On the marble coffee table, the Beef Wellington had turned completely cold, the pastry soggy beneath a layer of congealed fat. Beside it sat an unopened bottle of Romanée-Conti. A sharp cramp twisted through her empty stomach, a physical reminder that this was the fifth consecutive wedding anniversary she had spent entirely alone.

She did not cry, nor did she lower her head to apologize as she had done for five years. Instead, she turned around and walked toward the private study, her back rigid, the hem of her dark robe cutting a sharp line through the air.

Leo clapped his hands by the sofa, cheering aloud.
