Milla Seliya, a twenty-four-year-old girl who works as a staff accountant in a start-up company in Jakarta. She has been working there for about a year now. And her company is progressing quite well now.
"You are one of the longest-serving employees in the company, Milla. Your work is also good. How come the boss hasn't promoted you? Isn't that strange? Instead, he recruited a new person to be finance manager last month," whispers Milla's friend - Renata.
Milla stopped her hands on the keyboard before turning to Renata.
"Have you forgotten that yesterday's finance manager vacancy was only for bachelor's degree graduates? Meanwhile, i just have diploma degree. I'm feeling grateful just only I still can work here, Renata," Milla replied.
That's right. In theory, Milla, who is one of the longest-serving employees, should have gotten a little credit for fighting for the company since it was founded. Moreover, her work was great. Milla's personality is also quite good in the office. She rarely got into trouble even though it was not uncommon for her co-workers to hold small demonstrations. Understandably, the company was relatively new but its development was so rapid that sometimes the employees felt that this development was not followed by the company's efforts in the welfare of its employees. Even when it comes to salaries, some of them are still below the minimum wage even though the company has very high standards. As Milla and Renata discussed earlier, at least bachelor graduates are required.
The company still adheres to the main requirement, which is educational history. If it possible, Milla would like to continue her studies to bachelor, but what can be made, she failed to get a scholarship, so she took diploma only so that she could study while working, and be able to graduate soon. She doesn't come from a wealthy background. If she still wants to eat tomorrow, Milla has to work hard today. Her salary is only enough to cover her primary and some secondary needs. Saving money? Only if she gets overtime or outside service money.
"Tsk, Renata, it's like you don't know how Milla is. She's grateful for anything, not like us who complain about everything. Milla's relationship with the company is like a toxic relationship. Milla is always hurt but she remains loyal," Nada chimed in. Meanwhile, Milla just smiled for response.
"Uh, but seriously. I'm even suspicious that our boss has something to do with the new manager. Maybe she entered through fraudulent channels," said Renata.
"That's it. That's for sure. After all, it's considered normal nowadays to use insiders. Especially in a private institutions like ours," Nada said.
"Already, let it go. The point is she passed, right? That means it's her fortune," continued Milla, making her two friends shake their heads.
Milla is not a perfect and kind angel. She is just an ordinary human. It's just that she is relatively ignorant and lazy to take care of unnecessary things like this. Things that she thinks have no effect on her life at all.
"You can't keep giving in like this, Mila. Try to learn how to defend the rights you deserve! You deserve to be promoted. Instead, you're being usurped by the new kid," Renata suggested.
"That's right. You're the one who's too resigned. It's like if you knew you were going to die, you wouldn't care," Nada continued.
"Yeah, not like that either. But why would I think too much about something that doesn't even affect my life? I'm fine working in this position. The important thing is that I can still eat, I can have a normal life like everyone else. Who doesn't want to be rich? But that's okay, if you can afford this, just be grateful first. There will also be a time when we will be at the top," Milla replied.
Nada and Renata could only shake their heads in wonder.
"Well, that's it. I'm going to hand this over to our boss first!" said Milla while storing several sheets of paper she had just printed into a blue folder. After that, she got up and walked away. Leaving behind her two coworkers who were still engrossed in the conversation.
'Braakkk'
Milla gasped. It turned out that her novel was carried away. She didn't realize. Because she only had a folder with her.
Milla reached for her favorite novel. A translated fantasy romance novel titled "Lady Rania and The Prince". Milla smiled before putting the novel back in her desk drawer.
'Knock knock knock'
Milla knocked on the door of Mr. Hakim's office, her boss.
"Excuse me, Sir. I'm here to deliver the report you requested yesterday. Please check the contents," Milla said kindly.
