FALLING FOR THE ENEMY WITHIN Chapter 1 Lorenzo POV

The room was heavy with a scent of lust and sweat. I heard her moaning beneath me, her body responding to every touch, every kiss, every flick of my tongue on her skin. I could see her thighs quiver as my fingers walked deep inside her. She gulped, aching her back, pulling me closer with needy hands.

"More Lorenzo," she whispered breathlessly, her voice filled with desire.

I smirked, trailing my lips down to her breast, sucking one into my mouth. Her body writhed, desperate for more, but even as I pulled her closer to the edge, there was nothing in me that could follow. It was always the same.

I slide my fingers deeper. A slick warmth coated my hands. Her breath became faster. A finger digging into my back as she moaned louder. Her release until she finally shattered beneath me.

Her moan echoed in the room, but I barely felt anything. It was like I was watching the scene from outside my body detached- hollow. She collapsed on the bed trembling.

But inside me there was just nothing. I sat up, my back to her as I reached for my pants. "That was amazing."She breathed beneath me.

I didn't respond. I just couldn't. What was I supposed to say? That it wasn't enough? That it never was? No matter how many women I had, no matter how many times I tried to bury myself in them, it just didn't change the fact that I couldn't impregnate any of them.

I clenched my jaw, pulling on my shirt. Just as a knock sounded on the door, I had grown frustrated. "What the hell do you want?." I barked, irritation in my voice, unmistakable.

The door creaked open and Enzo stepped inside, his expression calm as usual. "Your grandmother called, sir. She wants you at the office."

I turned to glare at him, fists clenching at my side. "Are you out of your damn mind? Can't you see I'm in the middle of something?."

Enzo didn't flinch. He never did. He was used to my temper, used to the chaos I strived in. "She said it's very urgent."

I growled under my brace, barely holding back my rage. Of course she had called. My grandma was the only person who ever had any control over me. The woman I pretended to be the perfect grandson for. The woman who thought I was a respectable businessman. She didn't know the truth, that I was a mafia lord, feared by everyone and who crossed my path.

I turned back to the woman in the bed, her eyes wide with confusion and impatience. "Get dressed," I said flatly. "We are done here."

She huffed, clearly annoyed, but smart enough not to argue. As she gathered her clothes, I shot Enzo another glare. "I'll deal with you later,"

Enzo nodded without a word. Stepping out of the room, I was burning with frustration, not because of the interruption, but because I knew no matter how much I pretended, I couldn't be what my grandmother wanted me to be.

She had no idea that the heir she hoped for would never come, because I was broken in many ways she could never imagine. But she wasn't the only one who didn't know. No one knew.

The answer was, I was Lorenzo, the ruthless mafia lord, feared by many, respected by many. I built an empire with my bare hands, ruling the underworld with blood and fire. People knew me as a man who could make anyone disappear with a single word. But the power that controlled me was nothing when I was alone.

As I drove to my grandmother's office, the weight of my double life pressed down on me like a ton of bricks. My grandma seemed to believe I was a businessman, so unrespectable, who could carry on the family legacy. She had no idea that I was really, she had no idea what I really was, a killer, a monster.

When I arrived at my grandmother's office, I felt a smile kissing her on the cheek. "What was going on, Grandma?."

She smiled, her face lighting up at the sight of me, and for a moment, the guilt ground at me. "Lorenzo, I've been thinking," she says softly. " I want to see you settle down. Give me a great grandchild before I go."

Her words hit me like a punch to the gut. A child, a family, the only thing I couldn't give her. I forced a smile, running a hand through my hair. "Grandma, you know I'm not ready for that."

She frowned, her eyes filled with worry. "Lorenzo, you are the last of the family line. You need to carry all the family's lineage and name. Please, for me."

I swallowed hard, my chest tightening with guilt. How could I explain to her that it was impossible, that I was broken in a way that I couldn't fix? I couldn't, so I did what I always did. "I would think about it,"I said, my voice tight, "I promise."

