FENRIR'S REBIRTH THE ALPHA'S FORBIDDEN QUEEN Chapter 1 THE REJECTED BRIDE

The Rejected Bride

The air in the Great Hall was thick with the scent of jasmine and, for Evangeline, the suffocating stench of impending doom. She stood at the edge of the dais, her lace gown feeling more like a shroud than a wedding dress.

Lucius stood before her, his broad shoulders squared, his gaze fixed not on her, but on the entrance where Cassandra stood, draped in silk that clung to her curves like a second skin.

"Lucius?" Evangeline whispered, her voice trembling. "What is the meaning of this?"

Lucius didn't turn around. He signaled for the music to stop. The silence that followed was heavy, punctuated only by the nervous shuffling of the pack members.

"I can't do it," Lucius said, his voice ringing out with casual, brutal indifference. "I'm not spending the next hundred years shackled to a girl who doesn't even have a wolf. It's pathetic, really."

A ripple of laughter surged through the crowd. Someone shouted, "Check the trash bin, she might find her dignity there!"

Evangeline felt the heat rise to her cheeks. She looked at him, searching for the man who had promised her the stars just last week. "You're really doing this? Right here? In front of everyone?"

"Don't make a scene, Evie," Lucius drawled, waving a hand dismissively as he stepped toward Cassandra. "It's embarrassing. You're a placeholder, and frankly, your seat is needed by someone of actual value."

Cassandra smirked, stepping into the light. "Sorry, honey. But nature intended for the strong to mate, and you're just... missing the hardware."

"You're a real piece of work, Cassandra," Evangeline spat, though her heart felt like it had been shredded by a blunt blade.

"And you're a nobody," Cassandra giggled, leaning into Lucius. "Go on, get out of here before the guards drag you out. I want to start the real party."

Evangeline stumbled back. The humiliation was a physical weight, crushing the air from her lungs. She looked toward the back of the room and saw Briar, her only friend, standing with a look of pure, terrified pity.

Briar pushed through the crowd, grabbing Evangeline's arm. "Come on, let's get you out of here. You don't need this trash."

"I have nothing left, Briar," Evangeline murmured as they retreated to the servant's quarters. "My parents' house is forfeit, my standing is gone. I'm a wolf-less freak in a pack of predators."

"So leave," Briar said, shoving a moth-eaten satchel into her hands. "Take what you can. My stash of gold is in the lining. Don't look back."

"Where will I go?" Evangeline asked, trembling.

"Anywhere but here. This place is rot, Evie. Lucius isn't a king; he's a bully with a crown." Briar grabbed a heavy cloak and wrapped it around her. "Go. Run until your lungs burn. It's the only way you survive."

Evangeline took one last look at the room where her life had ended. She felt the tears drying into salt-streaked paths on her face. "You're right. I'm done being the punchline."

The walk to the edge of the pack territory felt like a march to the gallows, but with every step beyond the boundary line, the air grew colder, wilder, and free of the suffocating scent of her pack. She crossed the threshold, the dense, gnarled trees of the Dark Woods looming like skeletal fingers against the moonlit sky.

She kept walking until her feet bled, the biting frost of the forest floor gnawing at her skin. The adrenaline that had carried her away from the hall began to dissipate, leaving behind a hollow, aching void in her chest. She collapsed against the rough bark of an ancient oak, her breath hitching in ragged gasps.

"This is it," she whispered into the darkness, a bitter, hysterical laugh bubbling up in her throat. "The great wolf-less Evangeline, frozen in a ditch."

Suddenly, the cold didn't matter. A searing, white-hot agony erupted in her veins, as if liquid fire had been injected into her marrow. She clawed at her own arms, her skin flushed, her vision blurring as the world turned a deep, impossible shade of violet.

She let out a scream that didn't sound human-a sound that vibrated with the raw, untamed power of the earth itself. As her eyes snapped open, they didn't reflect the pale moonlight. They glowed with an intense, haunting, violet luminescence, lighting up the dark forest around her.

She wasn't a wolf-less girl anymore. She was something else entirely.
