Chapter 1 The letter

The ivory paper was a portent of bad news, imprinted with the emblem of a legal company she faintly remembered. Dread had already taken up residence in the pit of her stomach, even before she had opened it.

With memories rushing through her, Valentina traced her finger over the chipped paint on the front door of her childhood house while standing on the cracked steps.

Her father's laughter. Her mother's soft humming. Both of them were gone, leaving her alone to fend off the tide of misfortune that had seemed unrelenting since the night of the accident.

The neighborhood had lost its warmth over the years, yet the house itself remained a sanctuary, a battered, weathered anchor that tethered her to something meaningful. Now, with the envelope in her hands, she felt that anchor loosening.

Her golden curls whipped over her face as a fierce gust of wind tore at them. The ancient sycamore tree's leaves twirled over her feet, almost taunting her.

Valentina glanced at the mailbox empty. No relief there. She had been clinging to hope for weeks that her overdue payments might go unnoticed a little longer, that perhaps the bank would be lenient. But this envelope, with its pristine edges and menacing formality, crushed those hopes like brittle leaves underfoot.

Slowly, she slid a finger under the flap, peeling it open with the kind of reverence one might reserve for an execution order.

"Notice of Foreclosure," the bold type proclaimed. Her home, the only physical link she had to her parents, made the words hazy as her eyes welled with tears, but their meaning was clear. was no longer hers.

Valentina sank to the stoop, the letter falling limply to her lap. The sound of children laughing down the street only heightened her sense of despair. She folded the paper in half, then quarters as if diminishing its size would lessen its impact. Her chest clenched, making it difficult for her to breathe for about a minute.

She immediately remembered her mother's voice consoling her during a childhood nightmare.

"Home isn't just a place, sweetheart. It's wherever you feel safe." But where could she feel safe now? The thought felt hollow, a cruel echo of a life she could no longer touch.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket, shattering the quiet moment. Pulling it out, she saw a message from her landlord a curt reminder that her lease for the flower shop was also teetering on the edge. The irony made her laugh bitterly. She was losing everything, all at once.

Valentina dragged herself to get up; she determined not to let sorrow dominate her. After putting the notice in her bag and using the back of her hand to wipe away her tears, she turned to face the home. Her mother's favorite fragrance, lavender, filled the air within.

The furniture, though worn, still bore the marks of a family's life scratches on the dining table from her father's woodworking projects and the threadbare arm of the couch where her mother always sat to read.

Her eyes landed on the mantelpiece. Photographs in frames depicted a more joyful moment: her parents on their wedding day, smiling at the camera with their arms intertwined; a younger Valentina with a bunch of wildflowers in her hands, missing her front teeth. Like a thick shroud, the weight of loss descended upon her.

But there was no time to wallow. She had to figure out a plan. Maybe the bank would reconsider. Maybe she could negotiate an extension. Or maybe, this was it. The end of everything familiar.

Outside, the sky had darkened, heavy with clouds that threatened rain. As Valentina locked the door behind her, she glanced at the old sycamore tree one last time. Its roots, deep and sprawling, mirrored the ones she had tried to grow here. Roots that were now being severed.

The faint hum of the engine was hypnotic, a steady rhythm that lulled Valentina into a sense of security as she dozed in the backseat. The streetlights outside flickered past like fleeting stars, illuminating her parents' faces in quick, fragmented flashes. Her father's profile, strong and steady, exuded confidence as his hands gripped the steering wheel. Her mother sat beside him, turning occasionally to glance at Valentina, her soft smile a beacon of warmth.

"Almost home," her mother had whispered, her voice a soothing melody. Valentina had smiled back, her eyelids growing heavier with each passing second.

Then came the sound. A loud, shrill screech that sliced through the silence like a jagged dagger. Valentina's heart thumped in her chest as her eyes sprung open. The automobile swerved suddenly to the left, tilting the globe. Normally soothing and quiet, her father's voice surged in alarm.

He yelled, "Hold on!" while struggling to control the wheel, his knuckles becoming white.

Everything happened too fast but in excruciating slow motion. The deafening blare of a horn. The flash of headlights seemed to grow impossibly large. Her mother's scream is raw, visceral, and cut short.

And then, darkness.

Valentina woke up and the environment was shockingly quiet. Her head pulsed, and her mouth opened to metallic tang of blood. She was upside down, her seatbelt holding her, glass fragments glittering like terrible jewels in the pale moonlight. The car was crumpled around her, a twisted cage that moaned and creased as though it were grieving its death.

"Mom? Dad?" Her voice was weak, trembling. The silence that followed was worse than any answer. Struggling against the restraint, she twisted her body, her small hands fumbling with the seatbelt clasp. Tears blurred her vision as she turned toward the front seats.

Her father was abnormally still, slumped over the steering wheel. Her mother's once-bright eyes gazed into the emptiness as her head leaned against the broken glass. Blood painted the interior, stark and unforgiving.

A sob tore from Valentina's throat as reality crashed down on her. They were gone. Her world's pillars, the people who had given her a sense of security, love, and completeness, were no longer there.

The quiet was interrupted by the distant wail of sirens getting louder. The night was lit up by red and blue lights, casting some pretty creepy shadows on the wreckage. Strong hands pulled her from the car, the voices of strangers wrapping around her like a net. "You're safe now," one of them had said, but the words rang hollow.

She wasn't safe. She would never be safe again.

Sitting on the bed's edge, she recalled her childhood. She held the locket her mother gave her on her twelfth birthday, shaking. There was a small photograph of her parents inside the room, still there and grinning at her. "Forever in my heart" was delicately engraved on the back, which she traced.

She had buried that night deep under layers of survival and diversion and hadn't given it any attention in years. But she had been brought back to the unadulterated, unfiltered sorrow of loss by the eviction notice.

This house had served as her haven for years, the only location where she could still sense their presence. On calm evenings, her mother's aroma filled the yard, while her father's laughter filled the living room. It was like losing them again after losing the house.

She wiped her eyes and whispered to herself, "Get it together." A stranger's image of a young lady with dark circles under her eyes, sunken cheeks, and tenacity she wasn't sure she possessed was reflected in the broken mirror. But she had to keep going. She had no other choice.

The locket clicked shut as she rose to her feet. She couldn't let herself drown in the past There were expenses to cover and a life to save. She learned to fight and to meet life's obstacles head-on from her parents. Right now, she would do that.

Valentina pulled the door open and entered the shop's pleasant warmth while the bell above it jingled softly. She was hugged by the pleasant aroma of lavender, roses, and newly cut grass, which momentarily softened the sharpness of her fear. At the entrance, she halted, her gaze skimming across the rows of brilliant flowers that had been neatly arranged. This place was her refuge, a fragile slice of normalcy amidst the chaos.

"Val?" Lucas's voice called from the back room, warm and tinged with surprise. A moment later, he emerged, wiping his hands on a green apron smudged with dirt. His dark hair was tousled, and a streak of soil marked his cheek, giving him the rugged charm that made half the town's women linger longer than necessary over their bouquets.

He remarked, "You're early," his smile wavering as he took in her face. "Are you okay?"

Valentina swallowed hard, willing the lump in her throat to dissolve. She had no intention of unloading her troubles on Lucas he had enough on his plate running this place. "I'm fine," she said, managing a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. "Just thought I'd get a head start."

Lucas arched a brow, unconvinced, but didn't press. "Well, we could use the help. It's been busier than usual today." He gestured toward the counter, where a pile of orders waited to be filled. "Mother's Day rush."
