Chapter 1 A CRUEL ENDING

Cassidy West fell and sat on the cold marble floor of her living room, with her designer dress falling around her. She was shocked and speechless watching her husband fume so madly at her.

"You thought I would not find out?" Gabriel Shaw's voice raised, his icy blue eyes burning with anger. "You betrayed me, Cassidy! You leaked company secrets to our competitor! You've made me the fool of the entire boardroom."

Her mind went places she couldn't tell trying to figure out if that was the husband she sacrificed her entire life for. In that state, Cassidy's attention was on more than on the words that fell off from her husband's mouth which caused her more hurts than anything else.

Although Cassidy bodily movement had ceased as she sat cold as though something had gotten her stuck there, she struggled to let out some words if it could calm Gabriel a bit. "I did not do it," she whispered slowly, with tears flowing down her face. "I would never hurt you, Gabriel."

But he didn't believe her. He hadn't believed her for months now. Their once-happy marriage had turned into a cold battlefield, with Celeste's shadow lingering over them like a storm cloud.

Gabriel ran a hand through his dark hair, his frustration mounting. "I gave you everything, Cassidy. And this is how you repay me?"

"You gave me nothing but your coldness," Cassidy shot back, standing up. "You never loved me, Gabriel. Not really. All you ever loved was Celeste."

His jaw clenched at the mention of her name, but he said nothing. That silence confirmed everything Cassidy needed to know. Her heart broke all over again. She had made a terrible mistake sacrificing her family, her dreams, and her happiness to be with him, and this was how it ended.

"Get out of my house," Gabriel finally said with a voice low and venomous voice. "And don't ever come back here."

Shocked by Gabriel's harsh words, Cassidy's mind was made up, she at that moment decided she would not give him the satisfaction of seeing her crumble. She turned and walked out of him, although with her heart shattering with every step she made. As the front doors closed behind her, Cassidy knew that her life has just changed cause and that she would never be the same again.

As Cassidy stepped outside, she held her bag tightly while trying to keep her composure even when the tears in her eyes tried to blur her vision. She noticed her chauffeur's sympathetic glance towards her, but she ignored him, getting into the car and staring out of the window.

As the car drove off, taking her far from the life she loved and wanted. Memories flooded her mind - their first meeting at a charity gala, the way he kept looking at her as if she was the only lady in the room, and the promises he had made to always love, cherish and protect her. Lies, all of it, were lies.

Cassidy was already drained and tired by the time she arrived at her friend's apartment. Eva Stone opened the door, her eyes widening when she saw Cassidy's face which was full of tears and her weakness did not hide either. "Hey! Cass, what happened?"

Cassidy collapsed into her arms. "It's over. Gabriel... he threw me out."

Eva hugged her tightly, stroking her hair. "Hey! Cass, relax! He doesn't deserve you. And I promise that you're going to get through this."

At the moment, Cassidy just leaned on her best friend even though she doubted and was not sure she believed what she had just said. She had no idea what the future had for her any longer. She just knew at the time that she was done with Gabriel Shaw.

Eva led her to the couch in her sitting room, and handed her a glass of water to help her relax cool off a bit. "What happened this time?" Eva asked gently.

"He accused me of leaking company secrets," Cassidy said, her voice trembling. "He thinks I betrayed him."

Eva's eyes darkened with anger. "That man is unbelievable. After everything you've done for him?"

Cassidy nodded miserably. "I loved him, Eva. I gave up everything for him. My family, my career, and this is what I get in return."

"You'll rise above this," Eva said firmly. "Be the strong woman I know you are, Cass."

Cassidy took a deep breath, while trying hard to believe her friend's words. Even when the pain she was experiencing internally was too raw and too overwhelming for her to bear.

How did her life come to this? How did she notice? How had the man she who once loved and adored her turned into a total stranger who hated her so much?

Cassidy who had fallen asleep on Eva's couch woke up the next morning with her body aching her because she had a restless night. Cassidy wasn't felling her right self, she felt like the world was moving on while she remained trapped in her misery.

With a sympathetic expression on her face, Eva walked in with two cups of coffee, "You need a plan, Cass," she said, handing her a mug. "You can't let Gabriel define your future."

Cassidy sipped the coffee. The warm coffee gave her a small comfort. "I don't even know where to start from," she uttered.

"Start by getting back on your feet," Eva said. "Reconnect with your family. Find a job that values you. And most importantly, remember who you are."

Cassidy nodded slowly. Eva was right. She can't let Gabriel's betrayal destroy her. Gabriel Shaw may have broken her heart, but She had to find a way to rebuild her life.

