My husband, Easton, dragged me to a party for his ex-girlfriend, Kelly Holland. Our five-year marriage was a sham, a contract he'd signed to spite her after she left him. I was just the placeholder wife. During a game of "Seven Minutes in Heaven," he chose Kelly. When they emerged from the powder room, her lipstick was smeared, and a fresh hickey stained her neck. Later that night, Easton and Kelly stormed into our home. He accused me of stealing her multi-million dollar diamond necklace. He didn't believe me, even when I swore I was innocent. He called the police, who conveniently found the necklace in my handbag. He looked at me with disgust. "I never should have married you," he spat. "You're nothing but trash from the slums." I was arrested based on the word of the woman who set me up. My five years of quiet love and devotion meant nothing. The man I had secretly fallen for saw me as nothing more than a common thief. I spent the night in a cold holding cell. The next morning, after being bailed out, I took the SIM card from my phone, snapped it in two, and dropped it in the trash. It was over. I would make them pay. I would burn their entire world to the ground.

Chapter 1

The divorce papers arrived on a Tuesday. The crisp white envelope sat on the marble countertop, my name, Brooke Rollins, typed in a sterile font. Next to it was another name: Easton Spencer. My husband.

For five years, that title had felt like a costume I wore. It was a sham, a placeholder marriage he' d entered into to spite his socialite ex-girlfriend, Kelly Holland, after she' d publicly dumped him.

I stood in the corner of the lavish ballroom, a flute of champagne untouched in my hand.

Then I saw them. Kelly Holland, draped in a glittering silver dress, glided toward me. Her friends, a flock of equally polished women, trailed in her wake. The air grew thick with their expensive perfume and unspoken contempt.

"Brooke, darling," Kelly' s voice was smooth as silk, but her eyes held a familiar cruelty. "I almost didn' t recognize you. You clean up surprisingly well."

I didn' t smile. I just met her gaze. "Kelly."

One of her friends laughed, a high, tinkling sound. "Still so cold. I guess you can take the girl out of the factory town, but you can' t take the factory town out of the girl."

The words were meant to sting, but I' d heard them, or versions of them, a thousand times. They were nothing.

But Kelly knew where to aim. She leaned in, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper that was loud enough for everyone nearby to hear. "I saw your mother the other day. Still limping around from that factory accident, isn't she? It' s so tragic. You' d think with all of Easton' s money, you could have at least gotten her a decent prosthetic."

A hot, white rage flooded me. My mother was my line. The one thing in this world they couldn' t touch.

My hand moved before I could think. The crack of my palm against Kelly' s cheek echoed in the sudden silence.

Gasps rippled through the onlookers. Kelly' s head snapped back, a red mark blooming on her perfect skin. For a second, she looked stunned.

Then her eyes narrowed. With a vicious snarl, she grabbed a full glass of red wine from a passing tray and flung its contents at me.

The cold liquid soaked the front of my dress, a dark, ugly stain spreading across the pale fabric. It dripped onto the floor, pooling at my feet. I stood there, shivering and humiliated, the wine clinging to my skin like a second, shameful layer.

Suddenly, a presence was behind me. A large, expensive suit jacket was draped over my shoulders, shielding me from the staring eyes.

"What the hell is going on here?"

Easton' s voice was low and dangerous. I didn't have to turn around to know he was here. He always showed up at the most dramatic moments. His shirt was slightly untucked, and his hair was a mess, as if he' d run all the way here.

He stepped in front of me, a protective wall between me and the world.

He glared at Kelly, his jaw tight. "What did you do?"

Kelly' s face immediately crumpled. Tears welled in her eyes as she pointed a trembling finger at me. "Easton, she hit me! Look! For no reason at all, she just attacked me."

I could see the gears turning in his head, the old, familiar conflict. His loyalty to me, his wife, versus the deep, toxic pull of the woman he' d loved since childhood.

He didn't fall for it this time. Not completely. "Get out, Kelly. Now."

He grabbed my arm, his grip firm, and pulled me away from the scene, through the parted crowd, and out into the cool night air. We walked in silence to his car, the engine a low growl in the quiet parking garage.

Inside the car, he let out a frustrated sigh, running a hand through his already messy hair. He looked at me, his expression a mix of anger and something I couldn't place.

"Is today something important?" he asked, his voice rough.

My heart, which I thought had turned to stone, felt a small, painful throb. He' d forgotten.

"It was our anniversary, Easton," I said, my voice flat. "Yesterday."

He flinched. The guilt was plain on his face. "I' m sorry, Brooke. I... I' ll make it up to you. I' ll buy you anything you want."

That was Easton. Meticulous with gifts and grand gestures, a performance of a perfect husband. But emotionally, he was a black hole. He could remember to send flowers but forget the reason why. He was a man of breathtaking consideration and even more breathtaking cruelty.

Just as he was about to start the car, his phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen.

Kelly Holland.

