HER SHADOWED PAST Chapter 1 THE BEGINNING

Like every other night, Jacklyn woke up from her nightmare.

The same dream,

The same strange people,

The ones she'd seen for almost all her life.

She got up from her bed and put on the table lamp.

The florescence light evolved the room,

"Another night, another nightmare." She sighed to herself as she got up and stumbled to get water.

Her study table was still filled with unfinished works from last night,

The cup of unfinished already cold coffee was still there.

It was just four thirty am and she has like an hour extra before she goes for her morning jog.

Instead of lying back on the bed,

She took the glass of water and went to the table to probably finish up her work.

Jacklyn Chisholm is a twenty three year old girl who works as a Forensics Photographer at the NYPD ( New York Police Department).

Her parents were Adam and Linda Chisholm and her younger brother Ed Chisholm.

Both parents live in Southern Manhattan at their old but gorgeous family home while she moved out to Brooklyn after she dropped out of college.

She decided to work at the NYPD after taking intense Crime Analysis Education for two years, majoring in Forensic Photography. A new case came in yesterday morning and she'd taken photos of the crime scene.

She was still trying to find evidence for a murder to case to who the murderer is.

The deceased was a twelve year old boy,

By autopsy report that came later the day shows that the boy was injected with overdosed of propane from his left arm.

He was also given a second degree burn on his back and a metal was stabbed on his back too.

She was so perplexed at the report,

Who's so cruel to kill a twelve year old in such gruesome way?

The Wall Street is getting more dangerous for it's inhabitant, especially for children and teens,

Not talking of the youths.

Drugs everywhere,

Killing and illegal deals.

The police have also lock downed the drug path by arresting the Drug Lord of the Walls over twenty years ago.

The man Big Ray was arrested when a woman, Cynthia Smithson blew up their cover,

The woman died in an explosion on her New Yorkshire house a few days after the court verdict but Big Ray was arrested. Thinking it would become better after Big Ray's arrest,

It became worst,

Crimes everywhere,

Kids going high on drugs and killing,

It was gruesome.

Jacqueline found this cruel and those was the main reason she'd taking the job.

She loves anything photo,

From taking photos to investigating crimes behind photos taken,

She knew for once this was her calling.

She open the files and stared at it for awhile,

"Name: Baron Devaski

Age: Twelve years old...

"Gosh!

I can't do this now." She left the file and rested her head on the table.

It was Friday and she would be helping her neighbor, Stacey take her son to school.

The woman had gone for an art exhibition in Rhodes Island and won't be back till Monday morning,

So she pleaded Jacklyn to help her take care of her five year old son, Bruce till she returns.

She got up from the bed and went to the spare room to check on the boy,

He was still soundly asleep.

She nodded and quietly left the room,

She went back to hers and got herself ready for her morning run,

"It's no big deal if I go earlier than usual." She tightened the laces of her trainers and left the room. Jacklyn walked out of the building towards her car.

She was trying to get her neighbor's son to school then drive herself to work when her phone rang.

Amidst the rush and constant calling of the little boy Bruce,

She took the call,

"Hello who's this?" She asked as she saw the unfamiliar number.

"Hello.

Is this Jacklyn Chisholm?" The unfamiliar voice asked,

"Yes, I'm Jacklyn Chisholm.

Any problem?" She asked the caller,

"Yes,

Your father had gotten into an accident with his truck and has been rushed to New York City Hospital." The caller informed her and her phone dropped on the floor,

Luckily, it didn't shattered.

"Aunt what's it?" Bruce asked when he noticed she wasn't herself again,

He shook her hard,

"Hello,

Miss can you still hear me?" The caller asked

" Aunty Jack." He called her again,

She came back to her senses.

Bruce had already picked up the phone,

"Aunty, your phone." Bruce said to her as he handed the phone to her,

She slowly collected the phone from him.

"Hello Miss,

Are you there?" The caller asked again,

"Yes,

I'm still here.

Which hospital did you say he was admitted in?" She asked the man,

"Lennox Hills." The caller replied her,

"Okay,

Thanks, I'll be there soon." She hung up the call immediately,

"Bruce, we'll have to hurry up to your playschool,

I have an emergency to attend to." She said to the boy,

The boy complied immediately and stayed calm while she strapped him in her two sitter baby blue Camaro.

