Chapter 1 One

It was a rainy Monday morning in New York Metropolitan City and Lisa was beyond late for work. Coupled with the fact that she woke up late by indulging in her midnight fictional fantasies, she had forgotten to listen to the weather forecast informing everyone about the impending heavy rainfall. Unfortunately for Lisa, she had neither worn an article of warm clothing nor carried an umbrella and still had to take public transport to work. Today just wasn't a good day for Lisa.

Dressed in her usual Monday outfit of a white-collar shirt, black pencil skirt, and a low flat shoe, she had her dark-brown hair in a neat bun. All these efforts seemed to go down the drain as it rained dogs and cats. As the train stopped at the station, Lisa hurriedly braced herself as she exited from the train.

She was instantly drenched by the rain.

Picking up her pace, she ran towards the New York Times magazine building which was one of the largest buildings in Manhattan. Hurriedly crossing the busy road, Lisa ran down the pavement dodging fellow pedestrians trying to get to work just like her. Finally passing through the gliding doors inside the building, feeling relieved but soaked, she took the stairs to her editing department, which was on the fifth floor. Sure, taking the elevator could've been a better option but, in this case, well... it was a sacrifice she had to make, but man, she was stressed.

"Lisa, what happened to you? You look like a drenched cat." Ella, Lisa's boss and chief editor in their team asked.

Ella was a chronic gossiper, always getting in everyone's business and never minding hers. Talk about a "Karen".No one liked her, but the thing is Ella was good at her work. They had both applied for the chief editor position, but Ella got it because, well... she was the better choice.

"Yhh..., totally forgot to listen to the weather forecast this morning" Lisa replied trying to make herself presentable as best as she could but all to no avail.

"Oooh too bad, what a shame. I've got a spare outfit, wanna try it out? Ella asked.

Ella could be nice when she wanted to be but she could be quite petty most times.

"Sure thing," Lisa replied. It's not like she could make a new outfit straight from the air. After a couple of minutes of waiting and ready to search for Ella, then she heard her voice

"Sorry I took a while, met with this really cute guy on my way here," Ella said chirpily.

"Reallyyyy..." Rolling her eyes as she took the bag from Ella,

"Duhh he was really cute, blonde hair, blue eyes and I could've sworn I counted eight packs on him..." Shecontinued, rambling, Lisa looked inside the bag and pulled out a short black gown, "Whatttt? You've got to be kidding me! How did you forget to mention that the spare you had was a slutty dress?!" She pinched the bridge of her nose, looking up and wondering exactly what spell was cast on her today.

"My bad, must've slipped my mind" Ella ran out giggling,

"Damn that stupid girl" Lisa mumbled. I knew she would get me back for the lunch I didn't get her on Friday. Slipping out of her wet outfit, she quickly put on the black dress and pulled out a pair of heels and a small white soft towel, Lisa smiled Ella was quite thoughtful after all. Taking her hair out of the bun, she dried it with the towel and then worked it into a high ponytail while wishing for the rest of the day to go in her favor.

If only she knew.

Her work desk was quite filled with piles of unfinished work, if only she could get a nice cup of coffee to officially start the day; she thought to herself with a sigh,

"Here you go" Ella placed a hot cup of coffee on her desk.

"You're such an angel" Lisa praised as she took a sipand moaned. Man, her boss must've woken up on the right side of the bed today.

"As your lifesaver, you got to help me out," Ella said

Damn it! Must there be a price to pay for every act of kindness with this woman?

"Sure. What's up?" I mean it can't be that hard right? But Lisa wouldn't have thought that her little act of kindness would land her on a cruise boat with the photography team.

"Damn you again Ella" Lisa yelled as her voice was swallowed by the sound of the pouring rain, "You have to hold on tight pretty miss" Mike, one of the photographers from the photography team said. Mike was like this uncle next door and given that it wasn't the first time together on the field, they were kind of like buddies.

Like hell would I fall Lisa thought, " I was on the swimming team in high school, I won't fall off...might've been a long time since I was near water this large but surely this ocean got nothing on me, right?!" She rambled nervously; she wasn't optimistic about this.

Mike's belly laugh rolled out and could be heard amidst the storm and noise,

"You're quite funny miss," he said in between his laughter. Lisa blushed feeling slightly embarrassed about this sort of situation.

On a regular day, she would have been depressed about the fact that not only was she with a bunch of over-eager group of photographers ready to take pictures of a stormy sea and a large blue whale sighted two days ago, but she was once again, drenched in rain. Her hair was pretty much ruined at this point and even her borrowed outfit was wet to the core, it might be slutty but it was still borrowed. Despite all of these, Lisa had this uncanny feeling, like something big was going to happen, but what was? She pondered as her eyes were glued to the waves that made the sea unsettling.

All of a sudden on impact, her crew's mini cruise boat was rocked by a big wave, she hurriedly grabbed onto the rail for her dear life

"Ohh no no no, this can't be happening!" she screamed.

"Miss, I think it's high time you got in!" Mike yelled over the storm.

"That sounds like a great idea!" Lisa yelled if only she dared to let go of the rail.

"Come on!" Mike yelled frantically, watching the wave close in on them.

As she let go of the rail, the wave instantly hit the boatmaking Lisa lose her footing as she slipped with those damn heels she wore. She fell into the sea.
