Hard to Go After Chapter 1 No Divorce but Widowerhood

On a late autumn night.

The pouring rain all day finally began to stop.

No lights were on in the villa, and there wasn't lightning. The house was deadly silent and dark.

In a thin dress, a girl was huddling by the bed in the bedroom. With her arms clasping round her knees, she squatted there, motionless.

Her body was shivering with the cold, but she took no measures to warm herself up.

Finally, the vroom of the car engine came from the courtyard.

A full eight hours.

She waited from the afternoon till the middle of the night. Finally, he came back.

Flap...

The first thing the man did after he came in was to turn on all the lights in the villa.

The light stung the girl's eyes. She covered her eyes and put her hands off until she slowly adapted to the light.

Then her eyes landed on the man at the door.

He stood there with a poker face. His legs were straight and long. Above his wet shirt was his delicate, stunning face. Like a king, he naturally attracted attention and boasted an awful vibe.

"Jeffrey..." She opened her thin lips and called out softly in a trembling voice.

The man acted like he didn't hear her. Without even a glance at her, he strode out of the bedroom.

He came back today to ask about the matter with Luna Sandoval. When he saw her like that, he was in no mood to speak a word.

Heh, what kind of person was she? Hadn't he known her well enough in the past year?

After the man left, the girl clutched a piece of paper on the floor and clenched her fist so tightly that her nails almost dug into her flesh.

This was the man she had loved for five years.

He was ruthless, but his charisma was irresistible and deadly.

She thought she could melt his heart of stone. Unexpectedly, he made her life a cold cell first.

She thought he had driven away as usual. To her surprise, he showed up again in the bedroom half an hour later in just a bath towel.

He approached her step by step. The air about him was awful.

Scarlett Park lifted her eyelids and met his eyes as deep as the ocean.

Her eyes were dark and her skin was pallor probably because she hadn't been in the sun for a long time.

"What... what do you want?" Scarlett panicked and cowered to the corner.

"Heh, you, of course!" The man forced the words slowly out of his clenched teeth.

"Don't... don't come closer." The girl said, a quiver in her voice, and her hands pushed against his burning chest.

Feeling something under his feet, the man dropped his eyes. When he saw the striking title on the white paper, his eyes turned colder.

"You want a divorce?" He stopped moving and looked at her contemptuously. His voice was cold.

"Do you see any point in sustaining our marriage?" Scarlett fought back her tears desperately and whimpered uncontrollably.

"Heh." Jeffrey snorted.

He kicked the two copies of divorce papers to the closet and continued, "What makes you think you have the right to bring it up?"

He paused and snapped, "There is no divorce but only widowerhood in my dictionary."

Without waiting for her reaction, he stretched out his arm, lifted her, and threw her onto the king-size bed.

Scarlett resisted desperately and accidentally pulled off his bath towel. When she saw his naked body, she was shocked.

"Good, very good! With no man touching you for a year, you're horny as hell." His voice was cold and a little playful.

He bore down on her thin body, lowered his head, and kissed her shivering lips.

"No, don't..." Hot tears streamed out of her eyes. Glistening, they enraged the man completely.

"You want a divorce without fulfilling your spousal duty once? Do you think it's possible?" The man pressed his lips against hers, giving her no chance to speak another word.

Her dress was brutally torn to pieces.

He treated her like a sex doll, showed no mercy, and aggressively started intercourse without any foreplay...

It started to drizzle outside. The rainy night seemed endless.

