Chasing Back What's Mine Chapter 1 Nadine 001

I pour a drink into my glass, lifting it high. "Cheers to finding Mr. Perfect!" My voice bubbles with excitement, the smile on my face bright enough to make Sydney roll her eyes.

She doesn't approve of my wedding to Jake, which is set for tomorrow.

"Don't you think you're rushing things? He proposed less than six months after you met," she says, her tone cautious.

I know she's worried, but she can't see what I do. "Sydney, I love him. Don't you understand? When Jake looks at me, it's like every part of me lights up. I've spent my life dreaming of a fairytale, and with him, I've finally found it. He's my prince."

She shakes her head. "Whatever you say. I just hope you're not making a huge mistake. There's something off about him. I can't put my finger on it."

"Oh, Syd," I sigh, trying to brush off the tension. "You're just being your usual, practical self."

"Nadine, I'm serious. Something feels... wrong. And you're moving way too fast."

Her words twist something deep in my chest, making me uneasy. I grab her hands and squeeze. "Just... be happy for me, okay?"

She shrugs and lifts her glass. "To a blissful marriage, babe."

"Yeah, yeah. To the most blissful marriage," I repeat, our glasses clinking together. We sip, and a shared laugh follows, but her warning clings to the edges of my thoughts.

"I need some air," I say, rising from the bed.

"Want me to come with you?" she offers.

"No, I just need a minute. I'll be back soon."

She nods, watching as I step outside, still swirling her wine.

As I walked through the hallway, lost in my thoughts about the big day ahead, a sound suddenly caught my attention. I stop, listening carefully to figure out where it was coming from. It leads me to Nathalie's room, and from the unmistakable moaning, it's clear what she was up to.

My sister has never been shy about her desires. When it comes to sex, she easily finds someone willing to fuck her while we are listening to her moaning.

But who is she with this time? I wonder as I gently open the door, careful not to interrupt their moment.

"Aw, give it to me, Jay," Nathalie's voice, breathy and pleading, fills the room. I peek through the crack in the door, my eyes widening in shock.

Jake.

He's with her, slamming into her from behind, his hands all over her. My heart stops, the world is spinning. I press a hand to my mouth, stifling the cry that threatens to leave my mouth.

My body trembles, my chest tightens, and my hands shake uncontrollably. It feels like the air's been sucked from my lungs as I watch them together, their moans filling the room, oblivious to the pain they're causing me.

But then a thought comes to mind I need evidence. Moving quietly, my heart pounding as I pull out my phone. I start recording, and every second feels like torture watching Jake and Nathalie.

Jake's sweet words to my sister stab me in my heart, cutting it deeper and squeezing life out of it. Still, I brace myself and continue filming.

Satisfied with what I've captured, I hide my phone and slip out of the room, careful not to make a sound.

Back in the hallway, I collapse, my body shaking as I sob silently. The pain, the betrayal, it's too much.

Nathalie and I have always had a strained relationship, she's always envied what I have, always trying to take it for herself. And my father? He's always favored her, no matter what she does.

But now... now I have something, something that will finally shift the balance. I take a deep breath, forcing myself to stand, to pull myself together.

I hurry to my room, my chest tight from what I just witnessed. My breath comes in shallow gasps as I try to steady myself, fighting to keep my emotions in check.

Sydney is still there, she rushes over to me, her worry palpable.

"Hey, what's wrong?"

I freeze for a moment, unsure if I should say anything. The thought of her knowing gnaws at me, but the fear of her inevitable "I told you so" makes me bite my tongue. "N-nothing, I'm fine," I manage to whisper, my voice betraying me with a tremble.

Sydney's eyes narrow slightly with concern. "Are you sure? You don't look fine."

She shifts over, making room beside her. I walk over and sink into the bed, the weight of everything pressing down harder.

"It hurts that you don't want to tell me, but I won't push," she says softly. "Whenever you're ready, I'm here."

Her words break the fragile dam holding back my emotions. The tears spill over, and between quiet sobs, I manage to say, "Thank you, Syd."

"Sshh, it's okay, Nadine," she whispers, pulling me into a comforting hug.

I couldn't sleep as I tossed and turned in bed. Just as I'm about to close my eyes, my phone lights up with a message.

"Thank you for loving me with all my imperfections. Can't wait to say 'I do.'"

I stare at the screen of my phone, as fresh tears spill down my face. The memory of Jake in bed with my sister flashes through my mind. The reality of it hits me hard- I've been replaced. I can't go through with this marriage. Not with Jake.

*******

The next day, everything is set for the wedding. I slip into a stunning white dress, straight out of a fairy tale, but as I stare at myself in the mirror, my heart feels heavy.

"Are you alright?" Sydney asks, her reflection showing concern.

I take a deep breath, force a smile, and nod. "Yes, I'm fine."

"It's time to get ready. It's my big day," I say, trying to sound excited, but Sydney isn't fooled. She rolls her eyes and says, "Tell that to the wind."

My makeup is flawless, giving me a natural glow, and my hair is delicately adorned with pearls.

Then my dad walks in, pride shining in his eyes. Marrying Jake feels like a big accomplishment for him. "Are you ready for your big day?" he asks.

I smile and nod, and with that, he proudly takes my arm and walks me down the aisle.

