A TASTE OF TEMPTATION: Vampire King And His Hybrid Bride Chapter 1 1

Okay, I know I'm not supposed to feel like this-like I'm in heat or whatever-but I couldn't help it. Jason Nollan. The vampire king. He was hot. Big, bold letters, H.O.T.

Am I stupid for feeling this way? Probably.

I sighed, shifting my weight against the cold stone wall, my wrists still bound in shackles. The smirk never quite left my lips. Even in a situation like this, I found something to defy. My eyes landed on the worn copy of Homer that had somehow ended up on the floor, a reminder that my mind still clung to some semblance of normalcy. I could almost hear the ancient words whispering from the pages, though they felt worlds away from where I was now.

And there he was. The vampire king stalked toward me with a grace so predatory it was like he owned everything-the space, the air, even the very breath I struggled to inhale.

I was frozen. My gaze fixed on him, unable to look away, even though I knew it was dangerous. His presence was like a dark cloud, suffocating and absolute. But still, I couldn't escape the pull of his power. He was the most dangerous being I'd ever come face to face with-the king of all vampires. The one who controlled entire realms with a single thought. And here I was, just a lowly shewolf, caught in his orbit.

Was he here to kill me? Or was he here to save me? Neither option seemed all that appealing.

I blinked, trying to clear my head. My thoughts raced. Why me?

I didn't expect a rescue.

I was just a shadow in this world-a wolf girl with no real place to call home. No friends except Princess Diane, and Patrick-my supposed mate's brother.

My frown deepened as I watched the vampire king approach. What was I even doing here? Well, the answer was simple enough. The asshole-the son of the Alpha-had locked me away for not bowing to his demands. For not playing along with his little game. He was supposed to be my fated mate, but after I gave him my virginity and bonded with him, he turned around and proposed to Princess Victoria, daughter of the neighbouring pack. Betrayed, I had lashed out, and for that? Jail. Starvation. Scorn from the guards.

The vampire king's frown deepened as if he'd somehow read my thoughts. Whatever he saw didn't please him.

I cursed inwardly. God, he was so damn hot.

I had read about vampires-hell, everyone knew the myths. Tall, breathtakingly beautiful, chiselled like gods. The stories didn't even begin to prepare me for the real thing. His bone structure was flawless, his skin pale, yet seemingly touched by moonlight. He moved with such fluidity, each step deliberate and graceful. His eyes-those eyes-twin pools of darkness that could trap you if you weren't careful. And his voice? A melody that could have pulled the moon from the sky.

"There you are, little wolf," he murmured, his voice low and rich, filling the empty space between us. The scent of cloves, cinnamon, honey, and something vaguely like incense washed over me. I stiffened as he bent down, picking up Homer and handing it to me with a small, mocking bow. "Poetry, I presume?"

I nodded stiffly, not trusting my voice to respond. His clothes were immaculate-dark, tailored perfection, the kind of wealth that radiated power in subtle, undeniable waves.

He didn't need to boast. His very presence commanded authority. His body was a weapon-powerful, timeless. Every muscle, every movement, imbued with ancient strength. It was overwhelming, as though the very air around him shifted with his power.

Comparing him to Alpha Jehg-or his son, the asshole who had chained me here-was like comparing a wolf to a lion. Jehg might have been a formidable shifter, but he was nothing compared to the pure, primal intensity of the vampire standing before me. This vampire king wasn't just a monster; he was a force of nature.

And I couldn't help but envy that power. My own limitations stung as I watched him, realizing I could never hope to wield such strength.

This king wasn't just a vampire; he was an ancient creature of myth. He had walked through centuries like a shadow, and now he was here, standing in front of me. But why me? What was his purpose? Was he here to save me-or to claim me?

I swallowed, fear and curiosity tangling inside me. Was he here because of my secret? Please, please tell me he didn't know.

The uncertainty buzzed in the air, thick and oppressive.

I couldn't ignore him. Not now, not when every part of me screamed to pay attention. My knowledge of vampires had always been academic-studied in books, discussed in whispers. But now that I was face to face with one, all that information seemed useless.

The only vampire I'd ever spoken to before this had been Jess, a flirtatious lab worker in Paris. Pretty, blonde, with blue eyes and a laugh that could light up a room. But compared to the king standing before me, Jess had been a child-a pretty, harmless child.

This vampire was all man-well over six feet, lean but powerfully built, a model of graceful strength. His dark, tousled hair framed his sharp face. His gaze locked with mine-intense, unreadable, black as night but flashing with an almost unnatural intelligence.

And his smile? It was small, polite, and utterly predatory. His lips barely parted, but I knew-without a doubt-that beneath them lay fangs that could tear me apart with a flick of his wrist.

But he didn't move. Not yet. He just stood there, watching me with the kind of patience only a predator could possess.

My breath caught. Something was coming. I could feel it in the air.

And I couldn't decide if I was about to be saved-or devoured.