I married Clive Harrington, the coldest billionaire in Manhattan, under a strict contract that forbade any emotional burdens. When I needed a high-risk surgery to save my sight, I checked into the clinic alone, hiding the procedure from a husband who saw me as nothing more than a legal asset. I thought I could handle the darkness in silence. But while I was blind and bandaged in my hospital bed, my biological mother called, screaming that if I didn't produce a Harrington heir by the end of the fiscal year, she would cut off the life-saving treatments for my disabled sister. I was crawling on the cold hospital floor, desperately feeling for a cane I had dropped, when I touched a pair of expensive leather shoes. It was Clive. He was supposed to be in London closing a multi-million dollar deal, but there he was, watching his "contract wife" groveling in the dark like a beggar. He didn't walk away in disgust. He carried me to a five-thousand-dollar-a-night VIP suite and sat by my bed, listening in chilling silence as another voicemail from my mother filled the room, calling me a "useless broodmare" who was only worth the trust fund disbursements my marriage secured. I expected him to remind me of Clause 34B or hand me divorce papers now that I was "damaged goods." Instead, I felt his thumb brush a stray tear from my cheek, his presence shifting from a statue of ice into a predatory shield. "I thought I was just currency to you," I whispered, my voice trembling behind the gauze. "Just an investment." Clive didn't answer with words. He picked up his phone and called his head of legal with a single, terrifying command: "Kill the Douglas family’s credit lines. Every debt, every lien—trigger them all. If they want a war, I’ll give them a massacre." As he leaned down to kiss my bandaged forehead, I realized the contract was dead. My husband wasn't protecting an asset anymore; he was hunting the people who had dared to touch what belonged to him.

The heavy iron gates of the Wilderness Correction Camp groaned as they released me after three years of state-sponsored hell. I stood on the dirt road, clutching a plastic bag that held my entire life, waiting for the family that claimed they sent me there for "rehab." My brother, Brady, picked me up in a luxury SUV only to throw me out onto a deserted highway in the middle of a brewing storm. He told me I was a "public relations nightmare" and that the rain might finally wash the "stink" of the camp off me. He drove away, leaving me to limp miles through the mud on a snapped ankle. When I finally dragged myself to our family estate, my mother didn't offer a hug; she gasped in horror because my muddy clothes were ruining her Italian marble. They didn't give me my old room back. Instead, they banished me to a moldy gardener’s shack and hired a "babysitter" to make sure I didn't embarrass them further. My sister, Kaleigh, stood there in white cashmere, pretending to cry while clinging to her fiancé, Ambrose—the man who had once been mine. They all treated me like a volatile junkie, refusing to acknowledge that Kaleigh was the one who planted the drugs in my bag three years ago. They wanted to believe I was broken so they wouldn't have to feel guilty about the "wellness retreat" that was actually a torture chamber. I sat in the dark of that shed, feeling the cooling gel on the cigarette burns that covered my arms, and realized they had made a fatal mistake. They thought they had erased me, but I had returned with a roadmap of scars and a hidden satellite phone. At dinner, I didn't beg for their love. I simply rolled up my sleeves and showed them the price of their silence. As the wine spilled and the lies crumbled, I sent a single text to the only person I trusted: "I'm in. Let them simmer." The hunt was finally on.

One Night With My Billionaire Boss

I woke up on silk sheets that smelled of expensive cedar and cold sandalwood, a world away from my cramped apartment in Brooklyn. Beside me lay Ezra Gardner—my boss, the billionaire CEO of Gardner Holdings, and the man who could end my career with a snap of his fingers. He didn’t offer an apology for the night before; instead, he looked at me with terrifying clarity and proposed a cold, calculated business arrangement. "Marriage. It stabilizes the board and solves the PR crisis before it begins." He dressed me in archival Chanel and sent me home in his Maybach, but my life was already falling apart. My boyfriend, Irving, claimed he had passed out early, yet his location data placed him at my best friend’s apartment until three in the morning. When I tried to run, I realized Ezra was already ten steps ahead, tracking my movements and uncovering the secret I’d spent twenty years hiding: my connection to the powerful Senator Grimes. I was trapped between a CEO who treated me like a line item on a quarterly report and a boyfriend who had been using me while sleeping with my closest friend. I felt like a pawn in a game I didn't understand, wondering why a man like Ezra would walk up forty flights of stairs on a broken leg just to make sure I was safe. "Showtime, Mrs. Gardner." Standing on the red carpet in a gown that cost more than my life, I watched my cheating ex-boyfriend’s face turn pale as Ezra claimed me in front of the world. I wasn't just an assistant anymore; I was a weapon, and it was time to burn their world down.