With great speed, she drove to Bruce's playschool which wasn't very far from her house,

"Bruce, I might be late to pick you up later, so you'll to stay with your teacher for a bit longer time." She said to the boy as he got out from her car,

"Okay aunt Jack,

I promise I'm going to be a good boy and won't disturb my teachers." The boy said to her,

She nodded and kissed him goodbye. Immediately the boy left,

She navigated her car and headed for the hospital,

"I'll have to call to tell them I'll be late,

She fished out her phone from her handbag and dialed Maxwell's number.

Maxwell was her colleague and also the closest person to her.

She doesn't keep friends for reason best unknown to her.

Yeah,

She doesn't know why but she knows she's not a type that keep friends.

Max's number going through,

" Max please pick up." she cried as she drove hysterically,

Max wasn't picking up,

"Should I call Harry?" She asked herself,

Harry's her colleague too and has been throwing sexual advances at her for quite a long time while she kept rejecting his advances.

He was a ladies man,

A player with very sweet mouth,

He's every lady's dream but with very big mouth and that was the main reason she hates him big time.

No,

If she calls him now,

He's going to use it as an advantage to get to her....

She tried Max's number again,

But it wasn't still going through.

"I guess I'll have to call Mr Howard and tell him I will be coming a bit later,

"She scrolled through her contacts as she searched for her boss's number,

There it is.

She dialed the number and it began to ring.

Grin Grin.

Grin Grin.

" Hello Jacky." The mans voice said,

"Good morning sir." She nervously greeted the man,

"Is there any problem?

You don't sound like yourself." The man asked when he heard her faint and nervous voice,

"Sir, and emergency just came up with my dad.

He got involved in an accident and he's at the hospital..."

"Okay Jack,

Go see him,

I give you the day off,

I'll send Max over to get the files." The man said,

"Okay,

Thanks a lot sir." She thanked the man.

She never expected him to go easy on her,

He's always strict and tough to everyone including her but all of a sudden he's being nice,

That's really great start. She arrived the hospital a few minutes later,

She just did a rough parking and ran into the hospital building,

Thank goodness there were no security personnel present at that time to stop her.

She rushed to the nurse on duty at the reception desk,

"Adam Chisholm.

He was brought in earlier today, accident victim" She said to the woman,

She ran through her register,

"Adam Chisholm,

He's still at the ICU." She said,

The nurse pointed her to the direction of the ICU and she left immediately to see her father.

After waiting for a while, the doctor came out,

"Doctor, how's he?" She asked the man impatiently,

He looked at her and she sighed,

"I'm his daughter, Jacklyn Chisholm," She brought out her work ID and showed it to him.

"Oh. Well he'd lost a lot of blood, Miss and will have to be done a transfusion." He said sadly,

"He's a universal donor O Negative and can only get blood from the same blood type.

Unfortunately, we lack that blood type in our blood bank..."

"Okay doctor,

I'm his daughter,

Take my blood." She said to him,

"It'll match his right?" She asked him and he shrugged,

"It should but first, you'll have to some a blood test to be sure it will."

She agreed and followed the doctor to get her blood for the test.

When the result came out,

It was negative,

Her blood and her father's blood doesn't match,

How?

What's going on?

She asked herself.

Her mom was way in India with her younger brother for his brain tumor surgery and won't be back till next week end.

"Doctor,

What can be done to him?" She asked the doctor with a pain filled heart,

"We'll have to find a donor as fast as possible before thing get out of hand." He said to her.

Jacklyn was lost,

Her blood doesn't match her father's.

Why?

Her dream?

Countless times, she'd dreamt of being somewhere else and seeing different people as her family members,

Is that related to this?

Is this what her dreams were all about?

She was so confused and lost in her thought,

"Miss, I'll have to attend to other patients till you're ready." The doctor said to her and it brought her back to her senses.

"Okay,

I'll go inform my uncle about this." She left immediately and drove to their family home that was just right outside Manhattan.

But for once, her thought never left what had just happened.

She's spent the past two years investigating others people and disrespecting their death,

Now she's going to turn hands to herself and solve the mystery that has just opened.

