I was the secret, wolfless mate of Aries Monroe, the powerful Alpha of the Monroe Pack. But one night, I answered his phone and heard his mistress, Isla, triumphantly announce she was pregnant with his child. When Aries found out, he didn't show an ounce of guilt. Instead, he formally rejected me, severing our sacred bond and leaving my soul in agony. His mother even came to humiliate me, demanding I pack my bags to make room for his new Luna. The next day, Isla came to my apartment to gloat. I was so sick with grief that I threw up on her dress, and she suddenly collapsed in a pool of blood, miscarrying her baby. Aries burst through the door, choking me against the wall. "You were jealous, so you decided to kill her child?" He threw me in a detention cell and threatened me with a Pack trial for attempted murder unless I publicly apologized to his mistress. He had seen the security footage. He knew I never touched her. Yet he chose to frame his own fated mate just to give the woman he loved a perfect scapegoat. My heart completely died in that cold cell. I looked at the Rejection papers he forced upon me and agreed to go to the Healer's wing. But I wasn't going to surrender. I had just accepted a top-tier cybersecurity job, and my "apology" was going to be the performance of a lifetime.
Kira POV:
I was sitting alone on a ten-thousand-dollar leather sofa, in a penthouse apartment that felt more like a gilded cage than a home. This place, perched atop the Monroe Industries tower, was my prison, and I was its only inmate, waiting for my mate, my Alpha, to return.
The clock on the wall ticked past midnight. This had become the new normal. My husband Aries never comes home.
The silence was broken by the sharp buzz of a phone vibrating against the marble island in the kitchen. The sound echoed in the vast, empty space.
My heart clenched for no reason. I walked toward it. It was Aries's personal phone, a piece of technology I was explicitly forbidden to touch. It was a clear boundary, a daily reminder of the distance he kept between us.
The screen was lit. A name flashed on it: Isla. My rival. Also Aries's brother's fiancée-the woman he claimed he was only taking care of out of a sense of duty.
An impulse, sharp and reckless, seized me. Every rational thought screamed no, but my hand was already reaching, my fingers closing around the cool metal.
I took a deep breath, my finger trembling as I swiped to answer. I didn't say a word.
Isla Beaumont's voice, laced with tears but underscored with a triumphant, possessive tone, filled the silence. "Aries? Are you there? I just got back from the clinic..."
She paused, waiting for a response that never came, then continued as if she didn't need one.
"The doctor confirmed it," she said, her voice thick with a joy she couldn't contain. "I'm pregnant. Our child... he's healthy."
Our child. The words were like a silver dagger, poisoned and precise, plunging straight into my chest.
I felt the blood freeze in my veins. A roaring sound filled my ears, drowning out everything else. The phone slipped from my numb fingers, clattering onto the cold floor, the screen cracking with a sharp snap.
I don't know how long I stood there, frozen, until the click of the electronic lock on the front door broke the spell.
Aries Monroe walked in. His tall frame filled the doorway, blocking the light. His head lifted, his nostrils flaring slightly. He could smell her, the scent of another she-wolf-Isla's scent, leaking from the phone. It was a testament to his Alpha senses, an ability that made him the powerful leader of the Monroe Pack.
His gaze fell to the shattered phone on the floor, then slowly traveled up to my pale face.
His ice-blue eyes held no guilt. Only the cold fury of a man whose plans had been disrupted.
"You answered my phone," he stated. It wasn't a question. The tone was as cold as a Siberian winter.
"She's pregnant." I heard my own voice tremble. "Is it yours?"
Aries didn't answer. He took a step forward, and the sheer force of his Alpha presence washed over me, a physical pressure that made it hard to breathe.
"This is none of your business." The command, a unique power Alphas wield over their own, shot through the fragile mind-link between us. It was an order meant to crush my will, to force my submission.
I fought against it, stubbornly meeting his gaze as tears welled in my eyes, refusing to fall. "I am your fated mate! Chosen by the Moon Goddess! How is this not my business?" The very foundation of our world, the belief in a destined partner, was being shattered.
A flicker of something-pain, regret?-crossed his face, so fast I thought I'd imagined it.
He looked at me, and with the chilling finality of a judge passing sentence, he spoke the words that could tear any werewolf's soul to pieces.
"I, Aries Monroe, reject you, Kira Hayes, as my mate."
The moment the words left his lips, an unspeakable agony exploded from the depths of my soul. It felt as if an invisible hand had reached into my chest and squeezed my heart until it burst.
My inner wolf, a creature I barely ever felt because I was born a wolfless-a genetic defect that left me without the ability to shift-let out a piercing, silent howl that echoed in the ruins of my mind. The Rejection, as it was known, was the Moon Goddess's curse, a severing of the sacred bond between mates. The rejected party, I vaguely recalled from Pack lore, would suffer the tortures of hell.
I stumbled backward, my body hitting the cold wall. The pain was so intense I started to convulse, my vision blurring at the edges.
Aries just watched. He looked at me as if I were a stranger, a piece of furniture in his way.
He turned, offering no explanation, and strode toward the door.
"You'll regret this, Aries!" I choked out, using the last of my strength.
His stride faltered for a fraction of a second, but he didn't look back. The heavy thud of the door closing was the death sentence of my love.
I slid down the wall, the pain in my soul making it impossible to think.
And then, a different kind of sickness, a violent churning in my stomach, surged up, completely separate from the spiritual torment.
I scrambled to the bathroom, collapsing in front of the toilet as my body heaved.
