KARMA AND THE BILLIONAIRE Chapter 1 ONE

Chapter One

It was a warm evening. Everyone was immaculately dressed, and John West kept beaming with joy. He had helped himself to several rounds of dessert, and his loud belch subtly reminded him that the metabolism of the ice-cream in his stomach wasn't over, and he would do well to stop the intake. John ignored the warning and went for more, who could resist strawberry flavor? His Dad, Oliver West was sitting at the dining table along with the rest of his family as they celebrated. He could hear their laughter and metallic cling of clashing glassware. He did not know what they were celebrating, neither did he care. He had all the ice-cream he wanted, and that was all that mattered. Nana, his maid should have been watching him, but she was too busy cooking.

With his parents outside welcoming guests, his maid in the kitchen and the butler putting the finishing touches around the house, there was no one to watch him, and he roamed free.

Three minutes of a ninja-like walk brought him to the kitchen, his favorite spot in the house. A mild groan from his stomach reiterated the warning that his body had had enough of ice-cream, but he went on undeterred. He was fantasizing about the yummy, gelatinous goodness about to grace his mouth when a deep voice from behind him disrupted his reverie.

"Hmm, hmm. John, don't you think you've had enough ice-cream?"

John looked back and looked into the deep blue eyes of their butler. He started to explain, but the butler cut him short with a finger to his mouth.

"Yes, I know you love ice-cream, but you have to take it easy so you don't get sick. OK?" A nod from John sufficed for him.

"Good. Just take one more, and....." His words were drowned by a barrage of fireworks (or so it seemed) and a loud explosion. His ice-cream tumbled in slow motion and everything suddenly went dark.

He woke up with a start and a mild headache. He had had that dream that haunted him almost every night without warning. He could not decode what the dream meant, but it always made him feel like he had lost something so precious to him. He took one look at the figure sleeping peacefully beside him, and he smiled. When he remembered that the beauty beside him could soon be taken away from him, his smile turned into a frown.

Sarah Lance was his two-month-old wife. He had promised her many things while they were dating, but sadly their lives had been filled with the opposite of his promises. He had promised her a life of joy and happiness, but their marriage was constantly plagued by sadness and despair.

It was not really his fault, but that of his in-laws. Sarah – in their opinion – had made the mistake of marrying a pauper when she could have married a much wealthier man whose investments could have kept the declining family business afloat. It didn't help that Peter Lance; her father had been embarrassed many times as Sarah had obviously decided to keep insulting the men her father had tried to matchmake her with. It didn't help that their family business – Lance industries – had been severely affected by unfavorable government policies, a hostile market and ever-increasing competitors and greatly needed a large injection of funds if it would stay afloat. Peter Lance had tried in vain to get his daughter to marry one of the many billionaires around him.

Sarah was blonde, had a lovely figure and was exceptionally beautiful. He had watched her grow and mature with joy, knowing that she would prove to be a useful pawn in future business negotiations. Little did he know that his daughter had her eyes fixed on someone else.

John West was the adopted son cum mechanic cum cleaner cum all-purpose handyman of the Lances, and had lived with them since he was a boy. He was slightly older than Sarah, but had grown fond of her, and she of him over the years.

She was the only daughter of the Lances who didn't treat him like a maid. Peter Lance had noted the growing fondness between the two, but had dismissed it as just child-like affection, until he had asked his daughter one day the type of man she would like to marry.

To his consternation, her blunt reply was, "someone like John." Alarmed, Peter Lance decided to take no chances and separate the two of them, sending Sarah overseas to study but they had somehow managed to stay in touch and their love had blossomed. Sarah had rejected five suitors in one month, all of whom were multimillionaires and had promised to invest heavily in Lance industries and had ended up marrying John.

John looked at his beloved again with a heavy heart. he had brought her into a life of penury since their marriage as he was jobless and Sarah had been disowned and cut off from the family funds by her father. Not that Sarah cared though, all she wanted was to be with the man she loved.

John quickly forced a smile as he saw Sarah turning. He didn't want to trouble her, but his efforts were futile.

"Good morn....." Suddenly Sarah stopped. "John, are you okay?"

John managed to squeeze out a chuckle. "No dear, something got into my eye."

Sarah sighed. "Don't lie to me John, did you have that dream again?"

