Little did she know, this was only the beginning of her ordeal. Find out in the book.
I paced back and forth in the spacious living room, the soft carpet muffling my steps, my heart racing with a tumult of anger and anxiety.
The antique clock on the wall proclaimed it well past midnight, its steady ticking the only sound in the room. When the front door creaked open, the sound echoed like a gunshot in the silence, making me freeze mid-step.
Turning sharply, I confronted Alexander as he entered, his demeanor that of a composed billionaire, yet there was an uncharacteristic tension in his movements, a stiffness around his eyes.
"Where have you been?" My voice was sharp, cutting through the heavy air.
Alexander paused, his jaw tightening visibly. "Out," he replied curtly, shrugging off his coat and hanging it with controlled precision.
"Out?" I repeated, incredulous. "At this hour? With whom? Victoria, perhaps?"
A flash of irritation crossed Alexander's features. "This again? Eliza, how many times-"
"How many times?" I interrupted, my voice rising. "I've seen the messages, Alexander. I know she's still a part of your life."
"Victoria is involved in a business project," Alexander retorted, his tone strained. "It's strictly professional."
I scoffed bitterly. "Professional? Convenient, isn't it?" I stepped closer, my hands trembling as I thrust a crumpled piece of paper toward him. "Explain this, then."
Alexander's eyes flickered to the paper, his expression tightening imperceptibly. "Where did you find that?"
"Does it matter?" I choked on my words, tears threatening to spill over. "I found it in your study. A contract, Alexander. A contract that makes a mockery of our marriage. It's all a charade. How could you?"
Alexander ran a hand through his hair, his composure faltering. "Eliza, it's not what you think-"
"Not what I think?" My voice dropped to a whisper, filled with betrayal and hurt. "You used me. All this time, it was revenge for something I had no part in."
Alexander stepped forward, reaching out to me, but I recoiled instinctively. "Eliza, please. Let me explain."
"Explain?" I laughed bitterly, tears streaming down my cheeks. "How can you possibly explain this?"
"It started as revenge, yes," Alexander admitted, his voice cracking with remorse. "But somewhere along the way, it became more. I swear it did."
I shook my head in disbelief, my whole body trembling with emotion. "I don't know what's real anymore, Alexander. You've lied to me from the beginning."
"I was wrong," Alexander admitted, his shoulders sagging under the weight of his guilt. "I see that now. I never meant to hurt you."
"But you did," I whispered brokenly, feeling the depth of his betrayal like a physical ache. "More than anyone ever has."
Alexander's expression twisted in anguish. "I know. And I'm sorry. More sorry than you'll ever know."
I looked at him, tears blurring my vision. "Sorry isn't enough this time, Alexander. It's just not."
The shrill ring of a phone shattered the heavy silence, Alexander's gaze flicking to the screen. Victoria's name flashed boldly across the caller ID.
My anger flared anew. "Of course," I spat out, my voice filled with bitterness.
Ignoring the call, Alexander met my eyes with a mixture of desperation and determination. "Eliza, this has nothing to do with her. This is between us."
"Is it?" I questioned hollowly, feeling the weight of doubt and betrayal pressing down on me. "Because it feels like she's been a part of this all along."
Alexander drew a deep breath, attempting to steady himself. "Eliza, I need you to trust me. We can work through this. Together."
I shook my head, tears still flowing unchecked. "I don't know if we can, Alexander. I just don't know."
The room fell into a tense silence, the enormity of our emotions stifling any further words. Alexander reached out tentatively, but this time, I didn't pull away.
"Please," he pleaded softly, his voice filled with desperate hope. "Give me a chance to make things right."
I met his gaze, seeing the sincerity there amidst the pain and confusion. Taking a shaky breath, I made a decision that felt impossible yet necessary. "I'll give you one last chance, Alexander. But it's the last one."
Relief washed over Alexander's face, mixed with gratitude and determination. "Thank you. I won't let you down."
But as we stood there, clinging to fragile hope, neither of us foresaw the challenges that lay ahead. The secrets, the betrayals, and the deep-seated vendettas that would test our bond like never before.
As the first faint rays of dawn filtered through the windows, casting a muted glow over the room, I knew with a sinking certainty that our journey had only just begun.
A sudden crash from upstairs shattered the fragile peace, sending us both spinning toward the staircase. I held my breath, my heart hammering in my chest. "What was that?"
Alexander's face paled, his eyes wide with alarm. "Stay here," he instructed tersely. "I'll go check."
I watched him hurry up the stairs, fear and confusion knotting my stomach. Wiping away tears, I tried to steady my breathing. The house seemed unnaturally quiet, every sound amplified in the stillness.
Moments later, Alexander returned, his expression grim. "We have a problem," he announced gravely. "Someone's been inside our home."
My heart skipped a beat. "Who? What do you mean?"
Alexander shook his head, his jaw set in a tight line. "I'm not sure. But they left this." He held up a small, sleek device, its presence ominous in the dim light. "A listening device."
My eyes widened in horror. "Someone's been spying on us?"
Alexander's nod was solemn. "It appears so."
The revelation hit me like a physical blow, adding a new layer of complexity and danger to our already tumultuous situation. Nausea churned in my gut, my legs threatening to give way beneath me.
"What do we do?" I whispered, barely able to voice my fear.
Alexander stepped closer, his demeanor resolute. "We find out who's behind this. And we make sure they pay."
I met his gaze, seeing a fierce determination burning in his eyes. Despite everything, despite the lies and the pain, a spark of hope flickered in my chest. Maybe, just maybe, we could navigate through this storm together.
But deep down, I knew one thing for certain: our lives had just taken a dangerous turn, and the hardest challenges were yet to come.
