Can they fight through these dark secrets and find love?
"It's crazy how one phone call can change your life." I whispered to no one in particular as I stared at the brown pages of my current read.
"Keeva, Keeva." I've been calling you for the past 10 minutes. Close that book and come down for dinner," my mom said barging into my room. I was startled and didn't realize she had been calling or that she was standing at my doorway.
I was too engrossed to notice. I quickly cleaned up and rushed downstairs before she got really annoyed. My mouth began to water as I got close to the dining room. I always look forward to Tuesday dinner when my mom gets to cook her delicious beef stroganoff with rice.
I got to the dining table and realize that everyone had been waiting for me. "Finally she's here," my little sister, Gabby exclaimed. "I apologize for my tardiness. I was deep into the novel I was reading."
I joined my mom in dishing out the food and we all broke out into different conversations. Gabby began to share her story of how she pranked her classmate by putting a fake spider in his bag. She spoke so animatedly that we couldn't help but laugh.
"Keeva, how was your day?" My dad asked. "Nothing as funny as a fake spider, just the usual customers coming in for their regular coffee dose and of course the occasional rude customers who can't seem to make up their mind and hold the long line of customers down.
Nothing strange." Gabby faked a yawn as mom flicked her hair. "Hey, why'd you do that?" We laughed at her as she pouted and mumbled something incoherently.
All of a sudden, dad received a phone call that made him tense, then he excused himself. We couldn't hear the conversation but I knew something was wrong. His face, now white like he had just seen a ghost.
When he returned to the table, mom broke the silence. "Is everything alright, love?" He played it off with a laugh. "Yeah, it was just a work issue. Nothing to worry about." Mom and I exchanged glances and decided to stay quiet.
The atmosphere had become quite tense. One would think that the silence could not get worse, but it did, as everyone leaned into their own thoughts. Even Gabby sensed the tension and refused to utter a word.
As I cleared the table, I looked into my dad's eyes and saw fear. He looked at me worriedly and went to his room.
Taking slow steps away from the kitchen, I walked to my room. I kept on wondering what could have made my dad so worried and afraid. I couldn't shake the feeling that something bad was about to happen.
I picked up my novel, but my I kept spacing out, so I decided to listen to my favorite playlist to get my mind off what had happened.
I kept on pondering what conversation my dad must have had. Little did I know that the phone call would cause a drastic change in my life.
