If you see her gor the time, you will think that an angel just dropped from heaven. Her vivid brown eyes wandered on her brilliant chocolate spotless face. Unlike other women who make their hair short during gestation, she has maintained her braided hair. If you observe her from a distance you could see her enlarged tummy from her curvy figure that formed in her nightdress. Lisa now stands on a mat at the middle of her living room. She looks extremely stressed. But what is leading to her unrest?
A well furnished living room with a three sofas two on the opposite sides while the other placed to face the television and stereo table at the far end of the house, near a door that to the staircase room. The other is just near the large arch shaped entrance towards the dining room and kitchen. Where as the last one id is near the balcony door. The moonlight can be observed penetra from the large windows found on the right side of the house which faces the east.
At the left sofa sits an old man, probably in his mid sixties. Near him sits an old lady who seems to be in her late fifties. Both have grey curly hair but still look healthier and younger. Their faces are not full of wrinkles as they always say, wrinkles come earlier in a troubled man's life. The man is smiling whereas the lady is frowning that her cheeks are swollen. Inside her throat someone can see ire burning like fire.
"Can i bring you some juice?" a young lady wearing a white costume asks.
"Yes little Suzy," the old man named Jesse answers with enthusiasm.
"Ok, sir!" she says as she leaves for the kitchen.
"Tell me now, where is your husband at this time? It is near midnight," the lady known as Milly asks Lisa angrily.
"How will i know then?" she asks her extremely frightened and her voice faint.
"That is what you can tell you mom-in-law?" she tells her raising her voice up high. Frightened by this, the maid's hands grow weak. She almost drops the tray she is carrying. Were it not for Jesse's help, all the expensive glassware would have crushed into rubble. He takes it and puts it on the coffee table near them. He takes his seat back. Milly notices her husband's swiftness and calmness hasn't changed much with age. She is proud of taking good care of him.
" See what you've caused, Milly," he tells her, tenderly caressing her back. He hopes to lower her temper this way.
"Ok, my sir, I have heard. Let me shut up my mouth. But you are the one spoiling this kids. Or maybe they've grown into adults and forgot what i taught them. How can someone, a manager work till late in the night from early at dawn. Can't you see the red flag here? I'm trying to help her but you can't see. Time will tell," she says now with a much lower voice as she serves her husband with some juice.
Lisa's phone creeks. It is a message.
" I'm sorry my love. It is like i won't be able to reach home today. There's a lot I need to do. I will miss you my dear," she reads the message loudly like an announcement. Else, Milly will be mad at her. Else, she could be slapped. Milly says she is trying to be strict to raise respectable kids and not crooked hooligans. That has been her principle till today.
" Ok, " Jesse says feeling relieved, then I shall have peace. "
" Are you serious my husband? You seem to have turned emotionless. How will this young lady carrying someone in her sleep alone? " she asks trying as much not to raise her voice too high.
" So you want I to sleep with her. "
" I know Mike well. I will sit here waiting for him until he shows up. "
" If you sit here then I will be your companion. Lets light some mosquito coils. Suzy take mom to sleep. Ensure she is asleep."
"Now you are thinking," she says as she falls on his thigh and covers herself with the cloth ahw she was carrying. "I had missed this momen," she thinks, "it is long time ago we sat camping like this."
"I'm not feeling asleep. Let me take some juice as we all wait for him," Lisa says as she walks to the coffee table pouring some juice in the glass, "Suzy, could you have some?"
"Ok, ma'am. I will have just a little."
The two sit on the mat. Jesse watches them. A memory of his twin daughters comes in mind. He remembers how they sat on a mat just near his armchair. Those days he was not ak bestowed with wealth and they were living in a two bedroom rental house. They always gave him hope until they grew up and left for studies in a far away country. He remembers how he cried the day they left and till today they never came back nor has he any information about them. They just disappeared from his life like that. He was left only with three boys and a girl. Mike is one of the boys. He once used to be good but things have changed so much today.
"Father, why are you looking at us like that. Is there anything wrong?" Suzy's statement brings him back to the moment. He answers nothing is wrong and closes his eyes. He places his palms on Milly who is already asleep. He wonders if this is the waiting his wife meant. To sleep in their son's house? He has no option but to break the tradition. He stays there looking at the wall clock aa it hits midnight. He asks Lisa to leave for her bed do he had all in control. "My son is so stupid. If someone truly loves you, then you are supposed to love them too. If you lose them, oh they have no substitute. I'm sorry my poor son for not teaching you this," his thoughts wander wildly.
Lisa watches them as she heads for the stairs to the master bedroom which is upstairs. Suzy accompanies her as she was told. She ensures that she climbs the stairs well and doesn't miss any. She is doing someone else's job.
