Ashes of Ambition Chapter 1

When Caiden Fowler had only seven days left to live, he begged Alexandra Clayton to give him a chance to make up for his regrets.

"Alexandra, the truth is, I've always loved Leyla," he said. "Now, at this point, I don't want to settle anymore. Can you sign the divorce papers and let me be with her?"

Yet, he was the one who had abandoned his wife and child, and now he was the one crying for reconciliation.

...

At Willow Haven Manor, a whip cracked through the air, striking the man kneeling in the courtyard.

Blood mixed with rainwater, pooling beneath Caiden's knees.

After what felt like an eternity, the sound of the whip finally stopped.

Caiden's body swayed as he slowly lifted his pale, bloodless face.

He looked toward the figure standing in the shadows under the corridor. "Alexandra, let these hundred lashes settle the debt of the eight years I deceived you," he said. "For the time I have left, I hope you won't disturb Leyla and me."

With that, he struggled to his feet and walked toward the gate.

Alexandra clenched her fists tightly upon hearing his words.

She never imagined that her husband of seven years would leave her like this.

"Caiden!" She took two steps after him, her voice heavy. "Aren't you afraid of losing everything, of your reputation crumbling?"

Caiden paused, then turned to meet her gaze, his voice calm. "Given how things are now, what do I have left to fear?"

Without another word, he walked away, leaving no trace of hesitation.

The gate opened and closed.

Alexandra tasted blood in her mouth, unsure if the wetness on her face was rain or tears.

After a moment, she called her lawyer. "Draft a divorce agreement," she said.

Then she instructed the household staff, "Pack up all of Mr. Fowler's belongings and move them to storage."

After finishing these tasks, Alexandra went upstairs.

She took down their wedding photo and tossed it into the fire.

The image of them, once so close, twisted and blurred in the flames.

Her vision blurred as well.

Caiden and Alexandra had been married for seven years, deeply in love.

Or so she thought, until that day, when she realized it was all a lie.

Three months earlier, Caiden went abroad on business and was kidnapped.

Though he escaped, he had been injected with a new, unknown toxin.

They tried everything to find an antidote, even funding a dedicated research lab.

But no matter what they did, there was no progress.

Despair crept into both their hearts.

Until that day, when the lab confirmed Caiden's body could only hold out for one more week.

That was when he came to Alexandra, begging for a chance to right his regrets.

"Alexandra, my heart has always belonged to someone else," he said. "With so little time left, I don't want to keep pretending. I hope you can let me go."

Only then did Alexandra realize she had always been his compromise.

The door clicked open.

Her assistant strode in with a stack of documents. "Ms. Clayton, we've gathered information on Leyla Morrison and her past with Mr. Fowler."

Alexandra flipped through the files.

Leyla and Caiden had once been lovers.

Leyla came from a humble background, while Caiden was the heir to a wealthy family.

Their love had faced fierce opposition from his family.

In the end, Caiden chose his family over Leyla, abandoning her.

Now, for Leyla, he was abandoning Alexandra.

Her assistant held out her phone. "Ms. Clayton, look at this."

Just half an hour earlier, Caiden had rented every LED billboard in the city to confess his love for Leyla.

"Leyla Morrison, I love you."

Those words burned Alexandra's eyes.

Once, Caiden had gone to similar lengths to profess his love for Alexandra.

He had said, "In this world, you're the only one worth this kind of effort."

Back then, everyone envied Alexandra for choosing the right man.

She gave a bitter smile.

"Ms. Clayton!" her assistant exclaimed suddenly, her voice bright. "The lab just sent word. They've decoded the toxin's molecular structure. With this, they'll likely develop an antidote soon. Mr. Fowler can be saved!"

Alexandra's heart skipped a beat, and she instinctively dialed Caiden's number.

Before she could speak, a woman's low, sharp scream came through the phone.

Then Caiden's voice, slightly breathless, answered. "What is it?"

Alexandra gripped the phone tightly, her voice cold. "Caiden, what are you doing?"

There was a pause on the other end. "Alexandra, I told you not to bother me anymore," he said.

The call ended.

The mechanical busy tone filled her ears. She took a deep breath and redialed.

But then she realized he had blocked her.

Alexandra put the phone down.

From Caiden and Leyla's history, it was clear.

Caiden was a cold, calculating man.

Now, facing death, he was willing to throw everything away.

Alexandra wiped away the tears that had fallen unnoticed and gave a hollow laugh, her gaze settling on the man in her phone's wallpaper.

Caiden Fowler.

If he found out he wasn't going to die, would he still be so reckless?

She would wait and see.

