Since the birth of our second child, Caden Holt and I had almost slept in separate rooms.
He shared a room with our son, while I stayed with our daughter.
Due to his work transfer, he only came home on weekends.
In the middle of the night, Caden suddenly sent me a suggestive photo from the room next door, saying he missed me.
This was the sixth time he had hinted at such things since returning.
Exhausted from taking care of the kids all day, I didn't have the energy to reply to him. After glancing at the message, I went back to sleep.
Unexpectedly, two days later, a woman showed up at our house.
Caden said she was a nanny he hired so I wouldn't be so exhausted.
I was almost moved to tears, but within a few days, I sensed something was off.
Since Katie Morley was a live-in nanny, I interacted with her daily.
Katie was six years younger than me, and she was optimistic and very talkative, so I didn't have my guard up around her.
One night, as she was showering, I overheard her talking on the phone. She said, "What's the point of just hearing my voice? Aren't I more enticing in person? How about I come over tomorrow?"
We had all been down this road before, so I immediately understood the implication and quickly walked away.
The next day, she indeed took a leave of absence, citing personal matters. I didn't think much of it and agreed.
That night, when my daughter had a fever, I video-called Caden to ask if he could come home to take our daughter to the hospital. However, during the video call, I noticed the shadow of a woman with long hair passing by in the bathroom mirror behind him.
I enlarged the screen to see her face, but she disappeared, then, a familiar dress was tossed onto the sink.
Wasn't that the dress Katie wore when she left?
Recalling the silhouette, my heart sank.
A wave of unprecedented anger surged through me!
The so-called nanny hired to ease my burden was just a deceitful lie from this despicable man!
My husband, Caden Holt, was an engineer.
When I met him, I was at the lowest point in my life. I always thought he was sent by god to save me. He was considerate and never let me do housework. He said that I deserved the best things in life.
So, despite Caden's plain-Jane, short stature, and lack of a prestigious family background, But I still married him for his kindness, giving him everything I had.
But now, he had brought his lover into our home.
"What's wrong, honey? Why aren't you asleep yet?" Caden asked, and his voice on the phone was still gentle.
I swallowed my rage, maintaining a normal tone, saying, "Is there anyone else at your hotel?"
"No, of course not!" Caden replied confidently, even joking with me, saying, "My wife is as beautiful as a goddess. Even if I had a hundred lives, I wouldn't dare mess around. But the showerhead in the hotel broke, so I called room service to have it fixed."
I really felt like spitting at the face on the screen!
It was disgustingly over the top!
"Our daughter has a fever and needs to go to the hospital. Can you come back now?" I asked.
"A fever? Is it serious?" Caden asked.
He sounded worried but didn't move an inch from the bed, saying, "It's so late now, and driving isn't safe. Plus, I have an important bidding for land development meeting tomorrow morning. I can't be late! Why don't you take her to the hospital first? It's easy to call a car these days. I'll come back as soon as I'm done tomorrow."
I swallowed my rage, wishing I could tell him never to come back in his life.
"Fine!" I said, I didn't want to hear another word from him and hung up abruptly.
Sitting on the bed, I contemplated whether to catch him in the act.
Caden was just over a hundred kilometers away. If I left now, I could definitely get there before dawn.
But looking back at my child, I held back.
Even if I caught them, what then?
I had no job, no income, and not even the qualification to fight for custody of my children.
After weighing my options, I took my feverish daughter to the hospital alone. Fortunately, she was just a cold, nothing serious.
After finally getting her to sleep, I ended up staying awake the whole night.
Looking at my daughter, I felt torn.
But Caden's affair was undeniable, and before filing for divorce, I needed to gain the upper hand by gathering enough evidence to negotiate.
The next morning, I entrusted my son to an educational institution near his school and then went to my mother's house, asking her to take care of my daughter for a few days under the pretense of having something urgent.
Then I went straight to the electronics market to start my plan.
The first step was to obtain video evidence of Caden's affair, which would be the most direct and compelling evidence in court.
From the current situation, it was clear this wasn't their first time.
Since they wanted to sneak around, I would create opportunities for them.
I specifically bought high-definition miniature infrared cameras and even took the risk of buying listening devices, telling the shop owner it was because we had a nanny at home and needed it just in case.
Given the frequent news of nannies mistreating kids, the owner hesitated but eventually sold them to me.
Upon returning home, I installed the cameras and listening devices in various hidden corners of the house.
Unexpectedly, I found Caden's ID card in the drawer.
How could he check into a hotel without it? This made me suspicious. Could he have bought a house for that woman?
Now thinking back to the walls in that video, they indeed didn't look like typical hotel decor style.
Anger flared within me and then I grabbed Caden's ID and credit card, heading straight to the bank.
However, to check personal transaction records at the bank counter, it required the account holder to be present in person. So I had to settle for printing all of Caden's transactions from the past year at the self-service machine.
Married for ten years, I worked tirelessly and never spent a penny on myself, only to find out he was using our money to support another woman!
I found a coffee house to sit down and slowly went through the evidence. But I was shocked to my core.
