While I Was Bleeding Out, He Lit Lanterns For Her

While I Was Bleeding Out, He Lit Lanterns For Her

Katie Oettgen
As I lay on the floor of our manor, bleeding out from a ruptured ectopic pregnancy, I used my last ounce of strength to call my husband, Cole. I begged him for help, my vision blurring. But the only thing I heard was the clinking of champagne glasses and his mistress's giggle in the background. "Stop the drama, June," Cole snapped, his voice cold. "We're about to go on stage. Don't call again." He hung up, leaving me to die alone on the Persian rug while he accepted an award with another woman on his arm. I woke up in the hospital days later. My baby was gone. They had removed my fallopian tube. Cole finally arrived, smelling of expensive scotch and his mistress's perfume. He didn't hug me. He didn't cry. Instead, he leaned over my hospital bed, pressing his knee into the mattress until my fresh stitches tore open and bled. "You embarrassed me by calling an ambulance," he hissed. "My mistress, Alycia, says you're faking it. Clean yourself up." He left me bleeding again to go announce a $10 million donation to Alycia's "groundbreaking" medical research. I stared at the TV screen, numb. The research Alycia was taking credit for? It was mine. I wrote that patent years ago under a pseudonym. They thought I was just a poor, orphan housewife who needed Cole's money to survive. They had no idea I was actually a billionaire scientist hiding my identity. I pulled the IV needle out of my arm. A drop of blood fell onto the divorce papers I had been hiding. I didn't wipe it off. I signed my name right over it. Then I walked into the bank, reactivated my dormant account with $128 million, and bought the penthouse directly overlooking Cole's house. The mourning widow is dead. The avenger is born.

AAARRCHU!!! Someone sneezed so loudly. It jerked Doctor Simeon who was about injecting a patient with a syringe.

"Argh!" He muttered with a growl.

Simeon arched his brows before turning around. His eyes caught with two Nurses. Lilian and Rita.

He knew who sneezed. It was obvious since it happened occasionally. "I'm sorry sir" Rita muttered trying to cover her mouth.

Another one was coming. She couldn't hold it. The upcoming sneeze was too much for her to bear. Her eyes even became teary.

Simeon looked around and sighted the vase which had flowers in them. "Lilian?" He called in a frustrated voice.

"Yes Sir? She looked at him and quickly took her head low.

"Who bought in the flowers?"

"A patient" Lilian replied.

"Who? I know it's a patient but who?" He looked really angry. His gaze could tell it.

Arrchuuu!!! Rita's sneeze came again.

"I'm sorry!" She yelped.

"Uurgh! Lilian, Take the flowers out"

"Sir?"

"You heard me. I can't have her disturbing my peace!"

"The patient might get angry. She's the one asleep" Lilian pointed at a young girl who slept silently on the bed.

"Who cares-

"Sir?...I'm just gonna leave" Rita voice came, which interrupted Dr Simeon.

Simeon looked at her. "What did you say?"

"I'm gonna leave. I don't wanna be the reason for the flowers disappearance" Rita spoke slowly with her eyes looking down.

He rubbed his face and gave out a loud sigh.

"Sometimes, If you can't face your allergies! Quit the job! Stop wasting my time and money!!!" He barked. Rita shivered.

She felt he was was right. This annoying allergy!.

"Leave" He heard him say.

"I'm gonna call you in tomorrow, In a more comfortable room" His voice became calm.

"Thank you sir" Rita muttered. She bowed before leaving.

"Let's continue, Lilian" He quickly looked at her and looked away.

"What a long day" Rita shook her head as she slowly changed into her normal clothing. A jersey and jean trousers.

She opened her wardrobe and kept her Nursing uniform before walking out.

As she walked in the corridor, She took her steps slowly. Rita suddenly stopped and unlocked the door before her. The room was very dark and huge.

It looked like a forgotten room. The curtain hung above the window looked scary and haggard.

It was torn and dark. It almost looked like a hallowen custome. Rita breathed heavily as she continued walking. As soon as she reached the huge bed side, She stopped.

Rita looked at the bed. On it, was a woman whose eyes were closed. She looked like someone who was in her late 40s. "Mum" Rita whispered to her.

Her Mother was rather quiet. She didn't say a thing. "Mum?" Rita whispered again as she tried to touch her face with her hand.

Suddenly, and with a mighty rush, The woman opened her eyes and grabbed her arm. "Oww" Rita whimpered.

"Who are you?!" The woman growled.

"Mum! Please, Let go of my arm" Rita cried.

"Mum???? How dare you call me that!! I'm the Only First Queen in whole of Petal Land!!" She growled again gritting her teeth in fury. Her eyes brought out flames as she spoke. She really looked scary.

"Mum, Its hurts, please! I just came to check on you, That's all" Rita tears continued falling.

"Stop calling me Mum!!!, How can a 20 year old Queen like I, Give birth to a 50 Year old Monstrous being like you!"

"Please, Let me go!" Rita tried pulling her hand away but her Mother was stronger. The more Rita tried, The more she got hurt.

"It's me! It's me Rita" She continued crying.

The woman titled her head looking at Rita strangely. "Remember me? It's me, Your Daughter?" Rita touched her chest, nodding her head vigorously.

"Arghhhh!!" Rita's Mother, Mrs Anderson roared loudly and scarily.

She quickly seized her by the neck and began to choke and strangle her.

"No...Don't" Rita pleaded as she tried pulling her Mother's strong heavy hand from her neck.

Rita was trying hard to breathe. "Mum, Please" Rita muttered. Her voice could hardly be heard.

Her tears dropped, and one fell down from her eye to her Mother's hand which was still tightly clenching her neck.

"Ah" Mrs Anderson suddenly screamed pulling her hand away.

"Mu...m" Rita coughed realizing she had come back to her normal senses. Mrs Anderson jumped on the bed and tightly held herself.

"Go!" She yelled in tears as she saw Rita came close to her.

"Mum?"

"Go...Please" Mrs Anderson cried.

"I don't wanna hurt you" She took her face away.

"I'm fine Mum. It's not your fault" Rita coughed again. She gently tapped her chest, clearing her throat as she continued taking steps towards her Mother.

"Don't come close, Rita!!" Her Mother yelled loudly which made Rita tremble in fear.

"I'm Serious!!. If you do, I'm gonna chase you out with Flowers. You're still allergic to them, Right?"

Rita looked at her. Sadness were written on the both faces. "Mum, Please-

"You wouldn't want to feel irritated right? So, Leave me alone. Let me stay in this crooked hell psycho room. Leave this psychoath alone!"

"Stop!" Rita yelled back.

"You're my Mum! Not a Psychopath!" She felt tears leave her eyes.

"Just Leave. I don't wanna argue much with you. Leave now, before I change again. Leave before I bring out the flowers" Mrs Anderson warned as she slowly rested her head back on the bed.

Rita looked down sadly and took one last look at her Mum before stepping out.
