Trapped in the CEO's contract Chapter 1 The Proposal That Wasn't Love

The rain had been falling for three days. It came through the zinc roof in the same three places it always did, and Amara had stopped moving the buckets. There was no point. The water found its way to the floor either way.

She sat on the sofa with her arms wrapped around herself, though the room wasn't cold.

Her father's business was gone. Not failing - gone. The shops seized, the cars sold, and still the creditors came, banging on the gate hard enough to rattle the hinges. Thieves, they shouted, loud enough for the neighbors. Frauds. Words like that didn't wash off a family name.

Amara was twenty-one. She had a semester of university left. None of that mattered now.

From the bedroom came her mother's crying. Soft. Constant. The kind of crying that had given up hoping anyone would hear it.

Her father sat at the dining table with his head in his hands and said nothing at all.

Then - an engine.

Not a bus. Not one of the rusted motorbikes that coughed their way down their street. This was low and smooth, a sound that didn't belong here.

Amara got up and looked through the window.

A black Rolls Royce sat outside their gate. In the rain, it looked obscene - too clean, too expensive, too much.

A man stepped out.

She knew him before she saw his face. Everyone knew that car. Everyone knew the name that came with it.

Adrian Cole.

Her father was on his feet before the gate even opened, wiping his face with the back of his hand, straightening a shirt that couldn't be straightened.

Adrian came in. The room got smaller.

He looked around once - the buckets, the torn sofa, the peeling paint - and something passed over his face. Not pity. Amara would have hated pity less. Then his eyes found her, and stopped.

She wished she'd worn something else. She wished the sofa didn't have a tear in the armrest. She wished he would look anywhere but at her.

"Mr. Obi." Adrian didn't raise his voice. He didn't have to. "This isn't about you anymore. It's about your daughter."

Her father's mouth opened. Closed. "Sir, please-"

Adrian lifted one hand, and the old man went quiet.

"Your debts are gone past saving. No bank will touch you. No investor will take the risk." He paused. "I can erase all of it with one phone call."

Amara's throat tightened. "In exchange for what?"

Adrian turned to her fully then, and for the first time she understood why people called him cold. It wasn't his face. It was that nothing in it moved.

"Marry me."

The words landed like a slap. She grabbed the back of the sofa. "What?"

"You heard me." He stepped closer. His cologne reached her before he did - something sharp and expensive. "Not love, Miss Obi. A transaction. A contract marriage. You become my wife, and your family's debts disappear. Tonight."

Her mother came out of the bedroom, pale, her cheeks still wet. "No. No, she's just a girl, she can't-"

"Enough!" Her father's voice cracked down the middle. "Do you have any idea what you're asking, Cole? She's my only daughter-"

"And I'm offering her a future." Adrian didn't look at him. He hadn't looked away from Amara once. "Without me, this family drowns. With me, she lives in a way she can't imagine. It's not a difficult choice."

Amara's chest rose and fell too fast. She wanted to scream at him. She wanted to hit him. How dare he stand in her father's house, in his expensive suit, and turn her life into a line item?

But then she looked at her father's hands. They were shaking. Her mother was crying without making a sound, one hand pressed to her mouth like she was holding something in.

Amara knew what came next if she said no. Eviction. The street. Hunger. Her degree, gone.

"Why me?" Her voice came out smaller than she wanted. "You could have anyone."

Adrian's eyes narrowed, just slightly. For a second - half a second - something moved behind them. Then it was gone.

"Because I need a wife who understands desperation." He said it plainly, without cruelty, which somehow made it worse. "Someone who knows she can't say no."

Her stomach turned over.

Every part of her said run. Her feet didn't move. She was trapped - by the debts, by his stare, by a future she had never agreed to and could not refuse.

The wall clock ticked. Nobody spoke.

Adrian reached into his briefcase and set a black folder on the table. Gold letters across the front: Marriage Contract.

"Sign it," he said. "And your family walks free."

A pen lay beside the folder. It caught the light.

Amara stared at it until her eyes burned. Signing meant giving up her freedom. Refusing meant destroying her family. There was no third door. There never had been.

Her mother whispered, "Amara, don't-"

Her father whispered, "Amara, please-"

Adrian said nothing. He just watched. He had already won, and they both knew it.

Amara closed her eyes. Outside, the rain came down harder, as if the sky had an opinion.

When she opened them, she understood something she would carry for the rest of her life.

She had no choice.

Her fingers closed around the pen.
