Chapter 1 Vanessa

I was running around the palace, trying to get everything done on time. I haven't been given even a minute of rest and today was only hectic for me. It doesn't seem to be getting better, rather it's getting worse.

"Vanessa!" The head maid screamed my name.

I flinched, making all the things I held fall to the ground. I was only going to be in more trouble now that all these are broken. I tried using anything I could find to cover it, but it was already too late since she had seen it.

"You bastard," she slapped me hard on the face. It took a lot of me not to burst out crying, there were many more dishes, but she didn't care as long as she hurt me.

"Are you sent to me by gods to frustrate me? Do you have to do anything to infuriate me? You're nothing but a filthy human."

I stared blankly at the ground, trying my best not to cry. It wasn't the first time that she's been insulting me, and I was already used to it.

"Clean that up and come and help the cooks."

I nodded in response and started picking it up, dropping it inside a trash can nearby. She hissed and walked away, leaving me alone there. I was the only one left alone to clean a lot of dishes and also prepare flour the natural way.

It would take them nothing to get flour, but they just wanted to torture me whichever way they could. Being the only human in the pack would only make others treat me inhumanely.

I was adopted by a werewolf couple when I was a baby, ever since the death of my biological parents and I have no memory of either of them. I was raised by them and didn't know my identity as a human until their death. My parents kept it hidden from them, but when I didn't get my wolf at eighteen, they discovered my identity.

It was also the first time for me, and it pained me to know that I had been an outcast all along. They wanted to kill me, but after pleadings from some set of people, they decided to just let me live only if I agreed to live as a maid. I had no choice and had to live with it, hoping I would gain my freedom soon.

I miss my parents every day and can't help but blame myself for their death. It's a guilt I'm not sure whether I would ever escape from.

"Aren't you done yet? Do you want me to start yelling again? Why are you just bent on making me miserable?" The head maid yelled.

I cleaned up the kitchen quickly and ran up to her. "I was only busy with some things. I'm done making the flour and we can start making the food," I explained.

She scoffed, "Can you keep your excuse? You can't ever be vulnerable for once. Always making excuses after excuses."

I didn't argue with her and later joined the others. We all continued what we were doing, and I was given most of the work as usual. I couldn't complain and just had to endure it all.

I was doing my work quietly while one of the girls started up a conversation with the other.

"Did you hear that the alpha son is going to introduce his Luna today? I don't know who she is, but I think that's the motive of the party?" she revealed.

"Really? I really wish I was the mate. Then I would finally be free of this wretched life and have a promising future," the other said.

They weren't doing anything and I couldn't take care of everything alone. "Can you stop talking and get back to work? These meals aren't going to cook themselves," I told her.

"What? Who are you to tell me what to do?" She gasped. "Are you forgetting your place or do I have to remind you?"

I was stunned, wondering why she was getting so upset. "I'm only saying that if you two stop talking and actually work then we'd finish everything in no time."

She was about to talk when the head maid- Mrs Claus walked in. She saw that the two other girls hadn't even gotten their aprons on and was so annoyed.

"Why are all of you bent on frustrating me? The guests are going to arrive in no time but here you are gossiping. Are you going to start working or should I fire you, Laura?" She threatened.

Laura couldn't say anything and just bent her head down, staring at the ground. "I'm sorry about that, ma'am. It's the human that-"

"I don't want to hear any excuses," she cut her off short. "You had better focus, otherwise I'm going to have to deal with you two."

After scolding them, she walked out and j couldn't help but feel very satisfied. She was angry about it but I couldn't care less.

"You'll pay for this," she said, and walked over to another counter with her minions.

The party was going smoothly, and I was thinking of escaping to my room. There were so many guests that I was sure that they wouldn't notice if I was gone.

After noticing that everyone's attention was fixed on the alpha and his son, I ran up to my room. It was shared with two others, one of whom is my best friend, but they were all back at the party.

I had already fallen asleep when I heard a loud bang on the door. I tried ignoring it but it only got louder. I let out a groan and walked to the door, only to be met by two guards who had a stern expression on their faces.

"Are you Vanessa?" He inquired and I nodded in response. He turned to the other and said, "Cuff her."

I was shocked and texted fighting them off. "What did I do? I've done nothing. Key me go," I deman

ded.

"You're charged with the murder of the soon-to-be alpha- Alpha Dylan."

I lived as the "scarred ghost" of the Stephens penthouse, a wife kept in the shadows because my facial burns offended my billionaire husband’s aesthetic. The betrayal cut deep when I discovered my father had already traded my divorce for a corporate bailout. My step-sister mocked my "trashy" appearance at a high-end boutique, while the sales staff treated me like a common thief. At home, my father threatened to cut off my mother's life-saving medicine unless I crawled back to Kason to beg for a better deal. I was the girl who took the blame for a fire she didn't start, the wife who worshipped a man who never looked her in the eye, and the daughter used as a human bargaining chip. I was supposed to be broken, penniless, and desperate. But the woman who stood up wasn't the weak Elease Finch anymore; she was Phoenix, a tactical predator with a $500 million secret. I was once the heiress to the Solomon empire, but after it crumbled, I became the "charity case" ward of the wealthy Hyde family. For years, I lived in their shadows, clinging to the promise that Anson Hyde would always be my protector. That promise shattered when Anson walked into the ballroom with Claudine Chapman on his arm. Claudine was the girl who had spent years making my life a living hell, and now Anson was announcing their engagement to the world. The humiliation was instant. Guests sneered at my cheap dress, and a waiter intentionally sloshed champagne over me, knowing I was a nobody. Anson didn't even look my way; he was too busy whispering possessively to his new fiancée. I was a ghost in my own home, watching my protector celebrate with my tormentor. The betrayal burned. I realized I wasn't a ward; I was a pawn Anson had kept on a shelf until he found a better trade. I had no money, no allies, and a legal trust fund that Anson controlled with a flick of his wrist. Fleeing to the library, I stumbled into Dallas Koch—a titan of industry and my best friend’s father. He was a wall of cold, absolute power that even the Hydes feared. "Marry me," I blurted out, desperate to find a shield Anson couldn't climb. Dallas didn't laugh. He pulled out a marriage agreement and a heavy fountain pen. "Sign," he commanded, his voice a low rumble. "But if you walk out that door with me, you never go back." I signed my name, trading my life for the only man dangerous enough to keep me safe.
