my own mother called me a disgrace and threatened to lock my inheritance forever unless I married a sixty-year-old businessman to save her failing estate. At a high-society gala that same night, Aspen intentionally crushed my burned hand in front of the cameras, while Kieran stood by and dismissed me as a "mediocre assistant" who had overstayed her welcome. I stood in the cold New York rain, drenched in champagne and humiliation, realizing that every sacrifice I made for Kieran was a joke. I was a ghost in a penthouse that was never mine, discarded the moment his "soulmate" returned. To the world, I was just a placeholder whose time had run out. But Kieran forgot one thing: my father’s multi-million dollar trust fund unlocks the moment I legally marry. I didn't need love; I needed a signature and a shield. I walked into a discreet law firm and signed a marriage contract with a man I believed was the city’s most notorious, scandal-ridden playboy. I thought I was marrying a degenerate "beard" to buy my freedom and secure my revenge. I didn't realize the man who signed that paper wasn't a playboy at all, but Gaston Collins—the most powerful and dangerous man on Wall Street—and he had no intention of letting our fake marriage stay fake.

I lay paralyzed on stiff white sheets, a prisoner in my own skin, listening to the rain lash against the window like nails on a coffin. My father, Elmore Franco, didn't even look at my face as he checked his clipboard. He just listened to the steady, monotonous beep of the heart monitor-the only thing proving I was still alive. Without a hint of remorse, he pulled a pen from his pocket and signed the Do Not Resuscitate order. My stepmother, Ophelia, stepped out from behind him, wearing my favorite pearl necklace and smelling of cloying perfume. She leaned close to my ear to whisper the truth that turned my blood to ice. "It was the tea, darling. Just like your mother. A slow, tasteless poison." She chuckled as she revealed that my fiancé, Bryce, had a two-year-old son with my sister, Daniela. My inheritance had been funding their secret life for years, and now that the money was secure, I was an inconvenience they were finally scrubbing away. As my father yanked the power cord from the wall, the beeping died, and the darkness swallowed me whole. I was being murdered by my own flesh and blood, used as a bank account until I was no longer needed. I died in that sterile room, drowning in the realization that every person I ever loved was a monster who had been waiting for me to take my last breath. Then, I gasped. I woke up in a luxury hotel suite surrounded by silk sheets, five years in the past-the very morning of my wedding. Next to me lay Basile Delgado, the "Wolf of Wall Street" and my family's most dangerous enemy. In my first life, I ran from this room in a panic and lost everything. This time, I looked at the man who would eventually destroy my father's empire and decided to join him. "I'm not leaving, Basile. Marry me. Right now. Today."