She smiled, satisfied, but all I felt was dread. As I left the office, the weight of my expectation crushed me. I needed to clear my head, to forget, even if just for a few hours. I headed straight to the masked club, the only place that ever made me feel anything close to calm. The light, the music, the women was the chaos I strived in.

But tonight, even though that wasn't enough, the frustration boiled inside me. A dangerous storm, waiting to explode. I drowned in drinks, alcohol drinks, watching the women dance, their bodies moving to the rhythm.

Normally, I would have taken one of them upstairs by now, and tried to lose myself in the destruction of the thought. But tonight, it was different. The emptiness inside of me was too loud, even now.

And no matter how many drinks I had, no matter how much I tried to forget, I couldn't shake the truth. I could never be the man my grandmother wanted, and no amount of power control or bloodshed could change that. As I sat there and drowned in my thoughts, I couldn't help but wonder how long before everything I'd built came crashing down.

But soon, I looked to my side, and my eyes met with the beautiful maiden who was wearing a mask. I l stared at her from where I was seated. Her body was glued to the black dress she was wearing. "Very sexy body." I smirked, grabbing the wine.

"I think I will need her for tonight." I smiled.

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.

I was once the heiress to the Solomon empire, but after it crumbled, I became the "charity case" ward of the wealthy Hyde family. For years, I lived in their shadows, clinging to the promise that Anson Hyde would always be my protector. That promise shattered when Anson walked into the ballroom with Claudine Chapman on his arm. Claudine was the girl who had spent years making my life a living hell, and now Anson was announcing their engagement to the world. The humiliation was instant. Guests sneered at my cheap dress, and a waiter intentionally sloshed champagne over me, knowing I was a nobody. Anson didn't even look my way; he was too busy whispering possessively to his new fiancée. I was a ghost in my own home, watching my protector celebrate with my tormentor. The betrayal burned. I realized I wasn't a ward; I was a pawn Anson had kept on a shelf until he found a better trade. I had no money, no allies, and a legal trust fund that Anson controlled with a flick of his wrist. Fleeing to the library, I stumbled into Dallas Koch-a titan of industry and my best friend's father. He was a wall of cold, absolute power that even the Hydes feared. "Marry me," I blurted out, desperate to find a shield Anson couldn't climb. Dallas didn't laugh. He pulled out a marriage agreement and a heavy fountain pen. "Sign," he commanded, his voice a low rumble. "But if you walk out that door with me, you never go back." I signed my name, trading my life for the only man dangerous enough to keep me safe.

I went to the City Clerk’s office for a routine copy of my marriage license to finalize a trust fund audit. I expected a simple piece of paper, but the clerk’s pitying look told me my entire life was a lie. "The license was never finalized, Ms. Oliver. In the eyes of the state, you are single." The three-hundred-guest wedding at the Plaza and the Vogue features meant nothing. My husband, Gray Cooley, had intentionally filed the documents with a "procedural defect" so he could discard me without a legal divorce. Moments later, an iCloud invite titled "Our Little Secret" popped up on my screen. It was a photo of my best friend, Brylee, holding a positive pregnancy test at our Hamptons estate. Gray’s text to her was the final blow: "Happy anniversary, babe. This baby is the best gift. Once the trust unlocks today, we’re done with the charade." I soon discovered they were even stealing my career, reassigning my architectural masterpiece to Brylee while preparing my eviction notice. Gray's mother called me a "barren mule" in a leaked recording, mocking the infertility I suffered after saving Gray’s life in a construction accident. I wasn't a wife; I was a three-year placeholder used to secure his inheritance. How could the man I bled for treat me like a disposable prop? How could my best friend carry his child while pretending to comfort me through my darkest moments? The betrayal burned until it turned into a cold, hard stone of fury. I didn't cry. Instead, I walked into the penthouse of the Barretts, the Cooleys' most powerful rivals. I signed a marriage contract with Kane Barrett, the man the tabloids called the "Beast of Wall Street." "I want a wedding," I told his father, my voice steady and lethal. "Bigger than the one I had with Gray." If they wanted me gone, they would have to watch me become the woman who owns their world.