The decorator has transformed the venue into a marine wonderland, with sailor-themed decorations and seashells arranged in a charming maritime fashion.

There was excitement in the air as the soft tune of "Here Comes the Bride" played. I force a smile, though my heart still tugs.

At the altar, Jake stands, looking as handsome as ever. But the spark I once felt for him is gone, replaced by the haunting image of him and my sister.

From a distance, I hear him whisper, "I love you." If only he knew I was fully aware of his betrayal. I force a small, polite smile, masking the storm brewing from within me.

But I have a plan-something far bigger than he can imagine. The thought alone brings a smile to my face, but still, the pain pierces through my heart.

As I walk toward the altar, I can already picture the stunned look on Jake's face when he sees my surprise for him.

Just before we exchange vows, we plan to show a video of our love story. Instead, what appears on the screen sends shockwaves through the room, leaving the crowd in stunned disbelief.

Rain hammered against the asphalt as my sedan spun violently into the guardrail on the I-95. Blood trickled down my temple, stinging my eyes, while the rhythmic slap of the windshield wipers mocked my panic. Trembling, I dialed my husband, Clive. His executive assistant answered instead, his voice professional and utterly cold. "Mr. Wilson says to stop the theatrics. He said, and I quote, 'Hang up. Tell her I don’t have time for her emotional blackmail tonight.'" The line went dead while I was still trapped in the wreckage. At the hospital, I watched the news footage of Clive wrapping his jacket around his "fragile" ex-girlfriend, Angelena, shielding her from the storm I was currently bleeding in. When I returned to our penthouse, I found a prenatal ultrasound in his suit pocket, dated the day he claimed to be on a business trip. Instead of an apology, Clive met me with a sneer. He told me I was nothing but an "expensive decoration" his father bought to make him look stable. He froze my bank accounts and cut off my cards, waiting for the hunger to drive me back to his feet. I stared at the man I had loved for four years, realizing he didn't just want a wife; he wanted a prop he could switch off. He thought he could starve me into submission while he played father to another woman's child. But Clive forgot one thing. Before I was his trophy wife, I was Starfall—the legendary voice actress who vanished at the height of her fame. "I'm not jealous, Clive. I'm done." I grabbed my old microphone and walked out. I’m not just leaving him; I’m taking the lead role in the biggest saga in Hollywood—the one Angelena is desperate for. This time, the "decoration" is going to burn his world down.

The rain in Detroit was slick with grime when my family finally came to fetch me. They didn't want a reunion; they wanted a sacrificial lamb to marry into the Kaufman empire to save their failing business. I thought I was just being sold off, but the limo ride ended under a dark overpass where six hired thugs were waiting with chains. My own sister had ordered them to "break my spirit" so I’d be a shaking, pathetic mess by the time I reached the altar. They called me "Detroit trash" and sprayed air freshener when I sat on their leather seats. My stepmother wanted a video of me begging for my life, and my father was ready to trade me like a used car to a man everyone called a "vegetable." They expected a submissive country girl, unaware that I was a high-level "cleaner" who could snap a radius bone before they could even scream. When I finally reached the Kaufman estate, I found my fiancé, Barron, slumped in a wheelchair, drooling and silent. But as soon as the doors closed, the "invalid" grabbed my wrist with a grip of iron and whispered a command that changed everything. I didn't understand why my own blood was so desperate to see me destroyed. What had I ever done to deserve a hit squad and a forced marriage to a man they thought was a corpse? But Barron isn't a vegetable, and I'm not a victim. We just touched down at the Moon family gala in a matte-black helicopter, and as the doors slide open, the "broken" bride is about to show them exactly what happens when you throw away the wrong daughter. "If we're going to crash a party," Barron whispered, his eyes burning with lethal clarity, "we should make an entrance."

I went to the City Clerk’s office for a routine copy of my marriage license to finalize a trust fund audit. I expected a simple piece of paper, but the clerk’s pitying look told me my entire life was a lie. "The license was never finalized, Ms. Oliver. In the eyes of the state, you are single." The three-hundred-guest wedding at the Plaza and the Vogue features meant nothing. My husband, Gray Cooley, had intentionally filed the documents with a "procedural defect" so he could discard me without a legal divorce. Moments later, an iCloud invite titled "Our Little Secret" popped up on my screen. It was a photo of my best friend, Brylee, holding a positive pregnancy test at our Hamptons estate. Gray’s text to her was the final blow: "Happy anniversary, babe. This baby is the best gift. Once the trust unlocks today, we’re done with the charade." I soon discovered they were even stealing my career, reassigning my architectural masterpiece to Brylee while preparing my eviction notice. Gray's mother called me a "barren mule" in a leaked recording, mocking the infertility I suffered after saving Gray’s life in a construction accident. I wasn't a wife; I was a three-year placeholder used to secure his inheritance. How could the man I bled for treat me like a disposable prop? How could my best friend carry his child while pretending to comfort me through my darkest moments? The betrayal burned until it turned into a cold, hard stone of fury. I didn't cry. Instead, I walked into the penthouse of the Barretts, the Cooleys' most powerful rivals. I signed a marriage contract with Kane Barrett, the man the tabloids called the "Beast of Wall Street." "I want a wedding," I told his father, my voice steady and lethal. "Bigger than the one I had with Gray." If they wanted me gone, they would have to watch me become the woman who owns their world.

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.
