As I lay on the floor of our manor, bleeding out from a ruptured ectopic pregnancy, I used my last ounce of strength to call my husband, Cole. I begged him for help, my vision blurring. But the only thing I heard was the clinking of champagne glasses and his mistress's giggle in the background. "Stop the drama, June," Cole snapped, his voice cold. "We're about to go on stage. Don't call again." He hung up, leaving me to die alone on the Persian rug while he accepted an award with another woman on his arm. I woke up in the hospital days later. My baby was gone. They had removed my fallopian tube. Cole finally arrived, smelling of expensive scotch and his mistress's perfume. He didn't hug me. He didn't cry. Instead, he leaned over my hospital bed, pressing his knee into the mattress until my fresh stitches tore open and bled. "You embarrassed me by calling an ambulance," he hissed. I stared at the TV screen, numb. The research Alycia was taking credit for? It was mine. I wrote that patent years ago under a pseudonym. The drive to the hospital was a rough one. He couldn't help casting all the blame on himself. If he had been paying attention to her, she wouldn't have been hospitalized.

Each step he took was painful, further increasing his guilt and palpitations. Walking through the corners,he searched for room zero sixteen. Getting tired, he approached a lady whom he assumed to be the nurse.

"Excuse me ma'am. Where can I find room zero sixteen?"

"It's a private ward in the VIP unit. Go to your left,then you will start seeing them numerically. Check, you will see it."

"Thank you" She walked out not sparing him a glance.

The hospital was busy with people going about with their business, some were just coming out of the office with a darkened mood, others were moving out from the lab with their lab coat, some were coming out from the theater room.

The hospital was crowded in each wings, smelling of antiseptic.

Following the nurse direction, he saw the ward. Without wasting much time, he rushed in meeting a semi lifeless body on the bed. Tubes were connected all over her body.

It was such a pathetic scene.

The sight of her sent tears to his eyes. How did she end up in such a terrible state? He took a slow but steady steps towards her. Her eyes were closed. She looked pale on closer inspection.

Was this really his childhood friend? His childhood crush? The one he was head over heels in love with. How did she end up here? Just how? He mentally screamed as tears blinded his vision.

He sat on the edge. His palms caressing a forehead in pure affection. Unable to choke back his sob.,he released it. "I am so sorry,I have not been giving you my attention. I am so sorry Rachel for neglecting you,you can't go please. Think of us" Hiccupping,he wiped the tears rolling down his cheeks which blinded his vision.

"I don't know how to say this, I am so sorry"

Her hands flickered, slowly,she opened her eyes.

"Daniel..." She called weakly, struggling to sit up with much difficulty.

"No!" He pulled her down gently. "Relax Rachel,you can't afford to stress yourself lest one of this tube gets disconnected."

"Daniel" she called, breaking into an hysterical sob.

Worried and perplexed,he asked "What is wrong Rachel? "Why are you crying? Are you pregnant?" he asked the last part almost in a whisper, expectantly.

There is a great silence as she kept on sobbing. "Daniel,I am slowly dying,I have limited time to live on earth" she said.

What!? The news felt like a bomb, exploding in his head,for a moment,he was speechless and kept staring at her like some kind of joke. "Rachel is this a joke? Are you being serious right now?" he asked.

She only nodded her response.

"How?! Don't tell me you just woke up in the morning, decided to do some test and then the doctor discovered you have a few days left to live on earth. Tha to will be absurd!"

"No, I have a cancer. The doctor said I have a cancer"

"A .... Cancer?" Daniel tensed. This was worst! Just how did an healthy, good looking lady develop a cancer in just a few hours? What is a cancer anyway, his subconscious mind asked. A cancer is a serious disease in which growth of cells also called cancers, formed in the body and kill a normal body cells. Which meant, the cells must have grown without her knowledge, killing other body cells. It could result in death.

Daniel stood up from the bed, pacing round the room. Of all the people in world, why must it be Rachel? Just why the fucking hell should it be her? He was broken. He was lost . He was terrified. The love of his life laid sick on the bed looking so pathetic.

Turning to face her " Where is the doctor?"

Surprised by the question " Was there any problem?"

"No.I was thinking, there is a solution to this ailment. You could go for a surgery, I believe there is a surgery for cancer besides, it is still in the early and treatable stage"

Her hope risen face slumped, looking defeated." I thought as much but when I asked the doctor,he told me it has passed the treatable stage. It was in the last stage which meant...." She stopped talking as she started weeping.
