Bride of the mist Chapter 1 Misthaven

The mist hung heavy over the hills as Lily drove into Misthaven. She had heard of the town's mysterious past, but had never imagined it would be so eerie. The fog was so thick that she could hardly see more than a few feet ahead of her, and the silence was only broken by the occasional hoot of an owl or the rustling of leaves.

Lily had been sent to Misthaven by her editor to cover the annual Harvest Festival, which was the town's biggest event of the year. She had never been to a small town before, and the sense of isolation was overwhelming. As she drove through the quiet streets, she couldn't help but wonder what she had gotten herself into. Finally, she spotted the sign for the inn she had booked. It was an old-fashioned building, with a thatched roof and a white picket fence. She parked her car and hurried inside, eager to escape the mist. The lobby of the inn was cozy, with a roaring fire in the hearth and antique furniture scattered about.

A plump woman with rosy cheeks greeted her warmly. "Welcome to Misthaven Inn, my dear! I'm Mrs. Higgins, the innkeeper. You must be Lily, the journalist who's come to cover the festival." Lily smiled gratefully. "Yes, that's me. It's lovely to meet you, Mrs. Higgins." "Likewise, dear. Your room is all ready for you. It's the one at the end of the hall, on the left." Lily thanked her and headed up the stairs. The hallway was dimly lit, and the creaking floorboards gave the impression of a haunted house. She shivered involuntarily and quickened her pace. When she opened the door to her room, she was pleasantly surprised. It was bright and cheerful, with a large four-poster bed and a bay window overlooking the misty hills. She set down her bags and collapsed onto the bed, relieved to have arrived at her destination.

As she lay there, she thought about the festival she was there to cover. She had done some research beforehand and knew that it was a celebration of the harvest season, with food and craft vendors, live music, and a parade. But there was another, darker aspect to the festival that intrigued her: the legend of the bride of the mist.

According to local folklore, a young bride had been abandoned by her groom on their wedding day. Heartbroken and alone, she had wandered into the mist and was never seen again. But on certain foggy nights, her ghostly figure could be seen walking the moors, still searching for her lost love. Lily was fascinated by the story and had hoped to write an article about it. But she had no idea how to approach the subject without sounding like a superstitious tourist.

As she pondered this, there was a knock at her door. She got up to answer it and found a tall, broad-shouldered man standing on the threshold. He had piercing blue eyes and a rugged jawline, and Lily couldn't help but feel a flutter in her stomach. "Hello, miss. I'm Jack, the sheriff of Misthaven. I heard you were in town to cover the festival, and I wanted to make sure you had everything you needed." Lily was taken aback by his sudden appearance, but managed to compose herself. "Thank you, Sheriff. That's very kind of you." "Please, call me Jack. And if you need anything, don't hesitate to ask. We like to take care of our visitors here in Misthaven." Lily smiled and nodded, feeling a warmth spread through her. She had never met a small-town sheriff before.

I had just survived a private jet crash, my body a map of violet bruises and my lungs still burning from the smoke. I woke up in a sterile hospital room, gasping for my husband's name, only to realize I was completely alone. While I was bleeding in a ditch, my husband, Adam, was on the news smiling at a ribbon-cutting ceremony. When I tracked him down at the hospital's VIP wing, I didn't find a grieving husband. I found him tenderly cradling his ex-girlfriend, Casie, in his arms, his face lit with a protective warmth he had never shown me as he carried her into the maternity ward. The betrayal went deeper than I could have imagined. Adam admitted the affair started on our third anniversary-the night he claimed he was stuck in London for a merger. Back at the manor, his mother had already filled our planned nursery with pink boutique bags for Casie's "little princess." When I demanded a divorce, Adam didn't flinch. He sneered that I was "gutter trash" from a foster home and that I'd be begging on the streets within a week. To trap me, he froze my bank accounts, cancelled my flight, and even called the police to report me for "theft" of company property. I realized then that I wasn't his partner; I was a charity case he had plucked from obscurity to manage his life. To the Hortons, I was just a servant who happened to sleep in the master bedroom, a "resilient" woman meant to endure his abuse in silence while the whole world laughed at the joke that was my marriage. Adam thought stripping me of his money would make me crawl back to him. He was wrong. I walked into his executive suite during his biggest deal of the year and poured a mug of sludge over his original ten-million-dollar contracts. Then, right in front of his board and his mistress, I stripped off every designer thread he had ever paid for until I was standing in nothing but my own silk camisole. "You can keep the clothes, Adam. They're as hollow as you are." I grabbed my passport, turned my back on his billions, and walked out of that glass tower barefoot, bleeding, and finally free.

For three years, I was the perfect, invisible wife to Bart Brown. On our third anniversary, I stood in the kitchen for four hours, preparing his favorite meal with imported truffles, only to receive a cold text command. "Crysta fainted again. Get to the hospital. Now." My rare Rh-negative blood was the only thing the Brown family valued. Bart didn't want a wife; he wanted a walking blood bank for his "sick" best friend, Crysta. While I was fainting from chronic anemia, Crysta was smirking in her hospital bed, clutching Bart's hand and mocking my "peasant" lifestyle. Even his mother treated me like a servant, demanding I vacuum the floors after I'd already offered my veins for the hundredth time. When I finally reached my breaking point and signed the divorce papers, they didn't let me go quietly. They filed a false police report, accusing me of stealing a multi-million dollar diamond necklace just to watch me crawl. I didn't understand how a family could be so heartless. I had cooked their meals, cleaned their house, and literally bled for them, yet they were determined to ruin my life the moment I stopped being useful. Did they really think I was a nobody with nowhere to go? Standing outside the hospital with a bruised wrist and nothing to my name, I didn't cry. I simply took off my cheap wedding ring and dialed a secure line I hadn't touched since the day I married him. "It's me, Dad," I whispered as a fleet of black Maybachs rounded the corner. "The extraction is a go. I'm coming home."

The heavy iron gates of the Wilderness Correction Camp groaned as they released me after three years of state-sponsored hell. I stood on the dirt road, clutching a plastic bag that held my entire life, waiting for the family that claimed they sent me there for "rehab." My brother, Brady, picked me up in a luxury SUV only to throw me out onto a deserted highway in the middle of a brewing storm. He told me I was a "public relations nightmare" and that the rain might finally wash the "stink" of the camp off me. He drove away, leaving me to limp miles through the mud on a snapped ankle. When I finally dragged myself to our family estate, my mother didn't offer a hug; she gasped in horror because my muddy clothes were ruining her Italian marble. They didn't give me my old room back. Instead, they banished me to a moldy gardener’s shack and hired a "babysitter" to make sure I didn't embarrass them further. My sister, Kaleigh, stood there in white cashmere, pretending to cry while clinging to her fiancé, Ambrose—the man who had once been mine. They all treated me like a volatile junkie, refusing to acknowledge that Kaleigh was the one who planted the drugs in my bag three years ago. They wanted to believe I was broken so they wouldn't have to feel guilty about the "wellness retreat" that was actually a torture chamber. I sat in the dark of that shed, feeling the cooling gel on the cigarette burns that covered my arms, and realized they had made a fatal mistake. They thought they had erased me, but I had returned with a roadmap of scars and a hidden satellite phone. At dinner, I didn't beg for their love. I simply rolled up my sleeves and showed them the price of their silence. As the wine spilled and the lies crumbled, I sent a single text to the only person I trusted: "I'm in. Let them simmer." The hunt was finally on.