Just in the past year, Caden had transferred money to this woman dozens of times.
The recent transfers alone added up to hundreds of thousands of dollars, enough for a down payment on a house.
Judging by this pattern, their illicit affair had definitely been going on for more than a year!
Someone might not believe it, but in the ten years of marriage with Caden, I never even checked how much he had in savings.
Because I believed that trust was the most important thing between a husband and wife.
But reality proved that trust was nothing but a web of lies.
The next day, Caden indeed returned and called me immediately, "Honey, where are you? Come back quickly, I'm taking you out for a feast today!"
Watching the surveillance video, I saw Caden kissing Katie after he finished speaking, and it made me feel sick to my stomach.
"What's making you so happy?" I asked, I tried to keep my tone steady over the phone.
"Insider news!" Caden said excitedly, and added, "The leadership wants to promote me to be a project manager. After ten years, I've finally made it! Honey, this badge of honor is half yours!"
I laughed coldly inside, saying, "Really? That's great. I'll be back in a few hours. You go ahead and reserve a table. I'll meet you at the restaurant."
I couldn't hold back and hung up the phone immediately.
"When are you going to divorce her, Caden?" Katie asked Caden, and she clung to his neck in the surveillance video, nibbling playfully, her voice making me want to vomit.
"Soon. Once I sell the house, I'll definitely divorce her!" Caden said to Katie.
Watching Caden in the video, and hearing his familiar voice, my hands trembled.
"But I have a feeling your wife might have already found out about us." Katie said.
"Impossible," Caden replied confidently and added, "She doesn't have the brains for that. Plus, she always thinks she's so beautiful, which she has me completely under her spell."
"So, is she prettier, or am I?" Katie asked Caden.
Caden turned and lifted Katie's chin, the sight making me nauseous. He said, "Of course, you're prettier."
I couldn't bear to watch anymore. I threw down my headphones, my blood boiling with rage and wanting to tear them apart.
Initially, I just wanted a divorce and custody of the child, but now I had changed my mind!
I wanted to make these cheating scoundrels pay dearly for their actions!
In the private room of the upscale restaurant, to my surprise, when I arrived, Katie was there too, and they were deliberately sitting a distance apart.
"Hi, Dina," Katie said, and she stood up immediately, awkwardly saying, "I hope I'm not interrupting you and Caden?"
If I said yes, would she leave?
If I said yes, would she kneel and beg for forgiveness?
"No," I smiled and sat down next to Caden saying, "You're not an outsider, right, Caden?"
Caden's expression was a bit odd, and he quickly explained, "The power at home went out, and the electrician is fixing it. "It doesn't matter if one more person joins us, so I brought her along."
He leaned over and whispered in my ear, "With so many valuables at home, having an extra pair of eyes isn't a bad thing."
I almost slapped him.
"Let's order," I smiled and said, agreeing with his suggestion, but Caden said he had already ordered, and everything was what I liked.
But after ten years of marriage, with me cooking every meal at home, he didn't know what I liked.
He assumed that since I was from Athoera, I must like spicy food.
But after living in Voclougro for many years, my taste had become much milder.
The reason I always cooked spicy dishes was because he was from Jusceusal and liked it spicy!
Soon, the dishes were served, even the vegetables were spicy, and I could barely eat much.
Katie, on the other hand, ate with relish, talking about how waste was shameful and how she was supporting the anti-food waste campaign.
I realized that the whole meal wasn't ordered for me at all; it was all for Katie.
This pair of adulterers was flaunting their affection right in front of me.
Suppressing my anger, I accidentally snapped my fork in half.
On the way back, sitting in the passenger seat, I suddenly noticed a piece of paper stuck to the seat with "Wife's Special Seat" written on it. I felt utterly disgusted at that moment.
Caden wasn't a romantic person. In the past, even when I wanted to hang a handmade pendant in the car, he thought it would obstruct his view while driving. So he couldn't have bought something so childish.
If he didn't buy it, then Katie must have.
"How do you like it?" Caden asked nonchalantly while driving and added, "A friend told me you girls like this kind of childish stuff, so I got one. Now, wherever I go, people will know I'm taken! Are you satisfied now?"
My eyelid twitched, and the words "Wife's Special Seat" like a knife cut into me.
But I didn't tear it off, forcing a smile instead and saying, "I like it."
"As long as you like it," Caden was pleased with my response and continued, "By the way, there's something I want to discuss with you."
"Go ahead," I braced myself for bad news.
Caden immediately said, "With the second child, we don't have enough room at home, so I'm planning to sell our current house and buy a bigger four-bedroom one. What do you think?"
"That's a good thing," I agreed and added, "Let's find a time to look at houses together."
"I've already found a house," Caden said, looking at me with a seemingly troubled expression, and saying, "It's not far from where we live now, so moving and going to school will be easy. I didn't tell you earlier because I wanted to surprise you. Are you mad?"
I put on a show of displeasure, showing my unhappiness.
He said he wanted to sell the house to buy a bigger one, but in reality, he wanted to take the money and strike me out.
"Alright then," I said and nodded calmly, secretly planning my next move.
