Chapter 1 The Future Alpha

"Boarding student?" Mona looked at her parents with a skeptical expression.

On the eve of leaving for school as usual, her parents shared a smile and watched her go out the door, but today suddenly dropped a sentence that was no less than a bomb - "We will have a boarding student coming to our house next week."

"He's a student temporarily transferred from another pack, he's two years older than you, you're close in age, surely you can be friends." There was a hint of tentativeness in her mother's tone, but as if to prevent her from being paranoid and asking questions.

Her mother put her hands on her shoulders and pushed her out the door at a brisk pace, "You will be late if you don't get going, didn't you say that Mr. Nate would be chanting for an hour at a late student, making your ears buzz like flies flying in?"

Stomping into her half-worn shoes and picking up her backpack full of books, she tornadoes toward the high school located a few blocks away. During the short ten-minute journey, the small question still hovered in her heart and gradually amplified - what the hell is going on?

None of the pack's schools had student dormitories, because the students were all descended from Riverrun Pack members, each with their own families and houses. She had never heard of any exchange students from other packs. Not to mention that her parents were both highly reputable warriors in the Riverrun Pack, primarily responsible for the werewolves' martial arts training and tactical instruction. They weren't some kind of domestic nanny omega in charge of babysitting.

Why would they take in a boarding student?

As Mona ran and pondered, she still couldn't make sense of it all. When she arrived at the classroom on time, she decided to put aside all the distracting thoughts. Stuffing the schoolbag into the drawer casually, her expression immediately switched to serious and quiet mode, pretending that she had already arrived a while in advance, so as not to be discovered by Mr. Nate, who was right behind her.

"I almost thought you were going to be late!" Between classes, her best friend, Clare, put her head in front of her desk and said, slightly teasingly, "Mona, how do you manage to get to school at the last minute every time!"

"Guess what?" She ruffled Clare's lovely caramel-colored curls affectionately, "Probably because my feet run with the precision of a clock."

Clare pulled the ends of her hair out of her hands and said brokenly, "Stop pulling on my natural curls, my hair is a mess every day when I wake up. I am so jealous of your long, naturally smooth black hair, it's like thick seaweed."

"But how cute you are when you shift into wolf! And I ......" The lights of her emerald gem-like eyes suddenly dimmed.

Would she really have a wolf?

Pack members usually shift at the age of thirteen or fourteen, but she still hadn't shown any signs of appearing as a wolf until she was sixteen, and she was the only one of all her peers who hadn't shifted yet.

"I'm sorry Mona, I didn't mean to." Clare read the downturn in her mood, "You're just a late bloomer! Your mom and dad were great warriors of the pack, and the Moon Goddess will definitely give you the best wolf in the world!"

Mona pulled a forced smile. Although her parents and friends had said a lot of similar comforting words to her, and even cited examples of how the pack had many members in the past who had shifted into wolves when they were nearly adults, telling her she was only 16, so there was no need to be anxious.

But she had privately looked up the pack's records and realized that only three people in history had shifted into their wolf form after the age of seventeen.

Mr. Nate's long geography lesson that lasted all morning went largely unheeded by Mona. Her mind had long since been roaming the skies, worrying for a moment about whether she would be the first freak in the history of the pack to have parents who were warriors but no wolf herself.

She indulged in imaginings of what would happen to her when she had a wolf. She would be sure to give those pranksters who had stuffed frogs into her locker and stretched out their legs and tripped her a hard teach them a lesson and show them what a bad wolf she was!

As the bell rang, Otto came running from the other end of the classroom and said in a quirky way, "Ladies, it's time for your precious lunch, so please move with me to the central cafeteria". He was an accelerated student who had just turned 14 years old, popular, and loved by most of the class because of his tiny figure and baby face, especially Mona and Clare, who also regarded Otto as their own brother.

The two girls were amused by Otto, and the trio walked harmoniously and briskly towards the central cafeteria. Not far away, a handsome young man in a slim black suit with licentious medium-length curly hair and smiling eyes spotted her with sharp eyes.

"Ms. Moore, please wait!"

They turned their heads in unison to see Beta David of the pack, leaning on an understated yet luxurious black limousine.

Clare took her by the hand to keep her from moving forward and looked at her with puzzled eyes, "It's Beta David! why is he looking for you?"

"I don't know, I haven't had any personal contact with him before!" Mona explained to Clare in a whisper. She knew Clare had a bit of a crush on Beta and she didn't want her to get the wrong idea.

David stepped forward and made his intentions known to her, "Ms. Moore, Alpha asked me to pick you up and take you to the Packhouse."

"Why does he want to see me? I have class after lunch break ......"

"I only have the order from Alpha to take you there", he looked to Clare and Otto, "Your parents are there too, maybe your friends can take a leave of absence instead of you."