I stood in the darkest corner of the Pierre Hotel’s ballroom, my cheap polyester dress itching against my skin while my wristband buzzed with a DARPA Priority Red alert. In front of the city’s elite, my fiancé Bryce Calloway took the stage, not to toast our future, but to publicly end our engagement and announce he was with my sister, Chloe. The room turned on me instantly, a hundred pairs of eyes pinning me down with pity and disgust as they physically backed away like I was contagious. When I returned home, my mother shattered a crystal vase at my feet, screaming that I was a humiliation and a "dropout" who didn't deserve a cent of the family fortune. Chloe and Bryce mocked me, laughing when I told them I had a mission with the National Security Agency, convinced I was either a pathological liar or a low-level criminal. They watched in horror as a black, unmarked military helicopter descended on our backyard to extract me, yet they still chose to believe I was being arrested for drug trafficking. They saw a pathetic girl who couldn't even parallel park, never realizing I was Dr. Nova Vance, the lead physicist behind the world's first successful fusion reactor. To secure funding for my research and gain a "fortress" of a name, I signed a thirty-day marriage contract with the arrogant billionaire Roman Knight. He treats me like a fraud, convinced I’m a gold-digger who failed out of college, while I quietly run global energy simulations from his guest bedroom. He has no idea that the "loser" he’s forced to live with is the same anonymous grandmaster who has been ruthlessly crushing him in online strategy games for months. "The contract is active," I told him, looking past his expensive suit. "But don't expect me to be your maid."

It was my 30th birthday, and I was all set to propose to Sarah, my girlfriend of five years, at the fanciest restaurant in the city. I had the ring, the perfect table, and a future all planned out. But as I waited, she walked in, not alone, but with another man – her colleague. And then, in a devastating twist, she got down on one knee and proposed to him, right there in front of everyone, as my world shattered. My mother called, wishing me a happy birthday, and confused when I could only whisper about the arranged marriage she' d mentioned. Sarah' s excited shouts of "She said yes!" echoed in the background as the entire restaurant applauded their engagement. Moments later, her text popped up: "Happy Birthday, Ethan! Sorry, got held up at work. On my way home now. I got you a cake!"-the lie a final stab. When she came home that night, full of excuses about how it was just a "career play" and a "fake engagement," I smelled his cologne on her. The lie was too much. I packed a single suitcase, leaving behind five years of a life that was nothing but a pretense. The next morning, at the office, the humiliation continued. Sarah and her fiancé, Mark, announced their engagement, and Mark took the promotion that should have been mine. Sarah told me I was fired, then orchestrated a cruel setup, framing me for stealing Mark' s Rolex. She publicly shamed me, slapped me across the face, and accused me of being a lowlife. Why had I given up everything for her? Why was she so intent on destroying me? With my world crumbling, I accepted an arranged marriage with Olivia Sterling, a woman whose calm, sharp eyes suggested a powerful intelligence, and who just might be my unexpected salvation.

For seventeen years, I was the crown jewel of the Kensington empire, the perfect daughter groomed for a royal future. Then, a cream-colored envelope landed in my lap, bearing a gold crest and a truth that turned my world into ice. The DNA test result was a cold, hard zero percent-I wasn't a Kensington. Before the ink could even dry, my parents invited my replacement, a girl named Alleen, into the drawing room and treated me like a trespasser in my own home. My mother, who once hosted galas in my honor, wouldn't even look me in the eye as she stroked Alleen's arm, whispering that she was finally "safe." My father handed me a one-million-dollar check-a mere tip for a billionaire-and told me to leave immediately to avoid tanking the company's stock price. "You're a thief! You lived my life, you spent my money, and you don't get to keep the loot!" Alleen shrieked, trying to claw the designer jacket off my shoulders while my "parents" watched with clinical detachment. I was dumped on a gritty sidewalk in Queens with nothing but three trunks and the address of a struggling laborer I was now supposed to call "Dad." I traded a marble mansion for a crumbling walk-up where the air smelled of exhaust and my new bedroom was a literal storage closet. My biological family thought I was a broken princess, and the Kensingtons thought they had successfully erased me with a payoff and a non-disclosure agreement. They had no idea that while I was hauling trunks up four flights of stairs, my secret media empire was already preparing to move against them. As I sat on a thin mattress in the dark, I opened my encrypted laptop and sent a single command that would cost my former father ten million dollars by breakfast. They thought they were throwing me to the wolves, but they forgot one thing: I'm the one who leads the pack.

I stood at my mother’s open grave in the freezing rain, my heels sinking into the mud. The space beside me was empty. My husband, Hilliard Holloway, had promised to cherish me in bad times, but apparently, burying my mother didn't fit into his busy schedule. While the priest’s voice droned on, a news alert lit up my phone. It was a livestream of the Metropolitan Charity Gala. There was Hilliard, looking impeccable in a custom tuxedo, with his ex-girlfriend Charla English draped over his arm. The headline read: "Holloway & English: A Power Couple Reunited?" When he finally returned to our penthouse at 2 AM, he didn't come alone—he brought Charla with him. He claimed she’d had a "medical emergency" at the gala and couldn't be left alone. I found a Tiffany diamond necklace on our coffee table meant for her birthday, and a smudge of her signature red lipstick on his collar. When I confronted him, he simply told me to stop being "hysterical" and "acting like a child." He had no idea I was seven months pregnant with his child. He thought so little of my grief that he didn't even bother to craft a convincing lie, laughing with his mistress in our home while I sat in the dark with a shattered heart and a secret life growing inside me. "He doesn't deserve us," I whispered to the darkness. I didn't scream or beg. I simply left a folder on his desk containing signed divorce papers and a forged medical report for a terminated pregnancy. I disappeared into the night, letting him believe he had successfully killed his own legacy through his neglect. Five years later, Hilliard walked into "The Vault," the city's most exclusive underground auction, looking for a broker to manage his estate. He didn't recognize me behind my Venetian mask, but he couldn't ignore the neon pink graffiti on his armored Maybach that read "DEADBEAT." He had no clue that the three brilliant triplets currently hacking his security system were the very children he thought had been erased years ago. This time, I wasn't just a wife in the way; I was the one holding all the cards.