I thought I was waking up in the arms of Arthur, the man I loved. But as the morning light hit the Hamptons estate, the man buttoning his cuffs by the window turned around with eyes like chips of ice. It was Augustus Riddle, Arthur’s cruel younger brother, and I had just spent the night whispering confessions of love into the wrong man's ear. The night I thought was a beautiful beginning turned into a devastating nightmare. Instead of comfort, Gus treated me like a stain on his expensive carpet, scribbling a check for "services rendered" before shoving me into a dark service corridor to hide my existence from his brother. "How much does it cost to buy your silence?" He sneered, before leaving me barefoot in a torrential downpour while he drove away in a luxury Cadillac. Four years later, I am a struggling actress in Los Angeles, working double shifts as a barista just to keep the lights on. My life was finally stable until my roommate dragged me to a high-end dinner to meet her new "influential" boyfriend. The man sitting at the table, looking more arrogant and lethal than ever, was Augustus. He spent the entire night humiliating me, calling me a pathetic amateur and a social climber in front of my only friends. When I fled into the rain and collapsed on the sidewalk, skinning my knee until I bled, he watched from his car. He saw me clutching a plastic baggie containing the taped-together pieces of that four-year-old check—the only proof of my shame. He looked at me like roadkill, rolled up his window, and drove off into the dark. I couldn't understand why he was doing this. Why did he hate me enough to crush me, yet remember that I couldn't handle the smell of cigarette smoke? Why did he leave me bleeding in the street, only to send expensive medical supplies and coffee to my door the very next morning? "I'm moving out." I told my roommates, realizing that Gus Riddle didn't just want to destroy me; he wanted to haunt me. I grabbed my suitcase and walked out with eighty dollars to my name, finally ready to disappear into the city before he could burn the rest of my life to the ground.

I lived as the "scarred ghost" of the Stephens penthouse, a wife kept in the shadows because my facial burns offended my billionaire husband’s aesthetic. For years, I endured Kason’s coldness and my family's abuse, a submissive puppet who believed she had nowhere else to go. The end came with a blue folder tossed onto my silk sheets. Kason’s mistress was back, and he wanted me out by sunset, offering a five-million-dollar "silence fee" to go hide my face in the countryside. The betrayal cut deep when I discovered my father had already traded my divorce for a corporate bailout. My step-sister mocked my "trashy" appearance at a high-end boutique, while the sales staff treated me like a common thief. At home, my father threatened to cut off my mother's life-saving medicine unless I crawled back to Kason to beg for a better deal. I was the girl who took the blame for a fire she didn't start, the wife who worshipped a man who never looked her in the eye, and the daughter used as a human bargaining chip. I was supposed to be broken, penniless, and desperate. But the woman who stood up wasn't the weak Elease Finch anymore; she was Phoenix, a tactical predator with a $500 million secret. I signed the divorce papers without a single tear, walked past my stunned husband, and wiped the Finch family's bank accounts clean with a few taps on my phone. "Your money is dirty," I told Kason with a cold smile. "I prefer clean hands." The cage is open, the hunt has begun, and I’m starting with the people who thought a scar made me weak.

The heavy iron gates of the Wilderness Correction Camp groaned as they released me after three years of state-sponsored hell. I stood on the dirt road, clutching a plastic bag that held my entire life, waiting for the family that claimed they sent me there for "rehab." My brother, Brady, picked me up in a luxury SUV only to throw me out onto a deserted highway in the middle of a brewing storm. He told me I was a "public relations nightmare" and that the rain might finally wash the "stink" of the camp off me. He drove away, leaving me to limp miles through the mud on a snapped ankle. When I finally dragged myself to our family estate, my mother didn't offer a hug; she gasped in horror because my muddy clothes were ruining her Italian marble. They didn't give me my old room back. Instead, they banished me to a moldy gardener’s shack and hired a "babysitter" to make sure I didn't embarrass them further. My sister, Kaleigh, stood there in white cashmere, pretending to cry while clinging to her fiancé, Ambrose—the man who had once been mine. They all treated me like a volatile junkie, refusing to acknowledge that Kaleigh was the one who planted the drugs in my bag three years ago. They wanted to believe I was broken so they wouldn't have to feel guilty about the "wellness retreat" that was actually a torture chamber. I sat in the dark of that shed, feeling the cooling gel on the cigarette burns that covered my arms, and realized they had made a fatal mistake. They thought they had erased me, but I had returned with a roadmap of scars and a hidden satellite phone. At dinner, I didn't beg for their love. I simply rolled up my sleeves and showed them the price of their silence. As the wine spilled and the lies crumbled, I sent a single text to the only person I trusted: "I'm in. Let them simmer." The hunt was finally on.