"Did something terrible happen to my parents?" Mona tensed up instantly, worried if her parents had been injured by a rouge attack or something. And that was why Alpha was looking for her.

Beta read her concern, "Your parents are safe and sound, it's Alpha who has something important for you, you better come with me now."

Mona looked over to her two best friends, who shot her worried glances. After a brief goodbye, she hurriedly followed Beta's footsteps and left.

The car pulled off campus and Mona tried to keep prying, Beta's expression was inscrutable, he simply said, "It’s something to do with intertribal matters, we'll be at the packhouse soon, you'll find out when you get there."

Slowly pushing open the thick, ornate, pure white door of the packhouse, Mona's heartbeat gradually accelerated as she wondered just what awaited her behind it.

In the dining hall with white as the base and gold accents, her parents were settling into the guest seats of the long dining table, talking and laughing.

Mona's worries disappeared instantly when she saw her parents sitting unharmed. She breathed a sigh of relief and smiled as she walked towards Alpha to salute him solemnly. At that moment, she noticed a handsome young man sitting next to Alpha looking at her.

He had a fresh and capable short black hair, both sides of his temples were shaved short, his sculpted and three-dimensional face was set with brilliant golden eyes, which made people can't help but be immersed in his gaze, and the charming smile hanging at the corner of his mouth gradually overlapped with the look of her neighbor in her memories, but this tall and sturdy body under the casual shirt strongly signaled to her the fact that he was a mature man, which made her can't help but feel a hint of embarrassment and strangeness.

He is Felix Bonner. She recognized this 20-year-old man immediately, even though she hadn't seen him in almost a decade.

"Felix wasn't supposed to be back until next week, I didn't realize he was arriving this morning." Alpha smiled, "That's why I asked your family to come over to the Packhouse so suddenly to get together."

Felix is the only son of Riverrun Pack Alpha. Ten years ago, when conflict between the packs on the Werewolf Continent was rife, Alpha, his Beta and Gamma were busy maintaining stability. As the best warrior within the pack, under alpha's orders, Mona's father oversaw leading patrols along the border, while her mother was in charge of protecting and training Felix, Alpha's only son.

Mona and Felix's bond and intersection began here. At that time, Felix lived next to her house for six months, and needed to receive strict training from her mother every day.

Facing her as a naughty little kid, Felix didn't show any impatience at all, and often accompanied her to play family and marriage role-playing games during breaks, as well as cooking for her and putting her to bed, being a competent and good brother.

Pack Luna was the daughter to the Alpha of Blue Ice Pack, a well-known pack in the Werewolf Continent. The Blue Ice Pack located in a natural choke point. Alpha and Luna see the turbulent situation could not be calmed down in a short time, they decide to send Felix to Blue Ice Pack for a safer life and a better education. The pack Alpha had more energy and time to teach his grandson how to be a strong Alpha.

Mona remembered that the hasty goodbye made her sad for a while, and she clamored for Felix to come back and play with her. She was surprised and delighted to be reunited with him in a way she hadn't expected.

At that moment, Felix ushered himself toward her with a polished manner, stretching his arms out and giving her what seemed like an overly enthusiastic hug, "It's been a long time, Mona."

Surrounded by his broad chest, Mona's head rested passively on his neck, a hint of cologne mixed with his own warm, masculine scent filling the air. Although she couldn't sniff out the pheromone and wouldn't be affected by it, the closeness she'd never felt with the opposite sex turned into a rush of heat that washed over her.

She had to gently brace her hands a safe distance away from him, blushing and raising her eyes to greet him, "Hello Felix."

Felix stroked her hair and sighed, "The little girl finally became a lady."

"Look at these two children!" The elders revealed a pleased smile at this point.

"Puppy, you must remember Felix, you used to play together as kids!" Seeing her confused face, her father introduced, "Now that the situation on the Continent has relatively stabilized, our alpha believes it is time to recall Felix from Blue Ice Pack to take over the position of leader. By the time of the inauguration ceremony on the night of the full moon next month, he will be our next alpha."

"We are just so happy for you," her mother said with hopes for Felix's future, "I hope you will use your learned tactics and great strength to lead our pack into growth and development."

With so much information to digest, it was a lunch that she had absolutely no recollection of what the dishes tasted like in her mouth. She was in a dream, and by the time she had gotten out of school, gone home, and gone to bed, it was as if she hadn't reacted to it all.

The next morning, Felix suddenly called her, where he greeted her still gently and chatted with her in a familiar tone as if he'd never left, and she stumbled through a few of his questions.

"It's almost time, I won't get in the way of your lessons", Felix said at the end of the call in a tone that brooked no refusal, "puppy, beta will pick you up to the packhouse to dine with me every day at noon. See you later, okay?"

Without waiting for her to think it over, the call had hung up, and as she listened to the regular beeping coming from her ear, a complex mix of a little surprise, a little anticipation, and a little squirming stirred in her heart.
