When life burned her world to ashes, she chose to bloom. After a childhood tragedy and years of abuse under her aunt's control, Kiera Sinclair never imagined her freedom would come disguised as another prison; a forced marriage to the cold and powerful billionaire, Ryan Montenegro in place of her cousin. Their union, born from deceit and desperation, begins as a battlefield. Ryan believes Kiera is part of a plot against him, while she silently carries scars from a past he cannot begin to understand. But as walls crumble and truth peeks through the cracks, their hatred gives way to something dangerously tender. Through the trials, Kiera grows stronger, learning to navigate the world of wealth, manipulation, and love with courage and self-assurance. Just as love dares to grow, Luciana Salvador; Ryan's actual lover and the unstable daughter of Sandra Montenegro's late friend burns with a vengeance when she realises Ryan's closeness with Keira yet she only let him marry Keira so she could bore him a child through surrogacy and then divorce her and come back to her. Her obsession turns deadly, her lies spark chaos, and her darkness threatens to consume them all. Luciana secretly aligns with Alex, forming a dangerous partnership where Alex manipulates situations to pressure Kiera, while Luciana fuels Ryan's emotional turmoil and spreads deception, making them a formidable, intertwined threat. Caught between revenge, heartbreak, and buried family secrets, Kiera must decide: will she rise from the ruins or let the past destroy what's left of her heart?

A Rose Among Ashes Chapter 1 Drawn to the past

Kiera's POV

The world holds still while I hit the ground. One second, I am racing down to meet Jason, a painting of him clutched in my hands, desperate for my best friend to take a look at it, and the next, everything halts suddenly.

My pulse skips at the sound of a bell clanging in the hallway, causing me to freeze, for the last three steps to become one to me. My vision blurs the minute my body lands on the ground. The world begins to spin from where I lie, helpless.

I can't make out what is happening. All the sounds around me fade into the background, and all I can focus on is the intense pain coursing through me.

It shoots up my body like wildfire, pulling me in and out of consciousness. Someone screams in the distance, just as people gather around me.

"Call 911!"

It is too loud, piercing through the hollowness in my mind. My eyes sting, and I sink my teeth into my lips, stopping the tears from falling down my face. My parents have always said to be strong even in the hardest moments.

I am going to be strong.

Silence fills the car on the way to the hospital. Miss Clara, the housekeeper, holds onto my hands for the whole fifteen minutes. I feel her there, squeezing lightly. Her warmth envelopes me, and in that split second, I think everything is going to be fine.

Just because it reminds me of my mum.

But my Mom isn't around, and all of this is just in my head.

***

I have always hated the smell of the hospital, that sickening smell of antiseptic clinging to every corner. The bright lights and white walls usher me in, yet they leave such a scar in my memory, as if dredging something that I have forgotten.

Someone is wheeled into the ER. I take in the blood pooling at the spot where there should be a foot, and I resist the urge to gag.

A young doctor saunters into the room I am wheeled into, his eyes scanning my body before moving closer to my eyes.

"They are glossy," he murmurs to himself, as if I were not in the same room as him. But that is the thing. I try to raise my hands, to force my lips to move, but nothing works.

Nothing at all.

"Who brought her in?" He yells, turning around. Someone falls out of the hallway. Someone I can barely recognize. I search for the housekeeper from the visible part of the hallway, but the door gets slammed immediately, and I feel dread seeping in.

But suddenly, everything fades.

Or changes, depending on the way you look at it.

The doctor pulls out into the hallway, and in his place, Clara walks in. My eyes narrow when I take a look at my homeschool teacher. She has a huge smile on her face as she sits on the side of the bed.

"The doctor said you will be discharged later today," she murmurs, then lifts the covers off my legs. "They look better, don't you think?"

There is nothing wrong with my legs, and I want to tell her that. But I nod instead, allowing myself to feel the ease of the moment.

"Your parents and older brother are on their way here," she speaks excitedly, pushing even closer. "Do you want to speak with them?"

I nod again, like a child, desperate for the arms of her parents. Clara retrieves a phone from her pocket and dials a number before handing it over to me. It is summer, yet outside, the rain hits heavier on the pavement, like a sharp crack of glass.

It traveled in through the windows, the smell of iron and wet soil. I feel it tease my brain. A migraine comes along, but because I do not want to lose the moment, I desperately hold on to it.

Their faces fill up the screen at the first ring, and fresh tears sting the corners of my eyes. My older brother pushes his head in from the back seat, his eyes dropping at the sight of me.

"Are you alright, baby?" My mom asks. She tries to keep her expression steady, but the worry in her tone betrays her. I shake my head, promising her that I am fine.

Still, I can't talk. I can't feel my lips.

"We will be there soon." My mother's voice echoes through the phone, sounding like something far away, in time and location.

But suddenly, it all changes, and my whole life is shattered from the very beginning.

The screen flickers as thunder strikes in the distance. I hear the sound of crashing, of glass breaking against each other, of metal crushing. I hear my brother screaming my name, that heart-wrenching sound washing through me.

This is the point at which the screaming ends, at least from what my memory serves me. But right now, it is different.

It continues, but through my own lips.

"Mom!" I thrash hard on the bed, kicking the sheets, needing to be out of here. "Mom! Dad! Christian! No! No! No! Please! I killed them!"