I stood at my mother's open grave in the freezing rain, my heels sinking into the mud. The space beside me was empty. My husband, Hilliard Holloway, had promised to cherish me in bad times, but apparently, burying my mother didn't fit into his busy schedule. While the priest's voice droned on, a news alert lit up my phone. It was a livestream of the Metropolitan Charity Gala. There was Hilliard, looking impeccable in a custom tuxedo, with his ex-girlfriend Charla English draped over his arm. The headline read: "Holloway & English: A Power Couple Reunited?" When he finally returned to our penthouse at 2 AM, he didn't come alone-he brought Charla with him. He claimed she'd had a "medical emergency" at the gala and couldn't be left alone. I found a Tiffany diamond necklace on our coffee table meant for her birthday, and a smudge of her signature red lipstick on his collar. When I confronted him, he simply told me to stop being "hysterical" and "acting like a child." He had no idea I was seven months pregnant with his child. He thought so little of my grief that he didn't even bother to craft a convincing lie, laughing with his mistress in our home while I sat in the dark with a shattered heart and a secret life growing inside me. "He doesn't deserve us," I whispered to the darkness. I didn't scream or beg. I simply left a folder on his desk containing signed divorce papers and a forged medical report for a terminated pregnancy. I disappeared into the night, letting him believe he had successfully killed his own legacy through his neglect. Five years later, Hilliard walked into "The Vault," the city's most exclusive underground auction, looking for a broker to manage his estate. He didn't recognize me behind my Venetian mask, but he couldn't ignore the neon pink graffiti on his armored Maybach that read "DEADBEAT." He had no clue that the three brilliant triplets currently hacking his security system were the very children he thought had been erased years ago. This time, I wasn't just a wife in the way; I was the one holding all the cards.

My bank account showed exactly $42.18, and my student loan notifications were flashing red. I lived in a sweltering Queens apartment with my Aunt Lydia, where the air was thick with the smell of stale frying oil and the constant threat of being homeless. Lydia handed me a grainy photo of a man twice my age and told me she had already "sold" me to him. He was a dry cleaner looking for a wife, and in exchange for my hand, he would pay off her credit cards and my debt. If I didn't show up for the date that night, my boxes would be on the curb by midnight. I arrived at the cafe in a state of panic, my selective mutism making it impossible to even breathe. In the crowded room, I accidentally sat at the wrong table. Instead of the man from the photo, I found myself facing Gerhard Holcomb—the cold, terrifyingly handsome billionaire whose family owned the very museum where I worked. He didn't send me away; instead, he studied my trembling hands and offered me a different deal: a two-year contract marriage, a two-million-dollar payout, and a strict clause forbidding any children. I signed the papers and moved into his Park Avenue penthouse, thinking I was finally safe. But when I went back to the old apartment to retrieve the only memento of my dead parents, Lydia lashed out, leaving me bleeding from a head wound. Gerhard’s retaliation was absolute—he had her arrested and her building foreclosed on within hours, claiming he was simply "protecting his assets." As I recovered in his silent, glass-walled home, I saw a call from a famous socialite flash on his phone, and a cold truth settled in my gut. I wasn't just a wife; I was a placeholder, a silent shield used to fend off the women from his past. I looked at the massive pink diamond on my finger and realized the silence I had lived in my whole life was about to become my most expensive prison. I had traded a life of poverty for a high-stakes game of shadows, and now I had to survive the man who claimed to own me.

I arrived at the hotel with Julian's favorite takeout, ready to surprise my fiancé before our big merger. But the moment I swiped the keycard, the silence of the hallway felt heavy and wrong. Inside, a red-soled stiletto lay on the marble floor-the same one I'd watched my best friend Lila try on at Saks last week. Through the cracked bedroom door, I watched Julian's back arch as Lila looked me straight in the eye and smiled, wrapping her legs tighter around him to mock my heartbreak. I fled to the penthouse to hide, only to find Grafton, Julian's "crippled" brother, waiting in the dark. To my horror, the man who was supposed to be paralyzed stood up from his wheelchair, gripped my chin with cold fingers, and forced me to sign a contract that gave him control of my family's shares. He knew about my mother's secret medical bills and used them to buy my silence, effectively turning my life into a calculated game of corporate chess. The betrayal tasted like acid, and the injustice of it all burned in my throat. My fiancé was a liar, my best friend was a thief, and the man now controlling my fate was a predator who had been faking his disability for years. I couldn't understand how everyone I trusted had turned out to be a monster. I was trapped between a man who cheated on me and a man who wanted to own me, with no way out and no one to turn to. But when Julian came looking for me, Grafton didn't hide; he stood tall, looming over me with a possessive glint in his eyes. "Help me destroy Julian," I rasped, realizing that to survive the Faulkner men, I had to become the most dangerous player of them all.

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.
