Sold to the cursed Lycan King as a blood sacrifice? Check. His curse melts every hand that touches him - except mine. Check. Now the whole court wants my secret, my blood... and my head? Triple check. Ayra was born wolfless - the disgrace of the Silverclaw Pack. On her eighteenth birthday, her fated mate rejected her in front of the entire pack, and her own father sold her to the monster king rumored to have slaughtered his entire royal court. They expected her to die within a night. But when King Kairos grabbed my throat, ready to snap it - his burning skin healed. Because my curse was never a curse at all. I am a Moon-daughter, the last living bloodline blessed by the goddess herself. My touch can heal the dying... or stop a heart mid-beat. Now the king who was never supposed to survive will do anything to keep me. My perfect sister will do anything to steal my power. And the mate who threw me away is on his knees at the palace gates, begging me to come back. Too bad for all of them. The king has already marked me as HIS.

Rejected and Sold to the Cursed Lycan King Chapter 1 Rejected at the Moon Ceremony

They say the moment you meet your fated mate, the world goes quiet. Birds stop singing. The wind holds its breath. Your wolf - that wild, beautiful thing inside your chest - finally lifts her head and howls *home*.

Here's what they don't tell you.

They don't tell you what happens when the world goes quiet because two hundred people just stopped to watch you get destroyed.

"Ayra Silverclaw."

Kellan's voice carried across the full Moon Ceremony like a blade dragged over stone. He stood on the dais in his ceremonial white, the future Alpha of Silverclaw Pack, and he didn't even try to keep the disgust out of his face.

"I, Kellan Rowan, reject you, Ayra Silverclaw, as my mate and as my Luna."

The words hit me like a physical blow. Somewhere deep in my chest, in the hollow place where my wolf should have lived, something cracked.

Not that anyone could hear it. I was born wolfless. The pack's favorite joke for eighteen years: *the Alpha's daughter with an empty chest.*

The crowd didn't gasp. Gasping would have meant surprise. Instead, two hundred pairs of eyes went bright with appetite. The kind of hunger people only show when they've been waiting for a show.

"I need you to say it back." Kellan's jaw tightened. "The bond requires your acceptance. You know the law."

Say it back. Accept the rejection. Cut the last thread tying me to the only future I'd ever been promised.

I looked up at the boy I'd loved since I was twelve. The boy who used to sneak me honeycakes from the kitchen. The boy who had kissed me behind the training hall three weeks ago and whispered, *when you turn eighteen, I'm going to make you my Luna in front of everyone.*

My eyes found the girl standing three steps behind him.

Cerise. My perfect older sister. Her hand rested on Kellan's arm, and her smile was the softest thing in the whole moonlit square.

Three weeks ago, she'd been sent to Aunt Helda's, two territories east.

Two weeks ago, she came home early.

Kellan started avoiding my eyes the very next day.

"So that's how it is," I said. My voice didn't shake. I'd like to remember that. Whatever else the Moon Ceremony took from me, my voice didn't shake. "You couldn't even tell me to my face, Kellan. You had to do it with an audience and a speech."

"I did it with an audience," he said quietly, "because a pack needs to see its Alpha make clean decisions."

*A pack needs to see.* That was the lesson every Silverclaw child learned before they could walk. The pack comes first. The bloodline comes first. And Ayra - wolfless, curse-marked, embarrassing Ayra - comes last.

"Ayra." My father stepped forward, and the crowd hushed. Alpha Godric Silverclaw had a presence like a storm front - all pressure and cold air. "Accept the rejection."

"Dad-"

"You will accept the rejection," he said, "because it's already done. The arrangement is made."

The words dropped into the square and rolled around like something loose in a metal box.

*Arrangement.*

"What arrangement?" I asked.

My father didn't look at me. He looked at the eastern gate, where the mist had started rolling in - thick and wrong, black as ink even under the full moon. Beyond that mist lay a kingdom every map in our packhouse marked with the same three words: *Do Not Enter.*

"For three years," my father said, "the Cursed Court has paid Silverclaw a standing tribute for one thing only. A healer's bloodline. Your grandmother's bloodline." His eyes finally came to me, and there was nothing in them. No apology. No father. Just arithmetic. "The king's curse has gotten worse. The court demanded the offering be delivered on the night of a full moon."

The cold walked up my spine one vertebra at a time.

"What offering?" My voice came out small. "Dad. What offering?"

