I came to Montclair Crown University to earn my scholarship and disappear into a better future. I didn't expect my past to be projected onto a giant screen in front of the entire university. One photograph. My mother standing beside Zayn Callahan's father-twenty-one years ago. I had never seen that photo in my life. Before I can even breathe, a priceless Callahan family heirloom disappears. And somehow, all the evidence points to me. The board wants me expelled. The students want me destroyed. Everyone except him. Zayn Callahan. Cold. Arrogant. Untouchable. The heir to the Callahan dynasty-and the one man who should hate me the most. Instead, he steps between me and his own family. "She's not the thief." I look at him, shaking. "How do you know?" His eyes never leave mine. "Because you're the reason they stole it in the first place." Suddenly, my scholarship is a lie. Someone is following me after class. My mother's name is being erased from the university archives. And the Callahans are hiding a secret that began the night I was born. To survive, I have to work with Zayn. Forced proximity. Fake dating to silence the scandal. Jealousy that feels far too real. The closer we get to the truth, the harder it becomes to pretend we hate each other. But Zayn is hiding something from me. Something about my mother. Something about why my scholarship was approved before I even applied. And when I finally discover what he knew all along, I'll have to choose between trusting the boy I was never supposed to fall for... or exposing the truth that could destroy his entire empire. I didn't come to Montclair Crown to fall for the Callahan heir. I came for a future. I just didn't know he would become my biggest scandal.
Montclair Crown University didn't look like a university.
It looked like someone had taken all the money in Valenne, melted it down, and poured it into marble floors, crystal chandeliers, and champagne towers I was too scared to walk past.
Which is exactly why I was standing in the corner, trying to become one with the curtain.
The Founder's Ball was supposed to be a welcome. For everyone else, it was. Girls in gowns that probably cost more than my mother's entire yearly salary floated past, laughing too loud, holding flutes of real champagne. Boys in tailored suits that fit like they were born in them.
And then there was me. Black dress from a sale rack two years ago, shoes that pinched, clutch that barely fit my student ID.
Scholarship kid. Everyone could tell.
"Okay, you are giving tragic heroine in the corner and it's not cute."
Lily appeared out of nowhere, two glasses in hand, her red dress impossible to miss. My roommate - the only person in this entire place who talked to me like I was a person and not a charity case.
She shoved sparkling water at me.
"You've been standing here for ten minutes looking like you want to jump out the window."
"I've been considering it," I muttered, tugging at my sleeve. "Do you know how much that chandelier costs? If I breathe wrong, they'll bill me."
"You earned your place here, Aria. You scored higher than half the legacy admits in this room. Stop acting like you snuck in."
I tried to smile. I really did. For four years I'd dreamed of this. The letter. The scholarship. Montclair Crown - the most exclusive university in the country. A ticket out. A future where my mom wouldn't have to work double shifts.
"This was supposed to be my fresh start," I whispered.
"It still is."
Before she could say anything else, the lights went out.
Not a flicker. Everything - the chandeliers, the wall sconces, the fairy lights around the stage - dead at once.
A beat of complete darkness.
Then nervous laughter.
"Okay, is this part of the presentation?" someone said near the stage.
The music stopped mid-note with an ugly scratch.
My hand tightened around Lily's arm instinctively.
Then the giant screen behind the podium - the one that had been playing the university's history - flickered. Once. Twice.
And lit up.
An old photograph filled the entire wall. Black and white. Grainy, like it had been scanned from an album.
A young man stood in the middle, maybe in his late twenties. Sharp suit. That kind of effortless arrogance you only get when you've never been told no.
His arm was around a woman.
I didn't care about him at first. I was about to look away.
Then I saw her face.
The cold spread from my chest to my fingertips so fast I forgot how to hold anything.
The glass slipped from my hand.
It hit the marble and shattered - loud in the silent ballroom. Water and glass everywhere.
"Aria?" Lily bent down, alarmed. "Hey, hey - what's wrong?"
I couldn't answer. I couldn't blink.
Because the woman in that photograph was my mother.
Not a woman who looked like her. It WAS her. Younger - twenty years younger - hair darker, face without the tired lines I knew, wearing a dress I'd never seen. Smiling in a way she never smiled anymore.
Her arm was linked with his like she belonged there.