The heavy thud of the release stamp was the only goodbye I got from the warden after five years in federal prison. I stepped out into the blinding sun, expecting the same flash of paparazzi bulbs that had seen me dragged away in handcuffs, but there was only a single black limousine idling on the shoulder of the road. Inside sat my mother and sister, clutching champagne and looking at my frayed coat with pure disgust. They didn't offer a welcome home; instead, they tossed a thick legal document onto the table and told me I was dead to the city. "Gavin and I are getting engaged," my sister Mia sneered, flicking a credit card at me like I was a stray dog. "He doesn't need a convict ex-fiancée hanging around." Even after I saved their lives from an armed kidnapping attempt by ramming the attackers off the road, they rewarded me by leaving me stranded in the dirt. When I finally ran into Gavin, the man who had framed me, he pinned me against a wall and threatened to send me back to a cell if I ever dared to show my face at their wedding. They had stolen my biotech research, ruined my name, and let me rot for half a decade while they lived off my brilliance. They thought they had broken me, leaving me with nothing but an expired chapstick and a few old photos in a plastic bag. What they didn't know was that I had spent those five years becoming "Dr. X," a shadow consultant with five hundred million dollars in crypto and a secret that would bring the city to its knees. I wasn't just a victim anymore; I was a weapon, and I was pregnant with the heir they thought they had erased. I walked into the Melton estate and made an offer to the most powerful man in New York. "I'll save your grandfather's life," I told Horatio Melton, staring him down. "But the price is your last name. I'm taking back what's mine, and I'm starting with the man who thinks he's marrying my sister."

I stood at my mother’s open grave in the freezing rain, my heels sinking into the mud. The space beside me was empty. My husband, Hilliard Holloway, had promised to cherish me in bad times, but apparently, burying my mother didn't fit into his busy schedule. While the priest’s voice droned on, a news alert lit up my phone. It was a livestream of the Metropolitan Charity Gala. There was Hilliard, looking impeccable in a custom tuxedo, with his ex-girlfriend Charla English draped over his arm. The headline read: "Holloway & English: A Power Couple Reunited?" When he finally returned to our penthouse at 2 AM, he didn't come alone—he brought Charla with him. He claimed she’d had a "medical emergency" at the gala and couldn't be left alone. I found a Tiffany diamond necklace on our coffee table meant for her birthday, and a smudge of her signature red lipstick on his collar. When I confronted him, he simply told me to stop being "hysterical" and "acting like a child." He had no idea I was seven months pregnant with his child. He thought so little of my grief that he didn't even bother to craft a convincing lie, laughing with his mistress in our home while I sat in the dark with a shattered heart and a secret life growing inside me. "He doesn't deserve us," I whispered to the darkness. I didn't scream or beg. I simply left a folder on his desk containing signed divorce papers and a forged medical report for a terminated pregnancy. I disappeared into the night, letting him believe he had successfully killed his own legacy through his neglect. Five years later, Hilliard walked into "The Vault," the city's most exclusive underground auction, looking for a broker to manage his estate. He didn't recognize me behind my Venetian mask, but he couldn't ignore the neon pink graffiti on his armored Maybach that read "DEADBEAT." He had no clue that the three brilliant triplets currently hacking his security system were the very children he thought had been erased years ago. This time, I wasn't just a wife in the way; I was the one holding all the cards.

I sat on the edge of the examination table, the crinkle of the sanitary paper sounding like thunder in the sterile room. The doctor didn't even look at me as he confirmed the news: the pregnancy was over. My husband, Keyon, didn't answer my call. He just sent an automated text: "In a meeting." When I returned to our cold mansion, I found his iPad glowing with a message from his "muse," Katina. He was throwing her a secret gala tonight-on our third wedding anniversary. He told her he couldn't wait to escape the "boring" and "draining" atmosphere I created at home. Keyon didn't stumble in until 3 AM, smelling of Katina's perfume with a smear of red on his collar. When I handed him the divorce papers, he laughed in my face. He called me a "glorified housekeeper" with no skills and no future, promising I'd be back in three days begging for a subway ticket. He even bet his friends ten thousand dollars that I wouldn't survive a week without his name. He had his assistant cancel my credit cards and block my gate access before I even reached the end of the driveway. He wanted me to starve. He wanted me to crawl. He sat in his office, mocking the "desperate" woman who pawned her three-million-dollar wedding ring for scrap metal just to pay for a meal. I stood on the rainy curb, watching the man I had protected for three years treat my life like trash. He didn't know about the ultrasound I just threw in the bin. He didn't know that while he was calling me "dull," I was the one secretly writing the code that kept his billion-dollar empire from collapsing. As I slid into a cheap Uber, I opened a hidden, encrypted app on my phone. The screen refreshed to a dashboard for an account Keyon didn't know existed. The balance was ten figures long-the accumulated wealth of "Solaris," the world's most elusive tech genius. Keyon thinks he just evicted a parasite, but he's about to find out he just declared war on the only person who can hit "delete" on his entire life.

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.