The whole room shifts as the doctor rushes in, closely followed by his team. Clara strangely disappears from my side, along with the phone, which was still pressed against my ear. My fists move next, thrown into the air. They push me back into the bed, their murmurings following.

"Hallucination," I hear one of them say as my wrists are tied to the posts of the bed. "Something brutal from her past."

"I killed them!" I wail, allowing the tears to flow down my face. "If I hadn't called, they would still be fine."

"She needs to be sedated."

"Careful," the doctor murmurs. "She is pregnant and we can't let anything happen to the baby. Her husband's explicit instructions."

Lara appears in the doorway, along with Alex, the man I have been married to for the last year.

And I realize in that moment that I was transported to that day, seventeen years ago.

I was four months pregnant, weighing over two hundred pounds, and my heart was failing from experimental treatments forced on me as a child. My doctor looked at me with clinical detachment and told me I was in a death sentence: if I kept the baby, I would die, and if I tried to remove it, I would die. Desperate for a lifeline, I called my father, Francis Acosta, to tell him I was sick and pregnant. I expected a father's love, but all I got was a cold, sharp blade of a voice. "Then do it quietly," he said. "Don't embarrass Candi. Her debutante ball is coming up." He didn't just reject me; he erased me. My trust fund was frozen, and I was told I was no longer an Acosta. My fiancé, Auston, had already discarded me, calling me a "bloated whale" while he looked for a thinner, wealthier replacement. I left New York on a Greyhound bus, weeping into a bag of chips, a broken woman the world considered a mistake. I couldn't understand how my own father could tell me to die "quietly" just to save face for a party. I didn't know why I had been a lab rat for my family’s pharmaceutical ambitions, or how they could sleep at night while I was left to rot in the gray drizzle of the city. Five years later, the doors of JFK International Airport slid open. I stepped onto the marble floor in red-soled stilettos, my body lean, lethal, and carved from years of blood and sweat. I wasn't the "whale" anymore; I was a ghost coming back to haunt them. With my daughter by my side and a medical reputation that terrified the global elite, I was ready to dismantle the Acosta empire piece by piece. "Tell Francis to wash his neck," I whispered to the skyline. "I'm home."

I lay paralyzed on stiff white sheets, a prisoner in my own skin, listening to the rain lash against the window like nails on a coffin. My father, Elmore Franco, didn't even look at my face as he checked his clipboard. He just listened to the steady, monotonous beep of the heart monitor-the only thing proving I was still alive. Without a hint of remorse, he pulled a pen from his pocket and signed the Do Not Resuscitate order. My stepmother, Ophelia, stepped out from behind him, wearing my favorite pearl necklace and smelling of cloying perfume. She leaned close to my ear to whisper the truth that turned my blood to ice. "It was the tea, darling. Just like your mother. A slow, tasteless poison." She chuckled as she revealed that my fiancé, Bryce, had a two-year-old son with my sister, Daniela. My inheritance had been funding their secret life for years, and now that the money was secure, I was an inconvenience they were finally scrubbing away. As my father yanked the power cord from the wall, the beeping died, and the darkness swallowed me whole. I was being murdered by my own flesh and blood, used as a bank account until I was no longer needed. I died in that sterile room, drowning in the realization that every person I ever loved was a monster who had been waiting for me to take my last breath. Then, I gasped. I woke up in a luxury hotel suite surrounded by silk sheets, five years in the past-the very morning of my wedding. Next to me lay Basile Delgado, the "Wolf of Wall Street" and my family's most dangerous enemy. In my first life, I ran from this room in a panic and lost everything. This time, I looked at the man who would eventually destroy my father's empire and decided to join him. "I'm not leaving, Basile. Marry me. Right now. Today."

The heavy thud of the release stamp was the only goodbye I got from the warden after five years in federal prison. I stepped out into the blinding sun, expecting the same flash of paparazzi bulbs that had seen me dragged away in handcuffs, but there was only a single black limousine idling on the shoulder of the road. Inside sat my mother and sister, clutching champagne and looking at my frayed coat with pure disgust. They didn't offer a welcome home; instead, they tossed a thick legal document onto the table and told me I was dead to the city. "Gavin and I are getting engaged," my sister Mia sneered, flicking a credit card at me like I was a stray dog. "He doesn't need a convict ex-fiancée hanging around." Even after I saved their lives from an armed kidnapping attempt by ramming the attackers off the road, they rewarded me by leaving me stranded in the dirt. When I finally ran into Gavin, the man who had framed me, he pinned me against a wall and threatened to send me back to a cell if I ever dared to show my face at their wedding. They had stolen my biotech research, ruined my name, and let me rot for half a decade while they lived off my brilliance. They thought they had broken me, leaving me with nothing but an expired chapstick and a few old photos in a plastic bag. What they didn't know was that I had spent those five years becoming "Dr. X," a shadow consultant with five hundred million dollars in crypto and a secret that would bring the city to its knees. I wasn't just a victim anymore; I was a weapon, and I was pregnant with the heir they thought they had erased. I walked into the Melton estate and made an offer to the most powerful man in New York. "I'll save your grandfather's life," I told Horatio Melton, staring him down. "But the price is your last name. I'm taking back what's mine, and I'm starting with the man who thinks he's marrying my sister."
