On my twenty-first birthday, I was just a broke orphan sitting in a dark apartment, staring at an overdue rent notice. A freak lightning strike suddenly shattered my reality, tearing me from Earth and dropping me into a primal alien jungle, where I was cornered by a massive white tiger. I thought I was dead, but I woke up in a high-tech hospital surrounded by people with animal ears, scales, and tails. The doctor looked at me with pity and delivered the crushing truth. "Earth is a lost world, Anya. To us, you are a purebred human relic." In this Varden Empire ruled by genetically superior Beastkin, I was painfully fragile, physically weak, and treated like a delicate museum exhibit. Worse, I learned that the monstrous tiger from the jungle was actually Marshal Jaxon Kensington, the ruthless and overwhelmingly powerful commander of the Imperial Army. I felt completely helpless and suffocated. I was trapped in an alien world where I was inferior to everyone, terrified of the military monster who had brought me here. Why was I dragged into this brutal universe just to be a weak specimen? What I didn't know was that the Empire's registry had just paired my DNA with the Marshal's, flashing an impossible 99% compatibility match. By Imperial Law, the cold, untouchable commander was now permanently bound to me, and his terrifying, primal obsession had just been awakened.
"No-ah, no, please, I can't-I can't take it anymore-"
Ansel gasped, his voice breaking into a whimper.
The dream was all heat and weight.
A towering Beastkin man with snow-white fur, rounded tiger ears, and molten gold eyes pressed him down into somewhere soft and dark, his massive frame caging Ansel completely.
A thick, striped tail coiled possessively around Ansel's waist, while hot breath fanned over his throat.
"Easy, little one. You're shaking," the tiger rumbled, fangs grazing just under Ansel's ear, not biting, just teasing.
His low purr vibrated straight through Ansel's chest. "So sensitive. You smell so sweet like this."
Careful claws, retracted to soft pads, traced slowly down Ansel's side.
Ansel shuddered hard, fingers sinking helplessly into thick white fur. He meant to push away, but his body arched up instead, pleading.
"L-look at me," the tiger coaxed, big clawed hand tilting Ansel's chin up, forcing their eyes to meet. "Good boy. You feel it, don't you? This claim. You're mine."
He rocked against him, slow and heavy and overwhelming, until there was no space left between them.
Ansel sobbed, overwhelmed by size, heat, and that deep possessive growl. "Too much, too much- please-"
"I know," the tiger soothed, licking a hot stripe over his pulse, tail tightening. "Just one more, for me. Let go for me."
It felt less like a dream and more like a binding. A deep, intimate anchoring that left him gasping, trembling, and burning.
He woke with a jolt, heart hammering, skin damp with sweat.
The room was dark and silent. No tiger. No golden eyes. Just the familiar ache of loneliness and a strange, lingering warmth low in his belly.
He pressed the heels of his hands hard against his eyes, his face burning.
He was straight. Completely, boringly straight.
He had never liked animals that way, never been into any weird play, never even thought about that kind of stuff.
So why - why a male tiger?
Why that huge growling Beastkin pinning him down and making him make those sounds?
Was it stress? Loneliness?
Twenty-one years of never being held by anyone, so his brain just invented something to fill the gap?
He sat there feeling disturbed, embarrassed, and oddly guilty, his heart still racing for all the wrong reasons. After a minute he shook his head hard and forced himself to drop it.
Nope. Not thinking about this now. Birthday first. Cake first. Pretend that dream never happened.
He sat up, breathing hard, and groped for his phone. The screen lit up: 12:00 midnight. It was officially his twenty-first birthday.
It was his birthday. At twelve midnight, a mundane notification popped into view. The white text glimmered amid the darkness.
"Happy Birthday!"This was the only birthday greeting he got.
He pulled a single, slightly squashed cupcake from a greasy paper bag. It was a cheap treat from the corner store, the frosting a synthetic, cheerful pink.
With careful fingers, he stuck a lone birthday candle into the center. The match scraped, and a small flame flickered to life, casting dancing shadows across the cramped apartment. The room was a testament to a life on hold. A lumpy mattress lay on the floor. A secondhand desk was buried under piles of heavy books on architecture-a dream he couldn't afford to pursue.
His reflection stared back at him from the dark window pane: a thin, pale young man with tired eyes.
His phone buzzed, the vibration sharp against the wooden floor. He picked it up. It was a text from Martha Foster, the elderly woman who had been a caregiver at the orphanage where he grew up.
"Happy 21st, sweetie. Don't forget to eat something nice."
A small, genuine smile touched Ansel's lips, a rare warmth in the cold room. He typed back a quick reply.
"I will, Martha. Thanks for remembering."
He set the phone down. The brief warmth from the message faded, leaving the familiar ache of loneliness in its place. He turned back to the cupcake, the tiny flame dancing on his eyelids as he closed them.
He was supposed to make a wish.
Right. He remembered that part. The kids at the orphanage had always taken wishes seriously-eyes squeezed shut, hands pressed together, faces solemn enough to negotiate with God. Ansel, however, never remembered a single wish he'd made. He was usually still trying to think of one when someone nudged him toward the candles.
Now there was no one to nudge him. Just him, a slightly squashed cupcake, and a silence so complete it felt like an audience.
He thought about it. Then he pressed his palms together, closed his eyes, and let one corner of his mouth curl up-half self-mockery, half a rare flicker of boyish mischief. Very seriously, he began:
"I wish... in this new year, I could get rich without working."
"Be a lazy bum and still come out on top."
"Have meals delivered to my mouth and clothes handed onto my back."
"Reap without sowing. Profit without labor."
His lips twitched, as if he were laughing at himself.
"Wealth, glory, and a one-step ascension to the heavens!"
Then he leaned in.
He blew. The flame vanished, plunging the room into near-total darkness.
At that exact moment, a deafening crack of thunder shook the building. The windows rattled violently in their frames, a sound so loud it felt like the sky was tearing apart directly over his head.
Ansel flinched hard, his heart slamming against his ribs from the sudden, concussive noise.
Before he could even take a breath, an impossibly bright, blue-white light flooded the room, pouring through the window. It wasn't like any lightning he had ever seen. It seemed focused, aimed, as if it had an intelligence of its own. It was aimed directly at him.
He threw an arm over his eyes, a purely instinctual gesture of self-preservation.
A searing, unimaginable pain engulfed him. It was not a burn or a shock, but something deeper, as if every atom in his body was being torn apart and set on fire simultaneously.
He tried to scream, but his lungs felt like they had turned to ash. There was no air, only fire.
For one absurd second, his fevered brain flashed back to the tiger's heat in the dream-no, not like this, this was real, this was killing him.
The smell of ozone and burnt sugar from the forgotten cupcake filled his nostrils, a bizarre final sensation.
He felt a strange, horrifying detachment, as if his consciousness were a balloon cut from its string, floating up towards the ceiling, looking down at the writhing body below.
A single, final thought echoed in the void, tinged with dark, weary humor. Jesus, what kind of shitty luck is this? On my twenty-first birthday? First that bizarre, embarrassing tiger dream that left me shaking, and now I'm getting fried by lightning in my own apartment?
Well... that's one way to not have to go to work tomorrow. And... one way to finally not be tortured by this damn life.
The thought dissolved.
On the floor of the cheap apartment, a thin wisp of smoke rose from a dark scorch mark where Ansel Hayes had been moments before. The cupcake lay on its side, its pink frosting melted into a sad, sugary puddle.
Outside, the storm raged on, as if nothing had happened at all.