"The King is dying," my father said. "Every hand that touches him burns. His curse has killed six priestesses, two physicians, and one royal healer sent by the Southern Alliance. His brother has promised our pack a generation of protection and triple tribute if the king survives the year." He paused, and for one moment - one stupid, human moment - something that looked almost like regret crossed his face. "Your touch doesn't burn, Ayra. It was the only thing of value you had."

The square went very quiet.

Then Cerise laughed. Just one bright note of it, quickly smothered behind her hand, but in the silence it rang like a bell.

"You're selling me." I stared at my father. "You're selling me to the monster king."

"The Lycan King is not a monster. He's a dying king with a standing agreement."

"He melted the last healer's *skin off.*"

"Rumor," my father said. "The Southern healer was badly trained. Your grandmother trained you herself for a reason. If anyone can survive him-"

"Survive him?" A laugh tore out of me, ugly and high. "You keep saying *survive* like it's my job. Like I'm a treaty. Like I'm - what, a *tribute*?"

"You," my father said, "are a daughter who was born empty in a pack that needed an heir. You have eaten Silverclaw's food for eighteen years and given it nothing. Tonight you will finally pay your debt."

Two hundred people heard it. Two hundred people would carry it home to their own kitchens by morning. *The Alpha sold the wolfless one to the Cursed Court.* By the winter solstice, it would be a bedtime story.

*I will finally pay my debt.*

Funny thing about a heart. When it breaks, you'd expect noise. What I got instead was a strange, ringing calm, like the world had gone underwater. I straightened my spine. Lifted my chin. Every etiquette lesson Cerise ever mocked me for, deployed at last.

"I accept your rejection, Kellan Rowan," I said, and watched him flinch at how steady I was. "You're not my mate. You're not anyone's mate. A mate wouldn't have folded the moment things got hard."

"I did what's right for my future pack," Kellan said, but his voice had gone flat, and he couldn't hold my eyes. Coward. Even now. *Coward to the last.*

"You did what was easy for a boy who wants to be called Alpha." I turned to Cerise, and I gave her my sweetest smile. "Enjoy him, sister. When he's bored of perfection, he'll do to you exactly what he did to me. He'll just be too proud to say it out loud."

"Enough." My father's hand closed on my arm like a shackle. "Guards. Deliver the tribute."

Two guards. Not escort - *deliver*, like I was a crate. The crowd parted for us the way water parts around a sinking stone. I kept my chin up the entire walk across the square, past the honey cake stall where Kellan bought my favorites, past the well where I'd wished on the autumn moon when I was seven and stupid and still believed the goddess gave every wolf a place.

At the eastern gate, the black mist waited. Up close it wasn't mist at all. It moved like something breathing. Old stories said the Lycan King had burned his own court to ash on the night of his coronation - servants, guards, priests, his own family - and the mist was all that remained of them, still looking for a way back in.

Nobody who crossed it had ever carried a tale back out.

The guard assigned to walk me in was young. Younger than Kellan. He wouldn't look at me, and his hand shook as he opened the gate.

"Walk fast," he whispered. "Don't stop for anything you hear in there. And, um." He swallowed. "Nobody's ever lasted the night. I'm sorry. I just - I wanted to say it to someone. That it isn't fair."

*It isn't fair.* The first kind words I'd heard all day, from a stranger, on a death march.

"Thank you," I said.

Then I walked through the black mist, and the world behind me - my pack, my father, my whole empty, useless, eighteen-year-long life - disappeared like it had never existed at all.

The mist was cold and it tasted like metal. It whispered. I didn't stop walking.

And when I came out the other side, I understood why no one ever talked about the Cursed Kingdom.

It wasn't the dark. It wasn't the dead gardens, or the palace that rose up against the moon like a row of black teeth.

It was the silence.

The whole kingdom - every tower, every street, every window - utterly, perfectly silent. Like a place holding its breath.

Like a place waiting for me.

"Highness, you shouldn't be out here." A voice. An old man in priest's robes stood beneath the gate, staring at me with wide, wild eyes. He wasn't talking to me.

He was talking past me - to the mist itself.

And then he saw me, and his face went white as bone.

"Moon-daughter," he breathed. "The goddess sent a *moon-daughter*."

Behind me, the mist sighed shut.

Somewhere deep in the palace, something that had been silent for three years began to scream.