"Let's get married," Mia declares, her voice trembling despite her defiant gaze into Stefan's guarded brown eyes. She needs this, even if he seems untouchable. Stefan raises a skeptical brow. "And why would I do that?" His voice was low, like a warning, and it made her shiver even though she tried not to show it. "We both have one thing in common," Mia continues, her gaze unwavering. "Shitty fathers. They want to take what's ours and give it to who they think deserves it." A pointed pause hangs in the air. "The only difference between us is that you're an illegitimate child, and I'm not." Stefan studies her, the heiress in her designer armor, the fire in her eyes that matches the burn of his own rage. "That's your solution? A wedding band as a weapon?" He said ignoring the part where she just referred to him as an illegitimate child. "The only weapon they won't see coming." She steps closer, close enough for him to catch the scent of her perfume, gunpowder and jasmine. "Our fathers stole our birthrights. The sole reason they betrayed us. We join forces, create our own empire that'll bring down theirs." A beat of silence. Then, Stefan's mouth curves into something sharp. "One condition," he murmurs, closing the distance. "No divorces. No surrenders. If we're doing this, it's for life" "Deal" Mia said without missing a beat. Her father wants to destroy her life. She wouldn't give him the pleasure, she would destroy her life as she seems fit. ................ Two shattered heirs. One deadly vow. A marriage built on revenge. Mia Meyers was born to rule her father's empire (so she thought), until he named his bastard son heir instead. Stefan Sterling knows the sting of betrayal too. His father discarded him like trash. Now the rivals' disgraced children have a poisonous proposal: Marry for vengeance. Crush their fathers' legacies. Never speak of divorce. Whoever cracks first loses everything. Can these two rivals, united by their vengeful hearts, pull off a marriage of convenience to reclaim what they believe is rightfully theirs? Or will their fathers' animosity, and their own complicated pasts tear their fragile alliance apart?

I watched my husband sign the papers that would end our marriage while he was busy texting the woman he actually loved. He didn't even glance at the header. He just scribbled the sharp, jagged signature that had signed death warrants for half of New York, tossed the file onto the passenger seat, and tapped his screen again. "Done," he said, his voice devoid of emotion. That was Dante Moretti. The Underboss. A man who could smell a lie from a mile away but couldn't see that his wife had just handed him an annulment decree disguised beneath a stack of mundane logistics reports. For three years, I scrubbed his blood out of his shirts. I saved his family's alliance when his ex, Sofia, ran off with a civilian. In return, he treated me like furniture. He left me in the rain to save Sofia from a broken nail. He left me alone on my birthday to drink champagne on a yacht with her. He even handed me a glass of whiskey—her favorite drink—forgetting that I despised the taste. I was merely a placeholder. A ghost in my own home. So, I stopped waiting. I burned our wedding portrait in the fireplace, left my platinum ring in the ashes, and boarded a one-way flight to San Francisco. I thought I was finally free. I thought I had escaped the cage. But I underestimated Dante. When he finally opened that file weeks later and realized he had signed away his wife without looking, the Reaper didn't accept defeat. He burned down the world to find me, obsessed with reclaiming the woman he had already thrown away.

I died on a Tuesday. It wasn't a quick death. It was slow, cold, and meticulously planned by the man who called himself my father. I was twenty years old. He needed my kidney to save my sister. The spare part for the golden child. I remember the blinding lights of the operating theater, the sterile smell of betrayal, and the phantom pain of a surgeon's scalpel carving into my flesh while my screams echoed unheard. I remember looking through the observation glass and seeing him-my father, Giovanni Vitiello, the Don of the Chicago Outfit-watching me die with the same detached expression he used when signing a death warrant. He chose her. He always chose her. And then, I woke up. Not in heaven. Not in hell. But in my own bed, a year before my scheduled execution. My body was whole, unscarred. The timeline had reset, a glitch in the cruel matrix of my existence, giving me a second chance I never asked for. This time, when my father handed me a one-way ticket to London-an exile disguised as a severance package-I didn't cry. I didn't beg. My heart, once a bleeding wound, was now a block of ice. He didn't know he was talking to a ghost. He didn't know I had already lived through his ultimate betrayal. He also didn't know that six months ago, during the city's brutal territory wars, I was the one who saved his most valuable asset. In a secret safe house, I stitched up the wounds of a blinded soldier, a man whose life hung by a thread. He never saw my face. He only knew my voice, the scent of vanilla, and the steady touch of my hands. He called me Sette. Seven. For the seven stitches I put in his shoulder. That man was Dante Moretti. The Ruthless Capo. The man my sister, Isabella, is now set to marry. She stole my story. She claimed my actions, my voice, my scent. And Dante, the man who could spot a lie from a mile away, believed the beautiful deception because he wanted it to be true. He wanted the golden girl to be his savior, not the invisible sister who was only ever good for her spare parts. So I took the ticket. In my past life, I fought them, and they silenced me on an operating table. This time, I will let them have their perfect, gilded lie. I will go to London. I will disappear. I will let Seraphina Vitiello die on that plane. But I will not be a victim. This time, I will not be the lamb led to slaughter. This time, from the shadows of my exile, I will be the one holding the match. And I will wait, with the patience of the dead, to watch their entire world burn. Because a ghost has nothing to lose, and a queen of ashes has an empire to gain.