My mother, who cleaned houses to pay our rent. Who told me she had never even left our town before I was born. Who had never once mentioned Montclair Crown or Valenne or anyone named Callahan.
Under the photograph, in gold letters, a crest appeared. Two lions. A crown.
*CALLAHAN ESTATE - 2004.*
The whispers started like a wave.
"Is that... is that Adrian Callahan?"
"That's Zayn's dad. When he was younger."
"Who's the woman with him?"
My knees felt like water. Twenty-one years ago. The date burned under the photo. I was born twenty-one years ago.
No. No, that couldn't mean what I thought it meant.
A second slide slammed onto the screen.
A document. A birth record? A property deed? I couldn't read it, the font was too small, but I saw the date again. And a name. Bennett.
Then chaos.
A man in a black suit vaulted onto the stage, barking into a radio. "Lock the doors. Nobody leaves the ballroom."
Heads turned. People gasped.
"What's happening?" Lily whispered, stepping in front of me protectively.
The man on stage pointed straight into the crowd. Straight at me.
"Miss Bennett. Aria Bennett. Security needs you to come with us. Now."
Every single head in a 500-person ballroom turned to stare at me.
My blood ran cold. "Me? Why?"
"We have camera footage placing you near the restricted Founder's Gallery tonight at 19:40. The Callahan family vault was opened. An heirloom worth over seven figures is missing."
"I have never been near any gallery! I've been here the whole time - Lily, tell them -"
"I've been with her the whole night!" Lily shouted.
The guard wasn't listening. Two more guards were already pushing through the crowd toward me.
And then another voice. Low. Calm. The kind of calm that makes everyone else shut up.
"Search her bag."
Silence fell so fast it hurt my ears.
At the top of the grand marble staircase, a figure had appeared.
I knew him from the website, from every gossip post on the campus forum.
Zayn Callahan.
The heir. Adrian Callahan's only son. The boy who technically owned the building we were standing in.
Black suit, white shirt open at the collar, dark hair falling slightly over his forehead like he didn't care. He looked bored, and furious at the same time. Like this entire ball was beneath him.
He started coming down the stairs. Slowly. People parted without him having to say a word.
He didn't look at the crowd. His eyes - dark grey, unreadable - found me through the mess of broken glass and stares.
For one weird, suspended second, he just looked at me. At my shaking hands. At my cheap dress. At my face.
Something flickered there. I couldn't name it.
One guard reached me and grabbed my little black clutch. I was too frozen to fight.
He flipped it open and dumped everything onto a nearby table.
My cracked phone. Lip balm. Student ID card that said BENNETT, ARIA - SCHOLARSHIP. A small notebook.
And then his hand paused.
He reached in again, deeper. Frowned.
When he pulled his hand out, he was holding something that definitely was not mine.
Black velvet. Folded.
He unwrapped it.
The entire front row gasped.
A pendant. Silver, heavy, old. In the center, a dark blue stone that caught the light even in the dim emergency lighting. And carved around it, the same crest from the screen.
The Callahan crest.
"Oh my god," someone whispered. "That's the Founder's Eye. That's the missing heirloom."
"It's in her bag!"
"She stole it! The scholarship girl stole it!"
The shouting started. Phones came up - dozens of them - recording me, my face, the pendant. Flashes.
My scholarship. My degree. My mother who trusted me to not mess this up.
Gone. All of it, gone in ten seconds.
"No - no, that's not mine! I've never seen that before in my life, I swear, someone put that there -"
The guard held it up toward the staircase. "Mr. Callahan. We found it."
Zayn had reached the bottom now.
He took the pendant from the guard without looking at it. His fingers brushed the stone once, almost absently.
Then he looked at me.
Up close, he was taller. Sharper. And his expression wasn't angry anymore. It was tense. Like he'd just put two and two together and hated the answer.
His gaze dropped to my student ID. To my name. Then back to the photograph still frozen on the giant screen - my mother smiling next to his father.
Realization hit his face like a slap.
He stepped directly in front of me, so close I could smell his cologne, so close the crowd couldn't hear what he said next if he lowered his voice.
But he didn't lower his voice.
He turned his head toward his own security team, toward the entire ballroom watching, and said in a voice cold enough to freeze the room,
"She's not the thief."