Six years ago, I was a naive girl sold by my father to the powerful Sanders estate, only to be tossed onto the streets after a brutal assault they labeled "marital infidelity." I fled the country pregnant and broken, hiding from the shadow of a husband I had never even met. Now, I’ve returned to New York with my triplets to sign the final divorce papers and disappear forever. But Archibald Sanders—the man I was told was a crippled recluse—intercepted us with the cold precision of a predator. He didn't see the woman his family destroyed; he saw a gold-digger who had shamed his name. His security team hunted us to a grimy motel, using tactical force to snatch my children away and drag me to his glass-walled empire. In his office, he loomed over me, demanding a DNA test and threatening to throw me in prison while my babies were lost to the foster system. He was convinced I’d cheated, yet he stared at my sons with a haunting confusion, unable to ignore the stormy blue eyes that were a perfect mirror of his own. I stood there, paralyzed by his scent—the sharp tang of rain and expensive leather that triggered the icy dread of my worst nightmares. How could he accuse me of betrayal when he felt exactly like the monster who had shattered my life in that dark hotel room? "I'll sign anything," I sobbed, "just give me my kids." But the game changed when my five-year-old son hacked the tower’s security, holding the skyscraper hostage to save me. In the chaos, a fragile, silent boy—Archibald’s secret son—wandered into the room and reached for me as if I were his missing soul. Archibald’s face turned to stone as he tore up the agreement and locked the doors. "Until I find out why my son is looking at you like that," he growled, "you aren't going anywhere."

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.

I thought I was waking up in the arms of Arthur, the man I loved. But as the morning light hit the Hamptons estate, the man buttoning his cuffs by the window turned around with eyes like chips of ice. It was Augustus Riddle, Arthur’s cruel younger brother, and I had just spent the night whispering confessions of love into the wrong man's ear. The night I thought was a beautiful beginning turned into a devastating nightmare. Instead of comfort, Gus treated me like a stain on his expensive carpet, scribbling a check for "services rendered" before shoving me into a dark service corridor to hide my existence from his brother. "How much does it cost to buy your silence?" He sneered, before leaving me barefoot in a torrential downpour while he drove away in a luxury Cadillac. Four years later, I am a struggling actress in Los Angeles, working double shifts as a barista just to keep the lights on. My life was finally stable until my roommate dragged me to a high-end dinner to meet her new "influential" boyfriend. The man sitting at the table, looking more arrogant and lethal than ever, was Augustus. He spent the entire night humiliating me, calling me a pathetic amateur and a social climber in front of my only friends. When I fled into the rain and collapsed on the sidewalk, skinning my knee until I bled, he watched from his car. He saw me clutching a plastic baggie containing the taped-together pieces of that four-year-old check—the only proof of my shame. He looked at me like roadkill, rolled up his window, and drove off into the dark. I couldn't understand why he was doing this. Why did he hate me enough to crush me, yet remember that I couldn't handle the smell of cigarette smoke? Why did he leave me bleeding in the street, only to send expensive medical supplies and coffee to my door the very next morning? "I'm moving out." I told my roommates, realizing that Gus Riddle didn't just want to destroy me; he wanted to haunt me. I grabbed my suitcase and walked out with eighty dollars to my name, finally ready to disappear into the city before he could burn the rest of my life to the ground.

The rain in Detroit was slick with grime when my family finally came to fetch me. They didn't want a reunion; they wanted a sacrificial lamb to marry into the Kaufman empire to save their failing business. I thought I was just being sold off, but the limo ride ended under a dark overpass where six hired thugs were waiting with chains. My own sister had ordered them to "break my spirit" so I’d be a shaking, pathetic mess by the time I reached the altar. They called me "Detroit trash" and sprayed air freshener when I sat on their leather seats. My stepmother wanted a video of me begging for my life, and my father was ready to trade me like a used car to a man everyone called a "vegetable." They expected a submissive country girl, unaware that I was a high-level "cleaner" who could snap a radius bone before they could even scream. When I finally reached the Kaufman estate, I found my fiancé, Barron, slumped in a wheelchair, drooling and silent. But as soon as the doors closed, the "invalid" grabbed my wrist with a grip of iron and whispered a command that changed everything. I didn't understand why my own blood was so desperate to see me destroyed. What had I ever done to deserve a hit squad and a forced marriage to a man they thought was a corpse? But Barron isn't a vegetable, and I'm not a victim. We just touched down at the Moon family gala in a matte-black helicopter, and as the doors slide open, the "broken" bride is about to show them exactly what happens when you throw away the wrong daughter. "If we're going to crash a party," Barron whispered, his eyes burning with lethal clarity, "we should make an entrance."
